INTRODUCTION

Today is the last Sunday of 2018. 2019 is just around the corner and who knows what may come our way in the days ahead.
Whatever it maybe does not need to trouble us if we remember to Trust/Believe in Jesus and ASK Jesus to show us the way.
The book of John seems so simple and straight forward but some find controversy, in the date and authorship to me the solution is to go with what had been the standard for a long time. John is the author and it was written around the end of the first century between 60 and 70 A.D. . The structure seems to be Prologue 1:1-18 , Epilogue/Summary 21:1-25 The signs 1:19-12:50 the Passion 13:1-20:31. The recipients were early Christians.
This passage more than any other that we have read in John so far makes a clear and compelling presence for Jesus as the Son of God. There are two words to pay very close attention to they are, oida is used =we know in V.5 twice. ginosko = ye has known in V.7 three times . oida means - to know by reflection or thinking. ginosko means- to Know by observation or sense. So lets look at three aspects from
The signs 1:19-12:50 the Passion 13:1-20:31. The recipients were early Christians.
oida - to know by reflection or thinking
ginosko- Know by observation or sense
TRUST, ASK, and the Divinity of CHRIST
V. 5-7 Trust
Notes
14:5 Response - Thomas said to Him,
Address - "Lord,
Deniel - we don't know (oida) where You are goining
Question - so how can we know (odia) the way?
Thomas is having the same problem most people have we called upon to trust. I cannot think it thought and I have no proof so how can I know. Trust is not a head thing it is a heart thing. However do not fear for soon Jesus will tie together both head and heart.

:6 Response - Jesus answered,
Fact - I am the way the way
AND
the truth
AND
the life.
Denial - No one comes to the Father
except
through Me.
"I am" not just an abstract idea but the total incorporation of all. We are not talking here of a method or a syatem but a person. He is the "way" He is "Truth" He is "life" In New Testament time the followers of Jesus were called people of the "Way" See Abstract truth is turned into a person. The Jews could not understand that Jesus could rebuild the temple in three days becaus they did not know that Jesus is the Temple. The Samaritan woman searched for water but Jesus said I am living water. The Jews wanted a sign comparable to the manna given in the wilderness Jesus said I am the bread of life. Martha believed in the general resurrection but Jesus said I am the resurrection. Thomas wanted to know what was the path or the method But Jesus said I am the Way, The Truth and the Life. Jesus also said I am the door, the Good Shepherd and the Light. In every aspect He is palanning for us.
:7 Condition - If you really knew (ginosko) Me you would know (ginosko)
My Fatheras well."
Prediction - From now on you do know (ginosko) Him
AND
have seen Him"
Here the verb to know changes from that of insight, thought or reflection to know by experience. The disciples have heard the teaching but they have also been witness to the teaching and person of Jesus. Now Jesus says you have a deeper knowledge than you first imagined because as I was revealing myself to you came to know the Father My Father. This is not the end of knowledge particularly not revelation. For now that you know this much you are able to comprehend more of Me through the Father. Jesus is the revelation of the Father
:8 Response - Philip said,
Address - "Lord,
Request - show us the Father
AND
that will be enough for us."
Philip like many of us was looking for a physical form of some kind. He has not grasped the concept of Jesus going away, Jesus and the Father being the same or the revealed idea captured in the way, the truth and the life.
V.9 Response - Jesus answered,
Question - "Don't you know Me Philip,
Specific - even after I have been among you such a long
time?
Concept - Anyone who has seen Me has seen the Father
How can you say 'show us the Father?'
Jesus is useing the word "know" here in a revealing sense. All the words and deeds of Jesus were to show the Father to the diciples and the world. Yet even the disciples show how little they understand the teachings and the very presence of Jesus. That is why Pentecost and the Holy Spirit were needed. He, the Holy Spirit, will take the things of mine and show it unto you.
V.10 Question - Don't you believe that I am in the Father
V.10 Question - Don't you believe that I am in the Father
AND
Father is in Me?
Concept - The words I say to you are not just My own.
RATHER
it is the Father living in Me.
Act - who is doing His work.
The teaching and the deeds of Jesus were to show both power and intellect. They were to show how God the Father worked, His character and to explain the why. They also explain the character and attitude of Jesus. The Father is more than the Law. Jesus is more than a man. We mis so much when we confine the power and spirit of Jesus to our special doctrines and beliefs. Jesus and the Father are one. Jesus is both human and divine. One with the Father.
V.11 Command - "Believe Me when I say that I am in the Father
AND
the Father is in Me;
OR
at least believe
Reason - on the evidence of the miracles themselves.
Accept by what you have seen and heard or just on the bases of the miracles. That I and the Father are one. How could one do the divine miracles I have done without being divine.
V.12 Concept - I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in Me
Predition - will do what I have have been doing.
Spicific - He will go even greater things than these
Reason - because I am going to the Father.
Here is the first real presenting of the future plan for disciples of Christ. Here is the broad plan. the multiplying of Christ's work. Work that is unleashed by the return of the Son to the glory He had with the Father.
V.13 AND
Prediction - I will do whatever you ask
Specific - in My name,
Purpose - so that the Son may bring glory to the Father.
Now we have a second piece. The Christ will do what ever is asked in His name.
This probably the most misunderstood verse in the Bible. This is not a blank check to ask for anything that comes into you mind but a possibility of power through prayer for the honor and glory of God. The first boundary is "in My name" The name of anyone particularly in the scripture carries with it the honor, dignity and character attributes of that person. So to ask selfishly, childishly or recklessly is outside the "NAME" In the early chapters of John these words were attached to belief for salvation. We are to pray "in the name of Jesus" but not as a formula but as a desire for Hid name to reign first and foremost in the hearts of people to bring them salvation from sin. The last part of the verse plainly tells us it is for glory to the Father and since the Father and the Son are one to the Son as well. Remember we do not pray to Christ as if He were a separate person from the Father but in full recognition the two are one.
V.14 Condition - You may ask Me for anthing
Specific - in My name
AND
Prediction - I will do it.
This give us the direction to pray in the name of Jesus "ask Me"
Jesus again aaerts that He will do it. Because of who He is not because we pushed the right button.
