2 Corinthians 5:14 ESV
14 For the love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded this: that one has died for all, therefore all have died;
In 2018, what “got” you? What got your attention? What got your devotion? You see, whatever controls us gets us.
TRUTH: Whatever controls us get us
In 2018, what “got” you? What got your attention? What got your devotion? You see, whatever controls us gets us.
A good way to know what controls you is asking, “What do I always think about?”
social media
social media
self image friendships
relationships
failures
guilt
shame
If we’re honest here at midweek, we know exactly what “got us” in 2018. We know exactly what won.
We know what it felt like to let our failures fuel guilt day after day after day.
We know what it felt like to let our unhealthy friendships fuel bad decisions that’s “not us.”
We know exactly what it’s like for shame we feed ourselves to never go away. Every night, hoping the shame and guilt will not be there.
Every night, hoping the shame and guilt will not be there.
Man! If we only knew what COULD control in the midst of everything that actually does. How our lives would be different!
Everyone wants the next year to be different from the previous.
We know exactly what we want different and what we want to change. For most of us, it’s that one thing that controlled us. Most of us here tonight know exactly what we needs to go and what needs to come. The thing is, we just do not want to give it up. Period. We know it controls us. We know it isn’t good for us, but it just has us as a prisoner. And we’re afraid. Because, there’s a fear of not knowing what our life will be like without it.

The love of Christ
What is the love of Christ?

John 3:16 ESV

What is the love of Christ?
2 Corinthians 5:
“One has died for all”
Jesus was the One that died for all.
We rebelled, God stayed faithful
We turned away, God pursued after
We
John 3:16 ESV
16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
For God SO loved the world that He gave His Son, Jesus.
God SO loved you that He met you in your mess.
God SO loves you that He still meets you in your mess students.
This love is so overwhelming we can never understand why God chose to rescue us.
Met us in our mess
The only thing we can do that makes any of sense is pursue the God that loves us so much. Right? That’s exactly what Paul said,
Transformed us
1 Corinthians 5:14
2 Corinthians 5:14 ESV
14 For the love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded this: that one has died for all, therefore all have died;
When the love of Christ invades your life students, as a result we become controlled by it.
“Controls” is translated “seizes.”
The only response to the love of Jesus is to be controlled by it! Out of want. You love the love of Jesus to the extent of being seized by it. Here’s the kicker, the main point, when you’re seized by love of Jesus, what’s actually happening is you are being seized by Jesus. And you will unashamedly say, “This is who I am.” Why?
2 Corinthians 5:14–15 ESV
14 For the love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded this: that one has died for all, therefore all have died; 15 and he died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised.
“because we have concluded this, that one has died for all, therefore all have died.”
Jesus died for all so that we could die to ourselves. Why would anyone be happy about dying to ourselves? Jesus will be the one making us alive.
TRUTH: Whatever controls you gets you
What is controlling you? Here’s the application:
When you are seized by the love of Christ, all the things you were enslaved to (body image, self-esteem, social media, lust, sexual impurity, etc.) will fall.
You will be unshackled from them and seized by the love of Christ.
When you are seize by the love of Jesus, you live for Jesus.
This is the reason why some of you aren’t living for Jesus. You simply haven’t been seized by Him. What’s to blame for that? The barriers you’ve put up or only the specific areas of your life you have given to Jesus.
Students, once you experience the love of Christ, it controls EVERYTHING. Jesus gets you. All of of you. And it’s a joy.

Application/Response

Students, there some things what were in your life in 2018 that need to go. Because unless they go, this will not be a different year.
