Spiritual Markers

John had a terrible memory! Seminar. Rose.
We need to set down spiritual markers
: the Israelites are crossing the Jordan into the promised land, God had one man from each tribe to grab a stone from the middle of the Jordan and place it where they camped for the night as a reminder of what God did for them.
Spiritual Markers remind of what God has done for us. It is stronghold and a retreat when trouble comes.
And trouble will come!
Jesus told his disciples in that if they didn’t have a sword to sell their cloak and buy one.
Hard time fall on us all, but the measure of your faith is how you respond to that trouble.
Spiritual markers give us the last point of reference for what God’s done in your life. They are like an anchor.
Rock climbers example.
Joseph could look back at what God had done and continue to have faith in God’s promises.
Genesis 40:1–4 NASB95
1 Then it came about after these things, the cupbearer and the baker for the king of Egypt offended their lord, the king of Egypt. 2 Pharaoh was furious with his two officials, the chief cupbearer and the chief baker. 3 So he put them in confinement in the house of the captain of the bodyguard, in the jail, the same place where Joseph was imprisoned. 4 The captain of the bodyguard put Joseph in charge of them, and he took care of them; and they were in confinement for some time.
They had a dream the same night and Joseph saw that they were upset. Joseph asked what was wrong.
Genesis 40:8 NASB95
8 Then they said to him, “We have had a dream and there is no one to interpret it.” Then Joseph said to them, “Do not interpretations belong to God? Tell it to me, please.”
Cupbearer: Vine with three branches: Budding, Blossoms come out and ripe grapes were produced. I squeezed the grapes into Pharaoh’s cub and gave it to him.
Joseph:
Genesis 40:14 NASB95
14 “Only keep me in mind when it goes well with you, and please do me a kindness by mentioning me to Pharaoh and get me out of this house.
G
Baker:3 baskets of white bread, top of the basket all sorts of baked food and the birds were eating them out of the basked on my head.
Joseph: in 3 days Pharaoh will hang you and the birds will eat the flesh off of you.
Pharaoh had a birthday party. Restored the cupbearer and hanged the Baker.
Genesis 40:23 NASB95
23 Yet the chief cupbearer did not remember Joseph, but forgot him.

Pharaoh’s dream
Genesis 41:1 NASB95
1 Now it happened at the end of two full years that Pharaoh had a dream, and behold, he was standing by the Nile.
Genesis 41:
7 Fat cows are eaten by 7 sickly cows
Two years later Pharoah had a dream
7 ears plump ears of corn are swallowed up by 7 sickly ears of corn.
No one can interpret the dream
The cupbearer speaks up.
Are we not like the cupbearer sometimes?
When things are bad, we are all ready to listen to God, but when things are good, we are like, I got it from here.
Genesis 41:14 NASB95
14 Then Pharaoh sent and called for Joseph, and they hurriedly brought him out of the dungeon; and when he had shaved himself and changed his clothes, he came to Pharaoh.
Dress for the job you want, not the job you have.

Genesis 41:16 NASB95
16 Joseph then answered Pharaoh, saying, “It is not in me; God will give Pharaoh a favorable answer.”

25 Now Joseph said to Pharaoh, “Pharaoh’s dreams are one and the same; God has told to Pharaoh what He is about to do.
Joseph tells Pharaoh the interpretation
Genesis 41:
Genesis 41:32 NASB95
32 “Now as for the repeating of the dream to Pharaoh twice, it means that the matter is determined by God, and God will quickly bring it about.
Again giving glory to God.
Joseph lays out the plan to get through the famine.
Genesis 41:33–37 NASB95
33 “Now let Pharaoh look for a man discerning and wise, and set him over the land of Egypt. 34 “Let Pharaoh take action to appoint overseers in charge of the land, and let him exact a fifth of the produce of the land of Egypt in the seven years of abundance. 35 “Then let them gather all the food of these good years that are coming, and store up the grain for food in the cities under Pharaoh’s authority, and let them guard it. 36 “Let the food become as a reserve for the land for the seven years of famine which will occur in the land of Egypt, so that the land will not perish during the famine.” 37 Now the proposal seemed good to Pharaoh and to all his servants.
Genesis 41:33 NASB95
33 “Now let Pharaoh look for a man discerning and wise, and set him over the land of Egypt.
Genesis
Genesis 41:33-
Pharaoh and his servants agree on the plan.
Genesis 41:38–39 NASB95
38 Then Pharaoh said to his servants, “Can we find a man like this, in whom is a divine spirit?” 39 So Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Since God has informed you of all this, there is no one so discerning and wise as you are.
Genesis 41:38
Pharaoh puts him in charge of all of Egypt.
Signet ring, nice clothes, Gold necklace Chariot a new name and a wife.

Luke 16:9 NASB95
9 “And I say to you, make friends for yourselves by means of the wealth of unrighteousness, so that when it fails, they will receive you into the eternal dwellings.
Luke
Luke 16:
I said earlier: Hard time fall on us all, but the measure of your faith is how you respond to that trouble.
What Spiritual Markers have you set?
When upon life's billows you are tempest tossed, When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost, Count your many blessings name them one by one, And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.
