The Characters of This Section

Notes

This genre of story telling sets out to teach up moral lessons.

In order to discern what is being taught we need to know the characters and their purpose in the greater story.

I think we need to make a habit of praising God even in the challenges.

The Sons of God

We start out seeing these angelic beings that can stand before the Holy God without being destroyed.

This s a privilege not allowed to mortals before the coming of Jesus.

This means this is a gathering quite different then our day to day experience with God.

These angels are seeing what we do not get to see.

There is some kind of heavenly council meeting taking place, with angelic beings standing before God.

Why does bad stuff happen to good people.

The Lord

Ancient peoples believed in many God’s that where constantly at odds with each other which brought about natural phenomenon, like storms or disease.

Although we are looking at a scene where God interacts with heavenly beings he is in charge, nothing is happening without his permission.

God is in charge this is his meeting, and he has an unexpected guest

Where does our pain origonate, why does it come to us?

I live a really priveledged exisitance and even in light of that I feel like I dont fully explore my allegiance to God as king

Satan

God not only allows rebellious man to stand in his presence without dying, he also is allowing this fallen angel to stand before him and even oppose him.

We see God’s gracious character on display.

All people suffer, some more than others.

The source behind the source seesm to be the governance of God.

Otherwise its random and meaningless.

One who opposes.

Satan in this book is seen as a challenger to God, questioning parts of his character and of Job’s character.

Job

Suffering is universal.

Causes of Sufffering.

The people of Israel believed that they where the only ones who could reflect God’s righteous character and that the sign of them doing it well was many material blessings.

Enter Job, a non Israelite who is of high moral character and very materially wealthy.

Not sure yet

Non-Israelite, yet he is full of virtue.

He is also extremely wealthy.

Satan interjects that the wealth is the source of his virtue and not his love for God.

The Story Line.

Job is a Non Israelite.

Job has much in the way of possesions and piety.

A few things can be said about the heavenly council meeting but are they significat to young people?

Ha stan manes the challenger, not a proper name but seems to be his very character and identity.

What are the motives behid jobs obedience.

Much of this is covered as we explored the different characters but now if we focus in on the story what we see should make us ask some hard questions.

The question for me is how innicent can Job be in light of mans fallen nature?

Job thinks he is in the midst of a justifying trial before God...but there is nothing to win.

Is this the Satan of NT text?

The Gathering

Why would God allow this fallen or opposing angel to stand in on his heavenly council meetings?

Why have a board meeting at all if you are omnipotent?

The story does not let us in on the answers and that lack of answers should draw us in the surprise should get us interested and asking questions.

Satan Allowed to Test Job

6 Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came among them.

7 The Lord said to Satan, “From where have you come?” Satan answered the Lord and said, “From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking up and down on it.”

There seems to be a confab in heaven where all the angelic beings come before the Lord.

At the confab an angel that opposes God come before the Lord and accuses Job of only loving God because he gets stuff out of the relationship.

It is transactional and not actually love.

God give Satan permission to take out the transactional nature of the relationship.

Only after this permission is given can satan come after Job.

The Challenge

The real question here is this, do righteous people actually love God for God’s sake or for the sake of the benefits.

The first one if right worship the second is idolatry.

8 And the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, who fears God and turns away from evil?” 9 Then Satan answered the Lord and said, “Does Job fear God for no reason?

10 Have you not put a hedge around him and his house and all that he has, on every side?

You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land.

The Permission

For us is the warning on how to be mindful that the accuser might come to attack you.

He is an advisary and is looking for your weekness.

Life is not a game.

God in Christ will have his recompense against the accuser.

None of the worl of the devil goes unoticed.

This should stop us in our tracks.

God has given permission to satan to disrupt Job’s very life and even kill his family members.

Not to punish or to discipline, but to prove his faithfulness.

This should really get us asking questions about God and if he is the origin of the bad things that happen.

Questions for the text

Ther are portions of the scripture that are descriptive, but the cross refences can help us take this descriptive passage of Job and see in it the prescription. .

What is the purpose of the this gathering?

God, Satan, Job.

In the heavenlys there seems to be a convication of sorts where even the fallen angels attend.

Satan seems to have the the right to travel back and forth across fallen creation.

Jobs righteousness seems to be a special case.

The touch of God can be healingor destruction.

Satans Destruction can be the touch of God.

Who is satan and where did his come from?

Is he right about Job?

Where might he show himself in your life?

If satan accused you before God, would he be correct in saying you love God because you are blessed?

or because you genuinely love God?
