9. God shows us the importance of relying on the Holy Spirit. – "But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you."
 – "The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. And just as God raised Christ Jesus from the dead, he will give life to your mortal bodies by this same Spirit living within you. Therefore, dear brothers and sisters, you have no obligation to do what your sinful nature urges you to do. For if you live by its dictates, you will die. But if through the power of the Spirit you put to death the deeds of your sinful nature, you will live. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God."
 – "And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don't know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words. And the Father who knows all hearts knows what the Spirit is saying, for the Spirit pleads for us believers in harmony with God's own will."
 – "Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit. So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace."

13. By My Spirit: Why oil is a good representation of the Holy Spirit:
c. By My Spirit: Why oil is a good representation of the Holy Spirit:
• Oil lubricates when used for that purpose—there is little friction and wear among those who are lubricated by the Spirit of God
• Oil heals and was used as a medicinal treatment in Biblical times ()—the Spirit of God brings healing and restoration
• Oil lights when it is burned in a lamp—where the Spirit of God is there is light
• Oil warms when it is used as fuel for a flame—where the Spirit of God is there is warmth and comfort
• Oil invigorates when used to massage—the Holy Spirit invigorates us for His service
• Oil adorns when applied as a perfume—the Holy Spirit adorns us and makes us more pleasant to be around
• Oil polishes when used to shine metal—the Holy Spirit wipes away our grime and smoothes out our rough edges
d. Who are you, O great mountain? Before Zerubbabel you shall become a plain! The work of rebuilding the temple was so massive it seemed like a great mountain. Here God promises that by His Spirit, that great mountain will be leveled into a plain.

14. Small Beginnings THE KINGDOM STARTS SMALL
It would have been a surprise for Jesus’ listeners to hear him compare the Kingdom to something as small as mustard seed and yeast. They would have expected something huge and powerful, – maybe an oak tree, or a mountain, or a mighty river, or thunder and lightning!
Many expected the messiah to bring the kingdom in a blaze of glory – fanfares and trumpets, and victory over the oppressive force of the Romans, and anyone else that stood in the way. God had different ideas and he sent Jesus to earth as a saviour that no-one expected.
Let’s have a quick look at Jesus’ background because his life sets the pattern for the growth of the kingdom:
– Jesus was born in the tiny town of Bethlehem in poverty.
– He was raised in Galilee, and no one believed that a man of God could come from there, .
– He was raised in Nazareth. The inhabitants of that city were considered to be wicked and worldly by the Jews.
– He had no family connections. He had no money. He had no support from the religious leaders of the day.
– Jesus was considered to be a nobody from nowhere, who would amount to nothing!
– His parentage was questioned, by His enemies.
– His followers were the ordinary people of society
– His Own people rejected Him.
– He was despised and rejected by men.
– The Romans eventually nailed Him to a cross and buried Him in a tomb.
– His followers preached His resurrection, but most people ignored their message and considered them fools for following a dead man.
– Even the Lord’s message was hard to swallow. For some it still is because it goes against our human nature .Jesus said to get to give away what you have. He told people to love their enemies. He counselled men to turn the other cheek. He spoke of walking the second mile. Jesus arrived on earth in very insignificant and ordinary circumstances. He was the mustard seed that God “planted” on earth, and it was from this humble beginning that the Kingdom of God was founded. He completely shattered the expectation of what the messiah was going to be.
God introduced his Kingdom to the world in the smallest, most humble manner imaginable! But that is how he operates. He uses the small, humble, vulnerable and weak to achieve things for his glory.
We only have to look at a few Bible characters to see how this is true…
MOSES was called by God out of obscurity to challenge Pharaoh and secure release of the Israelites from oppression. Moses himself said “who am I? I am slow of speech. Send someone else!”
GIDEON was from the smallest family in the smallest tribe of Israel, yet God raised him up to be a great military leader
JOSEPH was despised by his brothers and sold into slavery to the Egyptians. God rescued him from prison and lead to him a position as a senior official in Government. – DAVID was the youngest of 8 sons. He was given the job of shepherd boy that no-one else wanted left out in the fields tending sheep. God turned him to a giant killing King! God uses the small and insignificant Much like the society of Jesus’ time, our world celebrates the biggest, the best, the rich powerful and successful. You may feel insignificant and small compared to the rest of the world and it can seem like a daunting task to step out into the world and spread the Gospel.

Today we will look at the character of Zerubbabel who was the grandson of Jehoiachin, the captive king of Judah. To set our story in context Zerubbabel was born while in captivity and was the head of the tribe of Judah during the first return from Babylonian exile.
The Jews had been taken into exile in Babylon by King Nebuchadnezzar because of their disobedience to God. But they still have hope because the prophet Jeremiah had prophesied that they would be there seventy years. (Ref. ). Eventually Cyrus King of Persia overthrew the Babylonian empire. God then moved Cyrus to issue a decree that the Jewish exiles were free to return to their ancestral home, and he would help them rebuild the Temple. I will help them with supplies.” King Cyrus also sent all the Temple utensils that had been stolen back with the exiles.
The Jews had been taken into exile in Babylon by King Nebuchadnezzar because of their disobedience to God. But they still have hope because Jeremiah had prophesied that they would be there seventy years. This is what the Lord says: “Babylon will be powerful for 70 years. After that time, I will come to you people who are living in Babylon. I will keep my good promise to bring you back to Jerusalem. Eventually Cyrus of Persia overthrew the Babylonian empire. God then moved Cyrus to issue a decree that the Jewish exiles were free to return to their ancestral home, and he would help them rebuild the Temple. I will help them with supplies.” Cyrus also sent all the Temple utensils that had been stolen back with the exiles.
Why was rebuilding the temple so important? It was to be the center of worship and symbol of God’s renewed blessings for the restored people of God.

Zerubbabel and Jeshua, the high priest, led the first group of captives back to Jerusalem. They first rebuilt the altar of the Temple and began sacrifices. After that they began to build the foundations of the new Temple. And now a story from the word of God.

Text : When the enemies of Judah and Benjamin heard that the exiles were building a temple for the Lord, the God of Israel, 2 they came to Zerubbabel and to the heads of the families and said, “Let us help you build because, like you, we seek your God and have been sacrificing to him since the time of Esarhaddon king of Assyria, who brought us here.”

3 But Zerubbabel, Jeshua and the rest of the heads of the families of Israel answered, “You have no part with us in building a temple to our God. We alone will build it for the Lord, the God of Israel, as King Cyrus, the king of Persia, commanded us.”
3 But Zerubbabel, Jeshua and the rest of the heads of the families of Israel answered, “You have no part with us in building a temple to our God. We alone will build it for the Lord, the God of Israel, as King Cyrus, the king of Persia, commanded us.”
4 Then the peoples around them set out to discourage the people of Judah and make them afraid to go on building. 5 They hired counselors to work against them and frustrate their plans during the entire reign of Cyrus king of Persia and down to the reign of Darius king of Persia. This time delay of 17 years left the leaders and the people very discouraged. The Lord saw their discouragement and intervened by giving the prophet Zechariah a vison and also sending an angel to tell him what the vision meant.

Text : Then the angel who had been talking with me (The Prophet Zechariah) returned and woke me, as though I had been asleep. 2 “What do you see now?” he asked. I answered, “I see a solid gold lampstand with a bowl of oil on top of it. Around the bowl are seven lamps, each having seven spouts with wicks. 3 And I see two olive trees, one on each side of the bowl.” 4 Then I asked the angel, “What are these, my lord? What do they mean?” 5 “Don’t you know?” the angel asked. “No, my lord,” I replied.

6 Then he said to me, “This is what the Lord says to Zerubbabel: It is not by force nor by strength, but by my Spirit, says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. 7 Nothing, not even a mighty mountain, will stand in Zerubbabel’s way; it will become a level plain before him! And when Zerubbabel sets the final stone of the Temple in place, the people will shout: ‘May God bless it! May God bless it!’ ”

8 Then another message came to me from the Lord: 9 “Zerubbabel is the one who laid the foundation of this Temple, and he will complete it. Then you will know that the Lord of Heaven’s Armies has sent me. 10 Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin, to see the plumb line in Zerubbabel’s hand.” (The seven lamps represent the eyes of the Lord that search all around the world.) A story from God’s word.

A story from God’s word.
As we begin, I want to go back to which introduces our story. As Zerubbabel and the returning exiles return to Jerusalem, they are excited to begin to rebuild the temple. I don’t believe they realized at the time the spiritual battle that they were entering into as they begin to rebuild God’s Holy Temple. The enemies of Judah who lived in the land heard the exiles were going to rebuild the temple and offered to help. You might ask why would these enemies of Judah want to help rebuild the temple? A better question might be what was satan up to?

says, “ And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.” Their enemies appear to want to help, but is that their real motive? Also, we read in , “Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. 9 Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings.” As we walk along our spiritual journey we begin to realize we are in a spiritual battle and the enemy is always looking to deceive us to keep us away from God. What is the objective of satan in our story? To keep the people from building the Temple where worship will take place, to oppose any way he could to hinder their relationship with God.

Also, we read in Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.
As we walk along our spiritual journey, we begin to realize we are in a spiritual battle and the enemy is always looking to deceive us to keep us away from God. For most of life I didn’t think I was on a spiritual battlefield. What is the objective of satan in our story? To keep the people from building the Temple where worship will take place, to oppose any way he could to hinder their relationship with God.
It interesting to look at the response that Zerubbabel and the leaders gave to this offer of help. They tell them you will have no part in building the temple and that job is for that is up to the Jewish people. How were they able discern the situation? If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. What did the people need? They needed wisdom, but the enemy did not give up. 4 Then the peoples around them set out to discourage the people of Judah and make them afraid to go on building. 5 They hired counselors to work against them and frustrate their plans during the entire reign of Cyrus king of Persia and down to the reign of Darius king of Persia.

First, they offer to help and after they have been confronted with Godly wisdom, they change their tactic to discouragement, making them afraid to rebuild, and working behind the scenes to frustrate their plans. Spiritual opposition resulted in opposition in the natural to rebuilding the Temple that went on for 17 years leaving the people greatly discouraged.
In our own lives the enemy will use deception, create opposition in the background, and discourage you along your spiritual journey so you can’t fulfill God’s plan for your life. The enemy wants you to give up, to quit, and grow cold in your relationship with God. There is a spiritual battle to follow the Lord’s plan, but in the midst of this battle, God is with us. says, “Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.” Jesus tells us in , “I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world."

Spiritual opposition manifested in actual opposition resulting in a 17-year delay in the construction of the temple leaving the people greatly discouraged.
Question: Do you sense you are in a spiritual battle today? How can other believers come around you to encourage, pray for and lift you up? If you are like me this is the hard part; asking for help. That’s we need to just ask the Lord; help me Lord to humble myself and ask someone to help me.

As we leave the first part of the story the people are discouraged and completing the temple may have seemed beyond them. The good news is the Lord uses this time of delay to make it obvious that they need his help. He has not forgotten about his people and in his perfect timing intervenes giving the prophet Zechariah a vision. Without the Lord’s continuous intervention, we cannot fulfill the Lord’s plan for our life. I don’t think a day goes by when the Lord is not intervening in our life multiple times. Question: How has the Lord intervened in your life? This is a great exercise to begin to realize how active the Lord is in our everyday life.

Then the angel who had been talking with me (The Prophet Zechariah) returned and woke me, as though I had been asleep.

As we unpack this vision, we see this golden lampstand with a bowl of oil on top of it and this bowl of oil feeds the seven lamps that are around it. On either side are two olive trees one on each side that produce the olive oil. In the Bible oil is often symbolic of the Holy Spirit. Why is oil a good representation of the Holy Spirit?
• Oil heals and was used as a medicinal treatment in Biblical times ()—the Spirit of God brings healing and restoration

• Oil polishes when used to shine metal—the Holy Spirit wipes away our grime and smoothes out our rough edges
As we think of these many characteristics of the Holy Spirit, we begin to see how important the Holy Spirit is in our life. Zerubbabel will need to rely on the Holy Spirit not his own strength and ability to complete the temple. Relying and trusting the Holy Spirit is the key to fulfill God’s plan for my life. By relying on the Holy Spirit and being encouraged by the prophet Zechariah the temple is completed in four years after a seventeen-year delay.

Question: Where in your life is the Lord showing you that you need to rely more on His Holy Spirit?
As we come to the last part of the story another message comes to Zechariah to give to Zerubbabel. 10 Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin, to see the plumb line in Zerubbabel’s hand.”

While the world may sneer at small beginnings God does not because he knows what best for us along our journey. While we may want something bigger and grander beginnings the Lord knows that large beginnings are almost always destructive because we don’t have the spiritual maturity to handle that magnitude of success.

Small beginnings give the Lord time to help us grow spiritually so we can humbly fulfill God’s plan for our life. God uses the small, weak, and unnoticed to achieve great things for his Kingdom. God uses people like you and me. Question: How has the Lord used small beginnings in your life to help you mature spiritually?

As we close, I want you to remember this week that our God is a God of intervention and there was no greater intervention in the history of mankind than God sending his Son Jesus into the world. That night over 2000 years ago when Mary give birth to baby Jesus there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. To God be the glory! Amen.
As we close, I want you to remember this week that our God is a God of intervention. 4 But when the right time came, God sent his Son, born of a woman, subject to the law. 5 God sent him to buy freedom for us who were slaves to the law, so that he could adopt us as his very own children. 6 And because we are his children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, prompting us to call out, “Abba, Father.” 7 Now you are no longer a slave but God’s own child. And since you are his child, God has made you his heir.
