Introduction

Firefly - a story about a bunch of misfit space cowboys who were smugglers. What you see though is that unbeknownst to them, one of the items they were contracted to smuggle contained a teenage girl who the government was trying to kill. This girl changed them. Through the first season, we see that they turn from mere smugglers to a group of people simply trying to do the right thing and save the girl from the futuristic oppressive galactic government.
This show is one of the biggest upsets in recent sci-fi TV history. Ended at only one season.
People wanted more. The internet blew up (okay, a few forums on the internet blew up…). So they decided to make a movie so that people would feel better about how the tv show ended.
People like a particular kind of resolution to a story. Especially when specific story genres beg particular endings. Fairly tails all end with a happier ever after. Most adventure stories end with the character making a full circle but being changed by their experience.
As we approach our passage today in , we see a similar thing at play. The other three gospels have fairly similar endings. After the empty tomb is found, jesus address the disciples with a charge. We will see today that ’s ending happens to be more like the firefly ending then what one would expect seeing the ending of the other four gospels.
Mark 16:1–8 NASB95
1 When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, bought spices, so that they might come and anoint Him. 2 Very early on the first day of the week, they came to the tomb when the sun had risen. 3 They were saying to one another, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance of the tomb?” 4 Looking up, they saw that the stone had been rolled away, although it was extremely large. 5 Entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting at the right, wearing a white robe; and they were amazed. 6 And he said to them, “Do not be amazed; you are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who has been crucified. He has risen; He is not here; behold, here is the place where they laid Him. 7 “But go, tell His disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see Him, just as He told you.’ ” 8 They went out and fled from the tomb, for trembling and astonishment had gripped them; and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.
Mark 1:1–8 NASB95
1 The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. 2 As it is written in Isaiah the prophet: Behold, I send My messenger ahead of You, Who will prepare Your way; 3 The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make ready the way of the Lord, Make His paths straight.’ ” 4 John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 5 And all the country of Judea was going out to him, and all the people of Jerusalem; and they were being baptized by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins. 6 John was clothed with camel’s hair and wore a leather belt around his waist, and his diet was locusts and wild honey. 7 And he was preaching, and saying, “After me One is coming who is mightier than I, and I am not fit to stoop down and untie the thong of His sandals. 8 “I baptized you with water; but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”
Lets Pray -
Mark 1:
Mark 16:1 NASB95
1 When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, bought spices, so that they might come and anoint Him.

Emphasize the importance of woman witnesses
Emphasize the importance of woman witnesses
anoint - to put spices on to offset the smell - did not expect the resurrection
Mark 16:2–3 NASB95
2 Very early on the first day of the week, they came to the tomb when the sun had risen. 3 They were saying to one another, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance of the tomb?”
Mark
Acts of Love don't Always foresee obstacles
Mark 16:4 NASB95
4 Looking up, they saw that the stone had been rolled away, although it was extremely large.
Mark
“Rolled” is a passive verb. thats kinda odd as rolled normally is an active verb. Thus this is referred as a Divine Passive
Mark 16:5–6 NASB95
5 Entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting at the right, wearing a white robe; and they were amazed. 6 And he said to them, “Do not be amazed; you are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who has been crucified. He has risen; He is not here; behold, here is the place where they laid Him.
THEY WERE AMAZED
“Do not be amazed” — Huh?
He has Risen - Again Passive. Likely a divine passive again
Mark 16:7 NASB95
7 “But go, tell His disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see Him, just as He told you.’ ”
Disciples werent there - they had fled
Mark 16:8 NASB95
8 They went out and fled from the tomb, for trembling and astonishment had gripped them; and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.
THEY WERE AFFRAID
Please turn to the beginning of your bible
End of mark - Affirmed by Clement (D.215), Origin (D.339), Jerome (D.420)
Ends they were afraid.
In fact this is a very appropriate end to mark. They were afraid and they were amazed verse walkthrough.
But like the TV show Firefly, people eventually wanted additional resolution to the story. After all, the other three gospels have similar endings. The don't end with the empty tomb account, they go further to have Jesus addressing the disciples.
They didnt see the perfect ending that mark already had - As quickly as it began, it ended.
