Holman New Testament Commentary: Romans A. An Objection to the Grace in the Gospel (6:1–2)

Grace is not a license to sin because the recipient of grace has died to sin and can no longer live in it.

What Does a Dead Man Do?

Its My Party and I’ll do what I want to!

Vs 1 What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound?
slide -looking back at vs 20-21
Paul has a point counter point here . In vs 20-21 Paul explains the purpose of the law and that we are now covered under grace. That was his point
now vs 1 is the counter point to the inevitable falsehoods that would come out of this.
slide - Its not my party it’s God’s
-This is the main thing that we forget as Christians. I will be the first to admit that every person especially myself struggles with this, remember what was the original sin, it was satans pride. Yet we think of ourselves as the better because we maybe steal God’s glory in more subtle ways than storming the throne of God. (using that as a example not saying I know how the war in heaven happened) We do it in ways like man I did a good job teaching that lesson. “Nailed it”
-So what you do you think if sinning allows God’s grace to flow all the more should n’t we being doing our part to sin more?
Vs 2 By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it?
slide-By no means !
-Lets look at this from Websters point of view, the emphasis aside, what tell me what “by no means” means to you?
-anything, tools, intellect, might, will are all “means” to accomplish something, By this I could define Paul saying it should be impossible for us to sin for the purpose of the gain of grace.
slide-Zombies are not real!
vs 2b How can we who died to sin still live in it?
slide-I don’t have to do a whole lot of explaining here there is only one more verse that is clearer than this Whoever says “I know him” but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him
-I’m not calling for perfection but there has to be a difference in our lives with a desire to turn toward the truth of scripture and a conviction of the sin in our lives. If there isn’t that in your life maybe you need to look and see if you are really dead to sin. If you are not dead to sin you are not alive in Christ!
Vs 3-4  Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.
-Paul gives a great explanation of baptism and the symbolism of it.
-Going under the water symbolizes Christ’s death and going into the grave
-While coming up out of the water symbolizes just as Christ was raise from the dead we to are raised with Him into newness of life.
-the Greek here really means that we share in His death
VS 5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his
-the greek word used here is symphytos, it has an idea of growing together or planting together
-does anyone know anything about grafting of trees Its pretty simple actually Does anyone know why we do this? If you took seeds out of a grannysmith apple and planted it what kindof tree would you end up with?
-Our great hope that we will certainly be brought to glory. the day our bodies fail is the day we will be resurrected into God glory.
VS 6-7 We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. 7 For one who has died has been set free from sin.
-what does it mean by old self and what has happened to it?
-this is the person we used to be, the old sinful self, the unbelieving person
-it has been crucified with Christ which means that it when we become Christians there is a change, no change no Christians,
-this is done so our sinful selves is brought to nothing, its not done away with yet but we are no longer slaves to it.
-What was the point of the crucifixion? We are free from sin
-this brings up another brief point of are Christians to judge others?
- tells us there is only one who is worthy to judge and that is Christ
-now accountability is a different matter that often gets confused with judgement, and yes if you call yourself a Christian we are told to hold each other accountable.
-the reason I bring this up is we often want to hold the unregenerate accountable but remember they are still slaves to sin so we can not blame them for acting upon their masters wishes!
slide-Thing is just as they act according to their master wishes, we should act according to our masters wishes. We are no longer slaves to sin!

Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. 9 We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. 10 For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God

VS 8-10  Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. 9 We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. 10 For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God
-so the opposite to dying is what? living
-if we believe in a living God but one who died we must believe by common sense that Christ rose from the grave.
-and by this if we believe we have shared in his death then common sense would tell us that we also share in His life.
-How can death have dominion over Christ? We often forget that Christ is was since the time of His birth and still is 100% human and 100% God but being human He subjected himself to the laws that govern man, hunger sleep, emotions, sickness, and even death.
-When He rose from the grave he conquered death and through that He has made a way for us, for He died to sin.
-But Jesus had no sin on earth right?
no He lead a perfect life but on that cross He took my sin and your sin, He became sin. and the greatest words said on the cross “It is Finished”
-Don’t miss these great words from our passage “once for all”
-What does it mean “the life He lives, He lives to God”
slide “-but in light of the fact that He lives, He lives to God” Holman
Guys Christ redemptive work is done. It was done on the cross here we are 2000 yrs later and His work on the cross was still enough for us today
He now lives on this side of the cross at the right hand of the Father making intercession for us living for the glory of God which is His glory.
VS 11 So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.
-So I have one question for you
Slide -Do you consider yourselves dead to sin and alive in Christ?
SLide- So what then?

So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.

VS 12-14 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions. 13 Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness. 14 For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.
Guys we are set free from sin, you will not live a perfect life, I can’t do it Pastor Jamie can’t do it, Pastor Mark can’t do it not even Mr. Greg but that is not to say we have not been set free of it. Has there been a change in your life. These last verses tell us what a redeemed person should do and the awesome thing is Christ’s work on the cross has “once for all” been completed which means that - slide- He has given us the power or rather broken the power that sin had over us so that we are no long slaves to sin. So stop acting like it.
