The Holy Spirit Is God

He is omniscient.

God the Spirit is all knowing meaning what He chooses to know He knows.
1 Corinthians 2:10–11 ESV
10 these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. 11 For who knows a person’s thoughts except the spirit of that person, which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.
The idea of “choosing what to know” is seen in Jesus’ words.
Matthew 24:36 ESV
36 “But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only.

He is omnipresent.

God the Spirit is everywhere at once.
Psalm 139:7 ESV
7 Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence?

He is omnipotent.

God the Spirit, like the Father & Son, is all powerful i.e. eternal in all.
Hebrews 9:14 ESV
14 how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God.

Summery

God the Spirit is just as much God as the Father and the Son.
With the Holy Spirit there is no “Godhead.”

God The Spirit Is Active

He was & is active in creation.

As we have talked about before, the Godhead each had a role in creation.
The Father was the architect.
The Son was the physical creator.
The Spirit was the beautifier.
Job 33:4 ESV
4 The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life.
Genesis 1:2 ESV
2 The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.
Job 33:4 ESV
4 The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life.

He was active in bringing the Word to all.

The Father gave the Word ().
The Son demonstrated the Word ().
The Holy Spirit wrote the Word.
2 Peter 1:20–21 ESV
20 knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone’s own interpretation. 21 For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

He is active through the Word today.

He isn’t an emotion pulling the heart wherever humanity desires, no God the Spirit is active through the message He delivered.
Heb
Hebrews 4:12 ESV
12 For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
He also isn’t just sitting by and doing nothing like far too many think in the church today.
The Holy Spirit is active in our lives, but His activity will not exceed the Word.
Galatians 5:18 ESV
18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

Summery

The Holy Spirit isn’t the “third-wheel” in the Godhead, He is a vital part of the Godhead and because He is God we know He is active in demonstrating His love for us.

God The Spirit Is Love

He is love.

Once again we know a great deal of the Father’s love and the Son’s love but many don’t know of the “love of the Spirit.”
Rom 15:30
Romans 15:30 ESV
30 I appeal to you, brothers, by our Lord Jesus Christ and by the love of the Spirit, to strive together with me in your prayers to God on my behalf,

He lovingly searched God to give us what we needed.

Remember the words of Paul as he defended his apostleship.
1 Cor 2:10
1 Corinthians 2:10 ESV
10 these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God.
John 16:13 ESV
13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.

He lovingly seals our inheritance.

The Holy Spirit is the promised seal of approval wherein we are guaranteed our inheritance if we stay faithful.
Ephesians 1:13–14 ESV
13 In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.
James 1:12 ESV
12 Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.
This means the Holy Spirit plays a vital role in our salvation and everlasting life with the Father and Son.
Galatians 6:8 ESV
8 For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.
Romans 8:11 ESV
11 If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.

He lovingly intercedes on our behalf.

This isn’t the same thing as “mediator.”
Spiritual mediation is that of Jesus pleading our case for salvation before the Father ().
This is intercession.
Spiritual intercession is interpretation and thus the Holy Spirit interprets our “needs” in our weaknesses to the Father.
Romans 8:26 ESV
26 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.
Romans 8:26–27 ESV
26 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. 27 And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.
Rom
In other words God would not hear our prayers without the Holy Spirit making these intercessions.

Summery

It is Jesus that searches the mind and heart of His creation.
Revelation 2:23 ESV
23 and I will strike her children dead. And all the churches will know that I am he who searches mind and heart, and I will give to each of you according to your works.
Not only do we have a Mediator & Intercessor to the Father in Jesus for salvation but we have an Intercessor to the Father in the Holy Spirit for our prayers.
So, because God the Spirit loves us Jesus can know us even better.

Conclusion

The Holy Spirit not only is a part of the Godhead, He is a vital part of our salvation both leading up to our obedience to the gospel and after.
He loves you and I just as much as the Father and the Son.
Invitation
Isaiah 59:1–2 ESV
1 Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save, or his ear dull, that it cannot hear; 2 but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear.
Php 6:
Philippians 2:6–7 ESV
6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.
