Introduction

Isaiah
Isaiah 9:6 NIV84
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
In one verse, the Prophet Isaiah gives us the humanity of Christ, the deity of Christ, and four distinguishing characteristics of Him being Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father and Prince of Peace.
The Child that is born and the Son that is given shall have the wonder of a counselor. He will have all wisdom because He is Mighty God. As Mighty God, He is good, He is generous, and He is gracious.
A third characteristic is used by Isaiah proclaiming that this Child that is born and this Son that is given will also be called Everlasting Father.
How is that possible that a Child and a Son could be called a Father?
It is a phenomenon that One who is an infant could be at the same time be called infinite, the One that the Man of Sorrows be Mighty God; and the One who is in the Divine Trinity as Son could nevertheless could be called Everlasting Father.
The mystery of our Lord is that He has come to us and He is everything He was prophesied to be. Even the things He has said about Himself are in light of the prophecies.
We can only know Him as He reveals Himself to us. He is not discovered by research or reason. Jesus talked to Peter about how one comes to know Christ when He said:
Matthew 16:17 NIV84
Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven.
Matthew
Paul recognized this also when he said in
Galatians 1:15–16 NIV84
But when God, who set me apart from birth and called me by his grace, was pleased to reveal his Son in me so that I might preach him among the Gentiles, I did not consult any man,
Galatians 1:16 NIV84
to reveal his Son in me so that I might preach him among the Gentiles, I did not consult any man,
Jesus came into this world to reveal Himself to us. Isaiah shows us just how He was going to do so. We are created so that we can know and have a relationship with this Child that is born and this Son that is given.
Philippians 3:10 NIV84
I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death,
2 Peter 3:18 NIV84
But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen.
2 Tim
2 Timothy 3:15 NIV84
and how from infancy you have known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.
To know Him is life eternal and to be taught Him is to be wiser for salvation.
So let’s break it down and see what this means for us today.
Let’s look at this characteristic by examining the words apart then examining together.
First, look at Everlasting.

Everlasting

The word EVERLASTING is strategically placed in this passage. In fact, you can find it or words that mean the same thing throughout the Bible.
Jesus Christ is EVERLASTING.
Psalm
Psalm 45:6 NIV84
Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever; a scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom.
Hebrews
Hebrews 1:8 NIV84
But about the Son he says, “Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever, and righteousness will be the scepter of your kingdom.
This calls for great rejoicing!
Hebrews 13:8 NIV84
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.
Revelation 1:4 NIV84
John, To the seven churches in the province of Asia: Grace and peace to you from him who is, and who was, and who is to come, and from the seven spirits before his throne,
Revelation 1:4
The word EVERLASTING means that Jesus is of past time.
Revelation 1:14 NIV84
His head and hair were white like wool, as white as snow, and his eyes were like blazing fire.
The word EVERLASTING means that Jesus is of future time.
The word EVERLASTING means that Jesus is of continuous existence.
The word EVERLASTING means that Jesus is eternal.
Psalm
Psalm 21:4–6 NIV84
He asked you for life, and you gave it to him— length of days, for ever and ever. Through the victories you gave, his glory is great; you have bestowed on him splendor and majesty. Surely you have granted him eternal blessings and made him glad with the joy of your presence.
Psalm 61:6–7 NIV84
Increase the days of the king’s life, his years for many generations. May he be enthroned in God’s presence forever; appoint your love and faithfulness to protect him.
Psalm
Psalm 72:
Psalm 72:5 NIV84
He will endure as long as the sun, as long as the moon, through all generations.
Psalm 72:17 NIV84
May his name endure forever; may it continue as long as the sun. All nations will be blessed through him, and they will call him blessed.
Jesus is EVERLASTING. Need more proof from God’s Word?
Hebrews 1:10 NIV84
He also says, “In the beginning, O Lord, you laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands.
This is a quote from .
Psalm 102:25 NIV84
In the beginning you laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands.
Jesus declared that His time in the world’s eyes will be limited, but in the eyes of the believer we will live.
John 14:19 NIV84
Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live.
Jesus is EVERLASTING.
Jesus has gone through the heavens.
Hebrews 4:14 NIV84
Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess.
Because Jesus is everlasting, we can know He can redeem us and save us completely.
Hebrews 7:25 NIV84
Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.
Jesus is EVERLASTING. This means that He will never cease to exist.
Jesus always was, Jesus always is and Jesus will always will be.
He is not just a fable or a made up story. He is.
John 1:1–4 NIV84
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of men.
John 1:1
Jesus is EVERLASTING in all His attributes, in all that He is, and in all His might, power, willingness to bless, comfort, guard and crown His chosen people.
Isaiah in His wisdom could have painted a glorious picture by just saying this Child that is given and this Son that is born is EVERLASTING. But, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, Isaiah states He is the EVERLASTING FATHER.
Let’s get more understanding about what this means.

Father

Among the Jews, the word Father means originator or source.
So what then would Jesus be the Father of?
We have already seen that Jesus was the Father of Eternity.
Jesus is the Author of Everlasting Life.
John 10:30 NIV84
I and the Father are one.”
Jesus is the Father of the world to come.
Jesus is the Father of the Gospel.
Hebrews 2:5 NIV84
It is not to angels that he has subjected the world to come, about which we are speaking.
Jesus is the Father of redemption. Mankind came into being through Adam. Adam was the father of all living. He was the representative for us in how obedience should have been blessed, but he disobeyed and that disobedience made us all sinners.
1 Corinthians 15:45 NIV84
So it is written: “The first man Adam became a living being”; the last Adam, a life-giving spirit.
1 Corinthians 15:
Because Jesus is our Father of redemption, we are given life once and for all.
Jesus is also Father as a result of being a wonder of a counselor and Mighty God. My father was more to me than just my life giver. He taught me many things that continue to be of great counsel in my life. Jesus gives us wisdom because He is Mighty God.
As Father, Jesus is King and Protector of His people.
Isaiah 22:21 NIV84
I will clothe him with your robe and fasten your sash around him and hand your authority over to him. He will be a father to those who live in Jerusalem and to the house of Judah.
Luke 1:32–33 NIV84
He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end.”
Isaiah 22:
Job 29:16 NIV84
I was a father to the needy; I took up the case of the stranger.
Luke 1
Matthew 27:11 NIV84
Meanwhile Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?” “Yes, it is as you say,” Jesus replied.
Acts 17:7 NIV84
and Jason has welcomed them into his house. They are all defying Caesar’s decrees, saying that there is another king, one called Jesus.”
Acts 17:11
Matthew 2
This indicates that Jesus has kingly garments because He is King. He has authority and in doing so He will protect His people. It denotes the relationship to His people.
Earthly kings leave their people after a short reign. Jesus will reign over and bless them forever.
Jesus being Everlasting would have been enough. Jesus being Father would have been enough. But God in His infinite wisdom chose to call Him Everlasting Father.
John 10:30 NIV84
I and the Father are one.”
Jesus
John 10
John 14:9 NIV84
Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?

How can the Child that is born and the Son that is given be The Everlasting Father?
Isaiah 7:14 NIV84
Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.

John 14:9 NIV84
Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?
Jesus tells Philip in that “anyone who has seen Him has seen the Father.”
The Messiah being the second person of the Trinity is in essence God. He has all attributes of God including being eternal.
Everlasting Father is also used to describe the Messiah’s relationship to time and not His relationship to the other members of the Trinity.
Everlasting Father is just as God is called the Ancient of Days in .
Daniel 7:9 NIV84
“As I looked, “thrones were set in place, and the Ancient of Days took his seat. His clothing was as white as snow; the hair of his head was white like wool. His throne was flaming with fire, and its wheels were all ablaze.

The Messiah will be a Fatherly Ruler.
Isaiah most likely had in mind the promise to David about the foreverness of the kingdom coming through David’s line.
2 Samuel 7
2 Samuel 7:16 NIV84
Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me; your throne will be established forever.’ ”
The Messiah, a descendant of David, will fulfill this promise for which the nations have been waiting.
Psalm 21:4–6 NIV84
He asked you for life, and you gave it to him— length of days, for ever and ever. Through the victories you gave, his glory is great; you have bestowed on him splendor and majesty. Surely you have granted him eternal blessings and made him glad with the joy of your presence.

as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.
Psalm
Romans 4:7 NIV84

If He shall be called Everlasting Father, then I want to spend all the time with Him I can. I want to bask in His glory. I want to get His approval. The Bible tells me that because He is my Everlasting Father, that He wants to spend time with me as well.
Revelation 2:20 NIV84
Nevertheless, I have this against you: You tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess. By her teaching she misleads my servants into sexual immorality and the eating of food sacrificed to idols.
Revelation 3:20 NIV84
Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me.
