God’s Chosen Ones

IX. Of God’s Purpose of Grace

IX. Of God’s Purpose of Grace
We believe that election is the eternal purpose of God, according to which he graciously regenerates, sanctifies, and saves sinners; that being perfectly consistent with the free agency of man, it comprehends all the means in connection with the end; that it is a most glorious display of God's sovereign goodness, being infinitely free, wise, holy and unchangeable; that it utterly excludes boasting, and promotes humility, love, prayer, praise, trust in God, and active imitation of his free mercy; that it encourages the use of means in the highest degree; that it may be ascertained by its effects in all who truly believe the gospel, that it is the foundation of Christian assurance; and that to ascertain it with regard to ourselves demands and deserves the utmost diligence.

e; and that to ascertain it with regard to ourselves demands and deserves the utmost diligence.
1 Peter 1:1–2 ESV
Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who are elect exiles of the Dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in the sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and for sprinkling with his blood: May grace and peace be multiplied to you.
1 pet 1:
with regard to ourselves demands and deserves the utmost diligence.
Ephesians 1:3–4 ESV
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love
Revelation 13:5–9 ESV
And the beast was given a mouth uttering haughty and blasphemous words, and it was allowed to exercise authority for forty-two months. It opened its mouth to utter blasphemies against God, blaspheming his name and his dwelling, that is, those who dwell in heaven. Also it was allowed to make war on the saints and to conquer them. And authority was given it over every tribe and people and language and nation, and all who dwell on earth will worship it, everyone whose name has not been written before the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who was slain. If anyone has an ear, let him hear:
Rev 13:
1 Peter 1:1–2 ESV
Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who are elect exiles of the Dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in the sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and for sprinkling with his blood: May grace and peace be multiplied to you.

Not in-time

Because that is NOWHERE taught in scripture
Joshua 24:14–15 ESV
“Now therefore fear the Lord and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness. Put away the gods that your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”
1 Kings 18:21 ESV
And Elijah came near to all the people and said, “How long will you go limping between two different opinions? If the Lord is God, follow him; but if Baal, then follow him.” And the people did not answer him a word.
In both these instances Joshua/Elijah was speaking to God’s (already) chosen people
Psalm 2:7 ESV
I will tell of the decree: The Lord said to me, “You are my Son; today I have begotten you.
This is of Christ… in the eternal day

Not apart from means and faith

chosen IN Christ
God’s election is: perfectly consistent with the free agency of man, it comprehends all the means in connection with the end;
God’s election is: perfectly consistent with the free agency of man, it comprehends all the means in connection with the end;

Not of pride

Not denying experience and change

Peter: in the sanctification of the spirit FOR obedience
John 3:20 ESV
For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed.
John 3:36 ESV
Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.
jn 3:20
John 3:21 ESV
But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.”
John 3:22 ESV
After this Jesus and his disciples went into the Judean countryside, and he remained there with them and was baptizing.
While the doctrine of eternal election is difficult to understand and sometimes unsettling because it puts salvation back in the eternal realm with God, it should be comforting when we realize that God has been working our salvation from the foundation of the world.
So then:
Colossians 3:12 ESV
Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience,

Bearing and Forgiving

Togetherness

Hebrews 10:25 ESV
not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.
neglect… indicates that the assembling is a good, a resource for you
Sitting in a church no more makes you a Christian than sitting in a garage makes you a car
of course, cars everyone need maintenance, wether in a physical garage or not
It’s better to be on the lake thinking of God than to be in church thinking about the lake
but then who is advocating for these?
The Bible teaches us to be an active member of a local church, engaging all our hearts and minds in worship on the Lord’s Day.
Bearing with one another = living life together
Forgiving as we have been forgiven
requires Holy Spirit
requires us to have been together enough to be offended

Put on Love

does NOT mean feel a way about people
John 13:35 ESV
By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
John 13:13–18 ESV
You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you. Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them. I am not speaking of all of you; I know whom I have chosen. But the Scripture will be fulfilled, ‘He who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me.’
because we are chosen of God, we should serve each other
jn 13:13-
John 13:35 ESV
By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
it absolutely means we lay down our preferences and druthers in mutual submission one to another

Be thankful

For the unity
For the peace
They are gifts of God, not our due

Let the Word of Christ dwell in You

jn 5:
John 5:38–40 ESV
and you do not have his word abiding in you, for you do not believe the one whom he has sent. You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me, yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life.
Their error was not in searching the scriptures, but in misusing them

teaching and admonishing one another

I am not prepared to teach
This is The Word, not tradition or opinion

all wisdom

jn 5:38-
Hebrews 6:1 ESV
Therefore let us leave the elementary doctrine of Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God,
Hebrews 6:1–3 ESV
Therefore let us leave the elementary doctrine of Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, and of instruction about washings, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. And this we will do if God permits.
Hebrews 6:1–2 ESV
Therefore let us leave the elementary doctrine of Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, and of instruction about washings, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment.
There is more, but never less, than a call for sinners to repent to be done on any given Sunday or Wednesday.
The Missionary Baptist churches have been anemic in our worship and preaching for not seeking to deliver the whole counsel of God, not pressed to teach all wisdom.
God is NOT glorified in this and we as a people suffer.
the Deacon who was ignorant of the faith
Deacon asking how we are to know things?
In the past 5 years there has not been many portions of scripture or topics that we have not at least touched on. For as long as God allows me to stay, I intend by His grace and leading, and your prayerful, engaged support to continue that pattern to continue.

singing

the singing is a part of the teaching and admonishing
That necessitates being careful about song choice
it is also the expected behavior that God’s chosen people sing
Moses, Miriam, Mary, Zechariah

In His Name

This does not mean He signs off on whatever we do
This DOES mean we do as Christ taught and the Spirit leads
This DOES apply to all of our lives
May God bless us in the coming year with a Holy Remembrance of who we are in Christ, and that we would move forward together, in unity and peace with God and each other, learning, encouraging, singing, and giving God all thanks.
