Introduction

Merry Christmas - Happy new year
Today we are continuing in our journey through the tribes of Joshua. and we are looking at one of the most overlooked tribes but in my opinion one of the most interesting.
We are looking at the tribe of Dan the man
Dan the man was born to Bilhah Rachel's maidservant
Named Dan for the Hebrew word Judge or vindicate
coming from Genesis

When Rachel names Bilhah’s first son “Dan,” she says, “God has judged [or vindicated] me” (Gen 30:6)

The Name Daniel in the book of Daniel, likely means “god is my Judge”
Jacob’s blessing of his son in Genesis “Dan shall judge his people as one of the tribes of Israel” perhaps hinting that Dan is a weaker tribe or even that the tribe that became dan is not decedents of the man Dan

16 Dan shall judge his people

as one of the tribes of Israel.

17 Dan shall be a serpent on the way,

a viper on the road

that bites the heels of a horse,

so that its rider falls backward.

Joshua 19:40-48

Joshua 19:40–48 LEB
40 The seventh lot fell for the tribe of the descendants of Dan according to their families. 41 The border of their inheritance was Zorah, Eshtaol, Ir Shemesh, 42 Shaalabbin, Aijalon, Ithlah, 43 Elon, Timnah, Ekron, 44 Eltekeh, Gibbethon, Baalath, 45 Jehud, Bene Berak, Gath Rimmon, 46 Me Jarkon, Rakkon, with the border opposite Joppa. 47 The border of the descendants of Dan continued beyond them, because the descendants of Dan went up and fought with Lesham, and they captured and struck it with the edge of the sword, and they took possession of it and settled in it; and they called Leshem Dan, after the name of Dan their ancestor. 48 This is the inheritance of the tribe of the descendants of Dan according to their families, these cities and their villages.

Map of Israel

Dan in the center west coast
Notice the listing doesn’t have boarders just cities. The Tribe of Dan never controlled the territory originally assigned to them. there are no boundaries just these 18 cities. SO we have an idea of the land they were given.
As early as Judges 1:34-35 the tribe of Dan struggled to secure its territory
Judges 1:34–35 LEB
34 The Amorites pressed the descendants of Dan to the hill country, and they did not allow them to come down to the plain; 35 the Amorites were determined to live in Har-heres, in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim, but the hand of the house of Joseph was heavy on them, and they became subjected to forced labor.
So weakened by the Amorites, the “house of Joseph” or Ephraim oppressed the Danites, taking some of their territory and enslaving some of the population.
Dan will eventually relocate itself by capturing the city of Leshem(Laish), remaining it Dan
The exact history and setting of this is in question as to how this all happened but it happened
There are some notable things that happen in the tribe of Dan
A Danite assisted in the construction of the tabernacle in Exodus 31
Sampson was from the Tribe of Dan
though some would argue against this being a good thing
Judges 21:25 LEB
25 In those days there was no king in Israel; each one did what was right in his own eyes.
this really sums it up
Judges 18:1-31 tells the story of the people of Dan falling into idolatry. Right after migrating north they installed carved images. including idols taken from the lands.
as time goes on the problem only got worse. when Jeroboam splint the kingdom. he established a cult center in Bethel and Dan by installing Golden calves for the people of Israel to worship (1 Kings 12:25)
By the time of the New Testament Revelations 7:4-8 doesn’t even list Dan as a Tribe. A Jewish tradition relates that Dan was the most apostate tribe (Aune, Revelation 6–16, 462)

Apostasy

Apostasy is walking away from the faith. It is turning to something else. and It is a very real problem in the united states and the whole world
Studies are showing that any where from 59% to 88% of children raised in the church will leave the church. the variance is because of Demographics(who you are looking at; church as a whole, SBC, Catholics, do you count Submarine Christians ETC). But even at the lowest numbers it is over half.
And there are many things that lead people astray.
Religions
Ignorance
Never comitted
Hypocracy
The people of Dan walked away because they felt that other gods were just as good as YHWH and many young people feel list too. Is there a difference. They don’t see it. Proverbs 16:25 tells us there is a way that seems right to a man, but its en is the way of death.”
Got Questions? Bible Questions Answered What Should We Learn from the Tribe of Dan?

Jesus taught that the way to God was specific when He said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except by Me” (John 14:6). John 3:36 teaches that “He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.” To learn from the mistakes of Dan would be to worship the God of the Bible alone and live for Him by faith

5 Reasons Millennials Stay Connected to Church Barna Study (2013)
Study Findings: This research included a series of national public opinion surveys conducted by Barna Group to find the most effective ways to keep millennials connected to the church. The listed the following strategies:
1. Develop meaningful relationships with millennials 2. Teach millennials to study and discern what’s happening in the culture 3. Help millennials discover their own mission in the world, rather than ask them to wait their turn 4. Teach millennials a more potent theology of vocation, or calling. 5. Help millennials develop a lasting faith by facilitating a deeper sense of intimacy with God
