A lady had a circle of friends for whom she really wanted to buy Christmas presents. Time slipped away and it was so busy at work for her she just wasn’t able to get to the store to purchase those gifts. Time was running out. So not too many days before Christmas she decided to give up on the gift idea and just buy everybody the same beautiful Christmas card. She went to the local gift store and hurriedly went through the now picked over stack of cards and found a box of fifty, just exactly what she wanted. She didn’t take time to read the message, she just noticed a beautiful cover on it and there was gold around it and a floral appearance on the front of the card and she thought, That’s perfect. So she signed all of them, “With all my love.”

As New Year’s came and she had time to go back to two or three cards she didn’t send from that stack, she was shocked to read the message inside. It said, in a little rhyme, “This Christmas card is just to say, a little gift is on its way.”

In our passage today do not approach it too quickly in order that you fail to realize the “GIFT” that is presented on its way...
Luke 2:21–38 NASB95
And when eight days had passed, before His circumcision, His name was then called Jesus, the name given by the angel before He was conceived in the womb. And when the days for their purification according to the law of Moses were completed, they brought Him up to Jerusalem to present Him to the Lord (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, “Every firstborn male that opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord”), and to offer a sacrifice according to what was said in the Law of the Lord, “A pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons.” And there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; and this man was righteous and devout, looking for the consolation of Israel; and the Holy Spirit was upon him. And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. And he came in the Spirit into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to carry out for Him the custom of the Law, then he took Him into his arms, and blessed God, and said, “Now Lord, You are releasing Your bond-servant to depart in peace, According to Your word; For my eyes have seen Your salvation, Which You have prepared in the presence of all peoples, A Light of revelation to the Gentiles, And the glory of Your people Israel.” And His father and mother were amazed at the things which were being said about Him. And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary His mother, “Behold, this Child is appointed for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and for a sign to be opposed— and a sword will pierce even your own soul—to the end that thoughts from many hearts may be revealed.” And there was a prophetess, Anna the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was advanced in years and had lived with her husband seven years after her marriage, and then as a widow to the age of eighty-four. She never left the temple, serving night and day with fastings and prayers. At that very moment she came up and began giving thanks to God, and continued to speak of Him to all those who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem.
As we consider our passage today Paul’s words in are so pertinent to understand and grasp!

In our passage today do not approach it too quickly in order that you fail to realize the “GIFT” that is on its way...
We are entering into a season and a time of gift giving, there is a great deal of excitement centered around the Christmas narrative for sure!
Galatians 4:4–5 NASB95
But when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the Law, so that He might redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive the adoption as sons.

JESUS… Born Under Law

Circumcision 8th Day
Going to the temple for sacrifice
Mary’s Days of Purification (40) in total
Sacrifice of atonement (God’s provision for those with less)
Notice that Luke’s readers, specifically Theophilus, would have known of the birth of Jesus, so why these details?
Why is it important for us to know and understand the things which were fulfilled according to the law?
First this was God’s Law found in Leveticus
God’s law was His standard knowing the only one who could meet it would be Himself
REMEMBER… Luke is writing this so we know with certainty… what we have been taught.
Luke verified these events
We know this to be true without making assumptions
Luke is also setting the stage to present Jesus’ “GIFT” of salvation!
Luke here also makes a great emphasis on the naming of Jesus...
Matthew emphasizes Emanuel= God with us
John emphasizes Him as the Word= logos made flesh
Luke emphasizes Jesus= (The name “Jesus” is the equivalent of Yeshua‘/Yehoshua‘ (Joshua) in Hebrew, meaning “Yahweh saves” or “the Lord saves.”)

Another year of ministry ends,

Relieving so many of guilt and shame;

A sinner believes—a new life begins,

Because in his heart, he whispers that Name.

Another Christmas season dawns

Bringing its message, ever the same:

A mother sighs, a Baby yawns,

And in His heart, He whispers your name.

Oh the precious name of Jesus!

JESUS… Made Known to Many

JESUS… Made Known to Many

Made Known By Faithful...
Do you remember the first time you were told about Jesus? Do you recall your amazement, excitement, you joy?
Think up to this point how Israel has been made known the coming of their Messiah!!!!
Prophecy of the OT
Zacharias words declared at the birth of his son John for all to hear in the hill country
Imagine the priest that heard Zacharias share of what the angel had told him
People in Nazareth as Mary and Joseph share the baby is born of the Holy Spirit!
The people in Bethlehem as the shepherds shared with them all about Jesus and the angels
Now in Jerusalem, in the temple… Simeon told he would not die before seeing the Christ (Messiah)
Anna speaking of Jesus to ALL who were looking to the redemption!
Soon… even Herod will know and his courtroom along with the scribes!
MANY are made aware of the coming of the Messiah! of their Messiah…
This is not a sweet little manger with only a few made aware...
God announced in powerful and magnificent ways the coming of His Son
We are so susceptible to the amazing, the excitement, the wonder
It gets our attention then it dwindles off
We follow God when something miraculous occurs, but in the day to day we slowly slip away
Consider the faithful people surrounding Luke’s Christmas Narrative...
The older couple Zacharias and Elizabeth righteous in God’s sight
Mary who found favor in the eyes of the Lord
Lowly shepherds faithfully watching their sheep
Simeon a righteous and devout man
Anna older in years faithfully serving the Lord
Nothing spectacular about them other than their faithfulness… God uses this faithful remnant who:
Listen to and follow what He says and ask
Mary and Joseph are sensitive to and obedient to God’s law
These individuals were faithful day to day
They were looking, waiting for the promises of God
And when God worked they were faithful to declare Him and give Him glory!

JESUS… Forgotten?

How will you respond?
Remember Luke is setting the stage here for his readers… soon he will jump 30 years ahead.
Israel was made aware, but life goes on
Old news give me something fresh, amazing, we want more signs and wonders!
As Luke shares Simeon’s prophecy of the baby boy Jesus he is showing what the hearts will be like…
Luke 2:29–32 NASB95
“Now Lord, You are releasing Your bond-servant to depart in peace, According to Your word; For my eyes have seen Your salvation, Which You have prepared in the presence of all peoples, A Light of revelation to the Gentiles, And the glory of Your people Israel.”
Through Jesus the Christ would come salvation...
God prepared this for All peoples (not hidden!)
This is new revelation for gentiles
Israel already had God’s revelation/scriptures He was their Messiah!
Looking back Mary for sure would have understood the words Simeon would say to her next, but surely would have pondered them at the time they were spoken
Luke 2:34–35 NASB95
And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary His mother, “Behold, this Child is appointed for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and for a sign to be opposed— and a sword will pierce even your own soul—to the end that thoughts from many hearts may be revealed.”
Many would follow Him many would not
At Calvary Mary’s soul would be pierced as well… her son and her Savior
Hearts would be revealed, Jesus the Son of God could come and judge the intents of the hearts!
Has your heart grown callused to the message of Jesus coming?
As we are reminded with certainty that this baby Jesus is the Son of God, the salvation of the world
Will you grow dull to the message or be found faithful to declare this season and every day that follows the precious name of Jesus!!!
says this about Jesus…BECAUSE of the “GIFT” He was soon to give at Calvary, and the power He would have three days later rising up from the grave!
Philippians 2:9–11 NASB95
For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
