A Need for Hope

The Sin Problem

Creation was perfect, but temptation was introduced through the Serpent.
God’s creation was perfect, but where there is free choice, people will choose wrong. Satan & his angels fell from heaven, and now we battle against those spiritual forces (, , )
Adam & Eve faced those same forces in the Garden when the Serpent visited.

The Fall of Man

Genesis 3:1–5 NIV
Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’ ” “You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
Genesis 3:1–5 NIV

Sin = Anything in God’s rightful place
The temptation is “YOU WILL BE LIKE GOD”
This was the desire to be like God, and we still struggle with this today.
WE can handle our problem. We don’t need help, etc.

Genesis 3:13–15 NIV
Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.” So the Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, “Cursed are you above all livestock and all wild animals! You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life. And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.”
Genesis 3:13–15 NIV

A Need for Hope

From that moment humans needed hope. ALL SIN AND FALL SHORT OF THE GLORY OF GOD. Every one of us suffers from the same problem as Adam and Eve. WE WANT TO BE LIKE GOD!
And they had hope. The promise is Eve’s offspring would crush the head of the Serpent. That GOOD would destroy EVIL.
Over the years this hope would fluctuate. More promises led to more hope. Rough times, the destruction of Solomon’s Temple, exile into Babylon, spirits crushed, but still hope!
NEXT WEEK WE’LL LOOK AT THESE PROMISES.
The problem with sin is you are powerless to stop it. Knowing something is wrong doesn’t really help (LAW).
People were still powerless. God gave them a way to deal with their sin through sacrifice, but he had a better way…a perfect way - AT THE PERFECT TIME!

Hope Delivered

Paul shows us the HOPE received by those long ago that still gives us hope today.
God sent his MESSIAH, (anointed one, CHRIST), the only one who could deal with our sin problem!
Romans 5:1–11 NIV
Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God. Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us. You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through him! For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life! Not only is this so, but we also boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.
Romans 5:1–2 NIV

Romans 5:3–5 NIV

Romans 5:11 NIV
Not only is this so, but we also boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.
If you look at the next verse, you’ll see Paul sets up the argument that just as sin entered the world through one man, the world is also saved by one man, JESUS.
Romans 5:9–11 NIV

Waiting for Hope

Just as the world waiting with anticipation for the coming of the Savior, we too wait for the Savior to come again.

It was a confusing time in the first century. Many felt Jesus would be right back. And as believers began to die, the people wondered what would happen to them as they died waiting for his return.
& - Jesus says the Gospel must be preached in all nations first, and then the end will come. (It still hasn’t, that we know of…I wouldn’t rest too easy on that one.)
But a real crisis of faith arose around those who had died. Would they miss out on Jesus’ return? Would they even see him at all? Would we have to spend eternity without them in heaven?
1 Thessalonians 4:13–18 NIV
Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. According to the Lord’s word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. Therefore encourage one another with these words.
Encourage one another with these words.

Waiting for Hope

Those in Christ will not remain in the grave. Their bodies are just resting until he returns.
We have a job to do. Some have not surrendered to Christ…they have not made him Lord of their Life, they have not been baptized. THEY DON’T ACKNOWLEDGE HIM, SO HE WON’T ACKNOWLEDGE THEM. !
They will not experience BEING WITH THE LORD FOREVER. THEIR CONSEQUENCES WILL BE ETERNAL. THIS NEEDS TO BE KNOWN.
AS THE WORLD CELEBRATES HIS FIRST COMING, ARE WE PROCLAIMING THE GOOD NEWS ABOUT HIS SECOND COMING?
JUST AS ISRAEL LOOKED FOR THE COMING MESSIAH, ARE WE ABOUT THE WORK OF THE MESSIAH AND PREPARING FOR HIS RETURN?
What is Jesus calling you to do today?
