(NLT) — 22 After that, Aaron raised his hands toward the people and blessed them. Then, after presenting the sin offering, the burnt offering, and the peace offering, he stepped down from the altar. 23 Then Moses and Aaron went into the Tabernacle, and when they came back out, they blessed the people again, and the glory of the Lord appeared to the whole community. 24 Fire blazed forth from the Lord’s presence and consumed the burnt offering and the fat on the altar. When the people saw this, they shouted with joy and fell face down on the ground.
KEY POINT- Fire often times represents God’s presence throughout the word.
(NLT) — 24 The Lord your God is a devouring fire; he is a jealous God.
(NLT) — 1 When Solomon finished praying, fire flashed down from heaven and burned up the burnt offerings and sacrifices, and the glorious presence of the Lord filled the Temple.
(NLT) — 11 “I baptize with water those who repent of their sins and turn to God. But someone is coming soon who is greater than I am—so much greater that I’m not worthy even to be his slave and carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.
(NLT) — 3 Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them.
(NLT) — 49 “I have come to set the world on fire, and I wish it were already burning!
KEY- Fire doesn’t just represent God’s presence, but it shows what can be in God’s presence
(NLT) — 1 Aaron’s sons Nadab and Abihu put coals of fire in their incense burners and sprinkled incense over them. In this way, they disobeyed the Lord by burning before him the wrong kind of fire, different than he had commanded. 2 So fire blazed forth from the Lord’s presence and burned them up, and they died there before the Lord. 3 Then Moses said to Aaron, “This is what the Lord meant when he said, ‘I will display my holiness through those who come near me. I will display my glory before all the people.’ ” And Aaron was silent.
KEY POINT-
There is a lot to cover to get to the main point of this text…
POINT- God is holy.
(NLT) — 45 For I, the Lord, am the one who brought you up from the land of Egypt, that I might be your God. Therefore, you must be holy because I am holy.
DEFINE- This word Holy is from the Hebrew word “qodes” and it means the quality of being set apart as opposed to common.
KEY POINT- Yes, David said there is a friend closer than a brother and he was prophesying Jesus, yes Moses spoke with God as one would speak with a friend and we too can do the same because we are able to enter the most holy place by the blood of Christ.
BUT… we can not treat a holy God as common God.
ILLUSTRATION- Think about one of the most holy things in your home (very literal definition of holy) It’s your toothbrush, -It has ONE purpose; you don’t use it on anything else… It is made for ONE person; don’t share it…
This is so important to your theology and understanding of God’s very character…
So often in the church we want holy results with a common approach…
(NLT) — 2 No one is holy like the Lord! There is no one besides you; there is no Rock like our God.
POINT- God’s holiness is praiseworthy.
(NLT) — 22 Then I will praise you with music on the harp, because you are faithful to your promises, O my God. I will sing praises to you with a lyre, O Holy One of Israel.
God is uncommon, unmatched he has no equal, he can’t be met…
KEY PONT- God’s holiness is at the foundation of our worship.
You might think, God is holy, ok I get it… I don’t think you do… I could spend the next several weeks teaching and preaching on the holiness of God and even still we all would lack true understanding of the truth that God is holy.
MAIN POINT- Fire represents God’s presence and incense represents worship you can gather from these 2 passages in Leviticus that God’s presence is to consume our worship.
DON’T ALLOW YOURSELF TO FALL INTO THE SAME TRAP AS NADAB AND ABIHU AND ALLOW SOMETHING OR SOMEONE OTHER THAN THE PRESENCE OF GOD TO CONSUME YOUR WORSHIP. WHEN YOU DO YOU BRING “STRANGE FIRE” INTO YOUR PLACE OF MEETING.

1. Strange Fire Is Man Made

The fire they used was not brought from the altar that God sent fire too.
You might think, why does this matter???
Our desire to worship is rooted in God’s holiness, our act of worship must come from the altar
