I. Jesus is God (vv.

1-5).

The Word is fully divine.

Exposition

In this passage, Jesus is called “the Word.”

This title brings together the Jewish idea of the Word of God as the revelation of who God is, and the secular philosophy of the day, which held that the ultimate beginning, source, and cause of all things was an original word, an idea from which all other words and ideas derive their being.

In calling Jesus “the Word,” John is saying that Jesus is the fulfillment of everything the OT pointed to and everything the secular philosophers looked for.

He is both the living Word of God and the ultimate source of all things.

In these verses, the Apostle John is making the bold, brash claim that Jesus is God.

In the beginning — Jesus is eternal

The Word — Jesus is the fulfillment of the OT

With God and fully God — Father and Son

The Word created all things

The Word is the source of life and light

Jesus himself claimed to be God.

Implication

The claim that Jesus is God is unique among major world religions.

Besides Christianity, the major world religions today are Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Taoism.

Not one of their founders or key leaders has ever claimed to be God.

Jesus is the only founder of a major world religion who himself claimed to be God.

II.

God became a man (v.

14).

The Word became flesh.

Exposition

No serious historian today doubts that Jesus was an actual person who truly existed in history.

So, the question is not was Jesus a real person; the question is was Jesus who he claimed to be? Was Jesus really God? Just for a moment, let’s pretend the answer is yes, Jesus was really God.

What does that mean?

Implications

God himself became an actual human being living in our world.

He’s not some invisible, theoretical person who only exists in books and stories—but he became an actual living, breathing, flesh-and-blood human being like you and me.

He left his throne in Heaven to be born of a virgin, a teenage girl who gave birth to the Son of God in a stable.

His first crib was feeding trough.

His adopted dad was a contractor.

They lived in a small town a few miles from nowhere.

God cares about our world and is personally involved in our lives.

Jesus came from the Father full of grace and truth, to pay for our sins by dying in our place on the cross, and to lead us back into a relationship with our Heavenly Father through faith in Christ.

Christ is revealed in us (vv.

The Word shines through personal testimony.

Application: If you’ve already trusted in Jesus as your great God and Savior, you’re in the same boat as John: You’ve been sent by God as a witness to testify about the light of Christ that fills your life.

Are you shining the light of Christ into the darkness around you? Are you sharing your story as a witness for Christ?
