Jesus Came

- 14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth
Fully God, fully man, partially understood
We don’t understand it fully, its a mystery
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version. (2016). (). Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles.
- Great indeed, we confess, is the mystery of godliness: He was manifested in the flesh, indicated by the Spirit, seen by angels, proclaimed among the nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory.
He was manifested in the flesh, indicated by the Spirit, seen by angels, proclaimed among the nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory.
We know it is true, it is the answer to “how did God save us through Jesus?”
vindicated by the Spirit, seen by angels, proclaimed among the nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory.
— Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery. 16 For surely it is not angels that he helps, but he helps the offspring of Abraham. 17 Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.

“He was God and man in one person so that God and man could be made happy together again”- Whitfield
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version. (2016). (). Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles.

Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery. 16 For surely it is not angels that he helps, but he helps the offspring of Abraham. 17 Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. 18 For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.

Virgin Birth-
proclaimed among the nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory.
The Holy Spirit was the way in which Jesus was conceived and that is what ensured holiness.
believed on in the world, taken up in glory.

Jesus Died

taken up in glory.
We often think of Jesus on the cross academically. He died, sure. Like plants die or dogs die or the sun sets. We think about the death of Jesus as a fact to be learned about like math. In a way, this is ok. It is history and so the factual truth of it is great.
But, we overlook some things when we consider Christ’s death.
Christ’s death was prophesied
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version. (2016). (). Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles.
The prophets
Jesus Himself — From that time Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised.
Yet he himself bore our sicknesses,
Christ’s death was voluntary
, , - 11 I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life that I may take it up again. 18 No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This charge I have received from my Father.”
His death was painful
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version. (2016). (). Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles.
Physically— Beaten, whipped, kicked, slapped, bleeding, thorns, spear, nails, suffocating
and he carried our pains;
Emotionally— those who he loves are killing him. Hurting him. Abusing Him.
Spiritually— The most joy (fellowship with God) is gone. He gives up true joy for your darkness. Your death. Your hatred. Your evil. Your awful rebellion.
Literally, it was dark for 3 hours (matt 27:45). I think this was because God removed himself even from the light.
His death was a payment to free us
We owed an eternity worth of payment to God: Jesus paid it.
- you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God, 10 and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come.
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version. (2016). (). Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles.
We were in slavery to sin and death and needed to be bought: Jesus paid it.
- Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery.
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version. (2016). (). Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles.
We were trapped in uselessness ending with a price (death) : Jesus paid it.
1 peter 1:18-19 knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ,
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version. (2016). (). Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles.
We were stuck under rules and consequences for breaking them: Jesus paid it.
We were stuck under rules and consequences for breaking them: Jesus paid it.
But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version. (2016). (). Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles.
We were enslaved to Satan because of the sin we chose to in-debt : Jesus paid it.
- 13 He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son,
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version. (2016). (). Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles.
but we in turn regarded him stricken,
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version. (2016). (). Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles.
His death is not a light thing.
struck down by God, and afflicted.
The God of the universe became so weak and small and limited--- for you and me.
5 But he was pierced because of our rebellion,
He allowed his own creation to hurt him--- for you and me.
crushed because of our iniquities;
He took the blame, took the pain, took the cost and the black marks of all evil— for you and me.
punishment for our peace was on him,
This is something that is a struggle to comprehend, so don’t play around with it.
and we are healed by his wounds.
This is serious. Be serious. It’s real. It matters.
6 We all went astray like sheep;
He did all of this for us and didn’t deserve a second of it. He died for us.
we all have turned to our own way;
His death was not the end though.
and the LORD has punished him

Jesus Came Back to Life

for the iniquity of us all.
He didn’t stay dead or else you and I would not be here.
There is no good news if Jesus didn’t come back to life. We need the full truth!
- And if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version. (2016). (). Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles.
For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures
If Jesus didn’t come back from the dead then there is NO GOOD NEWS.
Why does this matter? What did Jesus coming back from the dead really do?
It shows us the real power in the universe: God.
Christian Standard Bible. (2017). (). Nashville, TN: Holman Bible Publishers.
Nothing can come against Him: satan, death, evil, sin, darkness, pain, fear, --- anything and everything showed up to kill Jesus and all it did was give God an opportunity to save mankind.
— 17 When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. But he laid his right hand on me, saying, “Fear not, I am the first and the last, 18 and the living one. I died, and behold I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of Death and Hades.
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version. (2016). (). Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles.
Freed us from the old covenant by fulfilling its requirements for ever
No more guilt. No more
New covenant established— We live for him now!
We can’t live for someone who is dead. We have a king to live for now, though!
— Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, 21 far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. 22 And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, 23 which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version. (2016). (). Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles.
The winning side is easy to see
The resurrection of Jesus shows His power over sin and through salvation he offers that power to work in us (Holy Spirit), guaranteeing and eventual victory over all sin. ------ We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version. (2016). (). Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles.
ASSURANCE: If we don’t see Jesus in this life, we will come back to life when he comes back.
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version. (2016). (). Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles.
And God raised the Lord and will also raise us up by his power.
5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. (We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. 7 For one who has died has been set free from sin. 8 Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. 9 We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. 10 For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. 11 So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. )
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version. (2016). (). Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles.
God became man. Jesus died for us. He offers his victory to us to live in.
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version. (2016). (). Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles.
Let’s live in that victory FREE from sin, with NO FEAR of death. Lets live ALIVE to God in Christ Jesus.
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version. (2016). (). Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles.
