An Ordinary Woman
Luke 1:27-
-Mary did not come from Wealth
-Mary did not come from Wealth
-Mary was not well known
-Mary was from Nazareth, which is was essentially the hood
-Mary Fiancee Joseph was not from a prominent family.
(v.26-27) Gabriel arrives to alert Mary of God’s plan for her
(v.28)
Notice his Greeting “favored one!”
Now you remember I told you she was not rich, nor middle class she was poor.
She was not born to a prominent family.
And she was from the hood.
Now to tell me what you think her favor was based on???
-it was based on the rest of the verse “The Lord is with you?”
(v.29)
Notice Mary reaction to this call: “But she was very perplexed at this statement!”
that word perplexed means mentally disturb.
It carries the idea of being stirred up.
It like Mary was saying “Does he know who I am?”
I ain’t all that
An Undeserving Woman
(v.28) “You are graciously accepted”
Tell me who this applies to our attitude of service towards God??
-When you understand that he is under no divine mandate to use you and it is totally by his grace that anyone is found worthy it makes it easy to serve.
A Spirit Filled Woman
(v.30)
In the presence of this majestic being Mary was fearful
(v.31-32)
This is an announcement of Jesus lineage.
And that he will come from the house of David.
(v.33)
This is in fulfillment of the prophecy concerning our Lord’s Kingdom length and breathe.
It will be over the house of Jacob and it will have no end.
(v.34) Mary says in a whisper “How can this be, since I am virgin?”
(v.35)
This is a God thing.....You will be filled or consumed with the Spirit of God and he will do it.
Look at Mary response:
The Spirit only fills those who are willing to submit to his will.
An Available Woman
Mary could have said let me get back to brother Angel.
Now ultimately she might have decided to obey, but what do you notice about her response.
It was an immediate obedience, not a get back to you later obedience.
Sometimes in our Christian walk there will be times that God allows for you to have time to pray and seek confirmation before you obey him, but sometimes there are some immediate obedience challenges that God will require of you.
No time to pray, no time to call a prayer partner, no time to confer with your best friend.
Just obey no question ask.
-No notice what she was submitting to:
All of her life plans: Marriage, Children, and Family she gave to the master.
A Praising Woman
-When God puts challenging circumstances in our lives, we either worship or whine....
What do you think about this statement?
Remember the children of Israel God was destroying their enemies and yet they still complained and whined.
-Now this praise is before her Husband Joseph commits to stay with her instead of divorcing her.
It is easy to praise after the blessing, but she praises before that.
Notice what she is praising for: “And my Spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior” her praised is not based on physical things, but on that which is “Eternal”
