Q - What does the Bible say about trust?
Disclaimer - God’s desire for us is to ultimately trust Him above all & offers wisdom to us in relating to others.
Disclaimer - God is trustworthy. Period. If He were not to be trusted then He wouldn’t be God, because His character would be flawed.
There are many questions that come to our minds when we consider this topic.
We were never meant to trust ourselves. Rather, we were created & design to depend on God.
Disclaimer - God is trustworthy. Period. If He were not to be trusted then He wouldn’t be God, because His character would be flawed.

I feel like the person who asked this question about trust is more concerning about what the Bible says about trusting one another and not trusting God. On the safe side, we’re going to cover both.

Dictionary Definition
Trust - An act of dependency upon another person.
The Problem
Our well-being is subjective to the other persons ability to protect what we give to them. If someone betrays our trust, then we get hurt.
The Tension
There’s tension in our lives when it comes to placing our trust in another person. Why? We ultimately do not want to be let down by another person that we trust.
The Reality
We want to trust one another. But the truth of the matter is that we, by default, will let others down and will be let down by others. Just because that is true doesn’t mean that people aren’t trustworthy. We just need to know that reality.
Another reality we must know is that God is perfect in his truth-worthiness. In the midst of all the “let downs” and hurts in life, God will always be trusted and will never let us down.
Example: Jesus knows what it’s like to be let down by others - disciples let him fled in the moments Jesus needed them the most. What did Jesus do? Entrusted himself fully to the Father and forgave. Forgave to the measure of restoring those who let him down (Peter & disciples).
I. Our wicked hearts
5  Thus says the Lord:
“Cursed is the man who trusts in man
and makes flesh his strength,
whose heart turns away from the Lord.
By default, we depend and trust ourselves & our strength. That’s why we needed Jesus to give us a new heart at the moment of conversion. says that “by nature we were children of wrath.” Therefore, our decision making process without Jesus ultimately is turned away from the Lord.
7  “Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord,
whose trust is the Lord.
8  He is like a tree planted by water,
that sends out its roots by the stream,
and does not fear when heat comes,
for its leaves remain green,
and is not anxious in the year of drought,
for it does not cease to bear fruit.”
The opposite it true for the person who know Christ. This person wholly, 100% trusts in Jesus & His Word. As a result, as a correct view of people and how to interact with others in all situations.
19  God is not man, that he should lie,
or a son of man, that he should change his mind.
Has he said, and will he not do it?
Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it?

I. Our Flesh Is Wicked

Jeremiah 17:5–6 ESV
5 Thus says the Lord: “Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength, whose heart turns away from the Lord. 6 He is like a shrub in the desert, and shall not see any good come. He shall dwell in the parched places of the wilderness, in an uninhabited salt land.
5  Thus says the Lord:
“Cursed is the man who trusts in man
Psalm 73:26 ESV
26 My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
Psalm 73:
and makes flesh his strength,
By default, we depend and trust ourselves & our strength. As most of us know, when we trust ourselves things go wrong, we miss things up. That’s why we needed Jesus to give us a new heart at the moment of conversion. says that “by nature we were children of wrath.”
“by nature we were children of wrath” means that we by default disregard God and do what we want, which is sin.
whose heart turns away from the Lord.
Without considering God, mistakes are made in how we treat one another. So, when someone lets us down (which will happen), we respond incorrectly when we don’t consider God.
Therefore, our decision making process without Jesus ultimately is opposite from the Lord.
By default, we depend and trust ourselves & our strength. That’s why we needed Jesus to give us a new heart at the moment of conversion. says that “by nature we were children of wrath.” Therefore, our decision making process without Jesus ultimately is turned away from the Lord.
Jeremiah 17:7–8 ESV
7 “Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord. 8 He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit.”
What is the correct way to view people and what is the correct way to interact with others when this happens?
7  “Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord,

and does not fear when heat comes,

for its leaves remain green,
In light of the reality of we will let each other down, we need to ask this question:
and is not anxious in the year of drought,
What is the correct way to view people and what is the correct way to interact with others when this happens?
for it does not cease to bear fruit.”
John 13:34–35 ESV
34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. 35 By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
The opposite it true for the person who know Christ. This person wholly, 100% trusts in Jesus & His Word. As a result, as a correct view of people and how to interact with others in all situations.
Colossians 3:12–14 ESV
12 Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, 13 bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. 14 And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.
Colossians 3:12-
God’s will for us is to treat others right.
The world constantly tells us to always look after ourselves first and it’s okay to hurt people. God desires the opposite.
Listen students, we cannot control what others do. But we can control what we do and how we react and interact.
When we are right with Christ, we will be right with others.
Be the person you want others to be. If someone violates your trust, you chose how to react.
We can react out of the flesh, which is wicked. OR we can react from the Holy Spirit in us, which will always be right.
19  God is not man, that he should lie,

II. God Invites Us To Trust Him

or a son of man, that he should change his mind.
Another reality we must know is that God is perfect in his truth-worthiness. In the midst of all the “let downs” and hurts in life, God will always be trusted and will never let us down.
Has he said, and will he not do it?
Numbers 23:19 ESV
19 God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should change his mind. Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it?
Psalm 18:30 ESV
30 This God—his way is perfect; the word of the Lord proves true; he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him.

Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it?

Disclaimer - God is trustworthy. Period. If He were not to be trusted then He wouldn’t be God, because His character would be flawed.
Every word is trustworthy because God is trustworthy. Period.
Disclaimer - God is trustworthy. Period. If He were not to be trusted then He wouldn’t be God, because His character would be flawed.
If He were not to be trusted then He wouldn’t be God, because His character would be flawed.
So, if God is perfect (which He is), then He will be perfect in his dependency & trustworthiness. It’s in His nature.
Students, when we trust God, we are trusting in someone thats bigger than ourselves. God is not like us. God is perfect.

III. Conclusion

As we conclude talking about trust tonight, it means everything.
When we trust God, we are essentially giving Him our life.
“Here God. I don’t want to be responsible, I want you to. I put my trust in You.”
Psalm
Psalm 18:30 ESV
30 This God—his way is perfect; the word of the Lord proves true; he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him.
