Jesus and the Woman of Samaria

4 Now when Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John 2(although Jesus himself did not baptize, but only his disciples), 3 he left Judea and departed again for Galilee. 4 And he had to pass through Samaria. 5 So he came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near the field that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. 6 Jacob’s well was there; so Jesus, wearied as he was from his journey, was sitting beside the well. It was about the sixth hour.

7 A woman from Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink.”

Do we live with Purpose?

not even my main sermon really PDL book, did jesus read it joke...

7 A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give Me a drink.” 8 For His disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.

9 Then the woman of Samaria said to Him, “How is it that You, being a Jew, ask a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?” For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.

10 Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.”

11 The woman said to Him, “Sir, You have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep. Where then do You get that living water? 12 Are You greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank from it himself, as well as his sons and his livestock?”

13 Jesus answered and said to her, “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.”

15 The woman said to Him, “Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come here to draw.”

16 Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.”

17 The woman answered and said, “I have no husband.”

Jesus said to her, “You have well said, ‘I have no husband,’ 18 for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; in that you spoke truly.”

19 The woman said to Him, “Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet. 20 Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, and you Jews say that in Jerusalem is the place where one ought to worship.”

21 Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming when you will neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, worship the Father. 22 You worship what you do not know; we know what we worship, for salvation is of the Jews. 23 But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. 24 God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”

25 The woman said to Him, “I know that Messiah is coming” (who is called Christ). “When He comes, He will tell us all things.”

26 Jesus said to her, “I who speak to you am He.”

some key themes thus far in this chapter...
Purposed Life v. 1-4
Time with the Father v. 4
Counter Culture v. 4-26
Living Water v. 13-15
True Worship v. 21-26
Jesus’ Divinity v. 26
from this we will glean three points.
the first...

1. Live with Purpose

knowing the will of God
I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. ()
in order to do this we need to become new, be made alive in him, to know from where we have come and from what we have been saved, new creations...
1 Thessalonians 5:18 NKJV
in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
^^^^
Context, prayer… how to know the will is word and prayer
lets chat about prayer...

Listen to God...

importance of prayer, will, relationship, devotion...

2. Live with Faith

(talk about faith, what it is and how to obtain)

Experience God

1 My heart was pruned and its flower appeared,

then grace sprang up in it,

and it produced fruits for the Lord.

2 For the Most High circumcised me by his Holy Spirit,

then he uncovered my inward being toward him,

and filled me with his love.

3* And his circumcising became my salvation,

and I ran in the Way in his peace,

in the Way of truth.

4 From the beginning until the end

I received his knowledge.

5 And I was established upon the rock of truth,

where he had set me.

6* And speaking waters touched my lips

from the spring of the Lord generously.

7* And so I drank and became intoxicated,

from the living water that does not die.

8 And my intoxication was not with ignorance;

but I abandoned vanity;

9 And turned toward the Most High, my God,

and was enriched by his favors.

10 And I abandoned the folly cast upon the earth,

and stripped it off and cast it from me.

11 And the Lord renewed me with his garment,

and possessed me by his light.

12 And from above he gave me immortal rest;

and I became like the land which blossoms and rejoices in its fruits.

13 And the Lord (is) like the sun

upon the face of the land.

14 My eyes were enlightened,

and my face received the dew;

15 And my breath was refreshed

by the pleasant fragrance of the Lord.

by claiming to be living water Jesus is claiming divinity...
Jeremiah 2:13 NKJV
“For My people have committed two evils: They have forsaken Me, the fountain of living waters, And hewn themselves cisterns—broken cisterns that can hold no water.
Jeremiah 17:13 NKJV
O Lord, the hope of Israel, All who forsake You shall be ashamed. “Those who depart from Me Shall be written in the earth, Because they have forsaken the Lord, The fountain of living waters.”
what was the jewish understanding of the phrase living waters...
{Then will the eyes of the blind be opened and the ears of the deaf unstopped. Then will the lame leap like a deer, and the mute tongue shout for joy. "Water will gush forth in the wilderness and streams in the desert. The burning sand will become a pool, the thirsty ground bubbling springs ." What we are seeing in the text is the Holy Spirt or a blessing by God, because where the jewish people are in desert areas Egypt and Israel where rain in not common, the Jewish people are using this text to thank God for the water, that is keeping them alive. With that we can see the fact even more so in , , "The earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord as the waters cover the sea."}
What was the cultural context… grk...
“If the gods shall some day see fit not to grant the Greeks rain, but shall afflict them with a long drought, the Greeks will be swept away by a famine, since they have nothing to rely on but rain from Zeus, and have no other resources for water.” (Heroditus 2:13)
The fact that in both the New and Old Testaments is the fact that Water is being used as a metaphor for Faith.
Living water is true faith that lasts on transcends...

3. Live with Worship

more than a ritual...
John 4:21–26 NKJV
Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming when you will neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, worship the Father. You worship what you do not know; we know what we worship, for salvation is of the Jews. But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” The woman said to Him, “I know that Messiah is coming” (who is called Christ). “When He comes, He will tell us all things.” Jesus said to her, “I who speak to you am He.”
