Exposition
Matthew 25:14 ESV
“For it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted to them his property.
“it” ?
Kingdom of God
Matthew 25:15 ESV
To one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away.
Talents = “large sum of money” one commentator says it is about equivalent to a laborer’s salary for half a lifetime.
Minimum wage: statewide, 2019, $12/hour
$480/week
x 52 =24,960
based on working full time at minimum wage from age 17 to a retirement age of 67 (50 years), the lifetime wage in 2019 dollars for a minimum wage employee is $1,248,000
half of which is $624,000
a substantial amount of money
Matthew 25:16 ESV
He who had received the five talents went at once and traded with them, and he made five talents more.
Matthew 25:17 ESV
So also he who had the two talents made two talents more.
Matthew 25:18 ESV
But he who had received the one talent went and dug in the ground and hid his master’s money.
Matthew 25:19 ESV
Now after a long time the master of those servants came and settled accounts with them.
Matthew 25:20 ESV
And he who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five talents more, saying, ‘Master, you delivered to me five talents; here, I have made five talents more.’
Matthew 25:21 ESV
His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’
Matthew 25:22 ESV
And he also who had the two talents came forward, saying, ‘Master, you delivered to me two talents; here, I have made two talents more.’
Matthew 25:23 ESV
His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’
Matthew 25:24 ESV
He also who had received the one talent came forward, saying, ‘Master, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you scattered no seed,
Matthew 25:25 ESV
so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here, you have what is yours.’
Matthew 25:26 ESV
But his master answered him, ‘You wicked and slothful servant! You knew that I reap where I have not sown and gather where I scattered no seed?
Matthew 25:27 ESV
Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers, and at my coming I should have received what was my own with interest.
Matthew 25:28 ESV
So take the talent from him and give it to him who has the ten talents.
Matthew 25:29 ESV
For to everyone who has will more be given, and he will have an abundance. But from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.
Matthew 25:30 ESV
And cast the worthless servant into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’
Points:
Discourse point:

The Kingdom of Heaven is coming so be watchful...

Passage principle:

Main principle: The Kingdom of Heaven is not “one-size-fits-all”

I. The Kingdom of Heaven is filled with workers (16-18)

II. The Kingdom of Heaven will be made complete in “a long time” (19)

Time for “life and trade”
Imminent does not equal Immediate

III. Kingdom workers are not judged by their fruit but by their faithful work (20-23)

IV. Kingdom workers work! (24-30)
