Introduction:
Minor Prophets
12 Minor Prophets also known as the book of 12 because they would have been typically circulated on the same scroll.
Hosea is the first of the minor prophets in the cannon.
Prophetic Career ranges from Jereboem II to Hezekiah.
A prophet for the Northern Kingdom.
During his time as prophet the nation went from general affluence and military might to poverty and defeat and back again.
After Jereboem’s death, Israel degenerated into an state of almost anarchy going through 6 kings in 30 years.
The real reason Israel crumbled during this time was God’s judgement on His people for their sin.
Hosea and Amos are written to that end.
Structure:
Ch. 1-3 Draw a parallel between Hosea and the Lord ().
Hosea is to name his children after the Lord’s rebukes for His people (, , ).
Hosea toggles between first and third person narratives.
Major Theme
The exclusivity between the marriage relationship and intimacy within those confines also demonstrates the exclusivity in our spiritual relationship with God.
Our relationship with God, and consequently a spouse, is not based on geography or lineage but faithfulness.
Faithfulness to God is like faithfulness to our spouse. . .
Faithfulness is full-time!
Man’s Solution to man is idolatry!
Church as man’s solution never works, but a consistently faithful relationship with the Lord is the solution to every ill.
