Ephesians 5:21–27 ESV
21 submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ. 22 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands. 25 Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, 26 that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, 27 so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.

A. Context
A. Mutually Submit to one another
a. verse 21 is the hinge
1. notice vs says :
Eph 5:21
Ephesians 5:21 ESV
21 submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.
i. original greek reads: (re-read 21) vs 22: “wives to your own husband as to the Lord”
-what’s it mean to submit?
ii. submit: willingly, sacrificially, serve & defer to another
-Paul is referring to a mutual submission
-This is how the Church should relate to ea. other...
- There should be a willingness in the Christian fellowship to serve, to learn from, be corrected by any, regardless of age, sex, class, or any other division!
-b4 we continue lets remember that submission is evidence o the spirit in our life
willingness in the Christian fellowship to serve any, to learn from any, to be corrected by any, regardless of age, sex, class, or any other division
*NOT 1 more thing we have to strive to accomplish
*So, if we find ourselves convicted by the spirit, our job is to:
~repent (turn from our sin 2ward God)
~draw nearer to God & his spirit daily & these things we see lacking will begin 2 flow out o us naturally; AMEN?!
iii. The Next 20+ vs describe how to practically submit to 1another in various rel.
ii. Next 20+ vs describe how to practically submit to 1another in various relationships
2. Paul starts w/the most important rel. God ever created: husband & wife!
i. It is significant that throughout this section husbands & wives r reminded of their duties & not their rights
It is significant that throughout this section husbands and wives are reminded of their duties and not their rights
-Why?
Foulkes, F. (1989). Ephesians: an introduction and commentary (Vol. 10, p. 159). Downers Grove, IL: InterVarsity Press.
*because to focus on the rights insights selfishness, focusing on 1’s duties insights 1 to selflessness
*Out of reverence for Jesus!
~We recognize that we r not the only 1 w/the H.S.
A. Submit to one another
Ephesians 5:21 ESV
21 submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.
b. How the wife submits
A. Submit to one another
a. how the wife submits
Ephesians 5:22–24 ESV
22 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands.
Ephesians 5:22–23 ESV
22 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior.
Ephesians 5:22–23 ESV
22 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior.
1. A Christian wife submits to her own husband
i. It does NOT say women submit to men, but wife submit to ur OWN husband
ii. head of wife in terms of leadership, not value.
- there is no diff. in worth btwn men/women (equal value),
- there is no diff. in worth btwn men/women (equal value),
Galatians 3:28 ESV
28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
Gal 3L28
-but in the family, for its order & its unity, there must b leadership, & the responsibility o leadership is that o the husband & father
there is no ‘difference in worth’ but in the family, for its order and its unity, there must be leadership, and the responsibility of leadership is that of the husband and father
-Christ-like leadership is servanthood (washing the disciples feet)
*Not pushy, demanding, overbearing, harsh dictatorship
* but, christ-like leadership
-Christ-like leadership is servanthood
*Servant leadership
~Servant leadership
Matt
Matthew 20:25–28 ESV
25 But Jesus called them to him and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. 26 It shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, 27 and whoever would be first among you must be your slave, 28 even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
*illust. washing the disciples feet ()
~real illust o loving, servant leadership (vs 1: “loved his own…to the end”)
2. A Christian wife submits as to the lord
2. Submits as to the lord
i. That is to say, 1’s obedience to Jesus leads her to submit to her husband
3. A Christian wife submits as the church does to Jesus
Eph 5:24
Ephesians 5:24 ESV
24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands.
i. marriage: the ultimate expression o Jesus’ rel. to the church
-even our marriage should b a living proclamation of the Gospel
iii. Let’s get practical: Rebekah:
c. How the husband submits:
Ephesians 5:25–27 ESV
25 Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, 26 that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, 27 so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.
Ephesians 5:25 ESV
25 Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her,
Eph 5:25
1. A Christian husband submits by loving his wife like Christ loves the church (how?)
i. love through sacrifice (Gave himself up)
-talking about dying so she lives
-a Christ following husband submits by denying his own needs to meet the needs of his wife!
2. love is NOT gooey emotions or romance (although we may sacrifice by being romantic)
i. love is NOT gooey emotions or romance (although we may sacrifice by being romantic)
i. love is:
1 Cor
1 Corinthians 13:4–8 ESV
4 Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant 5 or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; 6 it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. 7 Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 8 Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away.
-If we replace the word “love” w/ “I”…(read) does this list accurately describe how we treat our wife?
-sacrifice, w/out love as described here is useless:
1 Corinthians 13:1–3 ESV
1 If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3 If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing.
3. A Christian husband loves by sanctifying her
1 Cor 13:1-
Ephesians 5:26–27 ESV
26 that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, 27 so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.
Ephesians 5:26 ESV
26 that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word,
i. sanctify: to make sacred
how?
-When we accurately
ii. how?
how?
- Christ’s sacrificial death washes his church clean from sin
*by his sacrifice Jesus made His Church spotless, holy, w/out blemish!
*Men, when we die to ourselves
-husbands, if we sacrificially love our wife as described in , the spirit lead, christ-like spouse will respond w/submission and respect!
-husbands, if christ’s job is to sanctify the church, & we are to be Christ’s representative to the family who’s job is it to wash our wife w/the word?
-husbands, if christ’s job is to sanctify the church, & we are to be Christ’s representative to the family who’s job is it to wash our wife w/the word?
-if christ’s job is to sanctify the church, & we are to be Christ’s representative to the family who’s job is it to wash our wife w/the word?
-notice it says wash her with the word, not beat her with the word!
*washing is an intimate act of service (remember washing disciples feet? Jesus mentions washing of the word in the story)
: “already u r clean because o the word I have spoken over u”
~We wash her w/ the word by living out Jesus’ teachings daily in our relationship w/her
~We wash her w/ the word by praying scripture over her diligently
^But pastor, I don’t know the scriptures (time to start studying huh?)
~We wash her by leading the family in bible study regularly
^guess it’s time to sacrifice a little time w/the buddies, the job, the tv, etc
iii. the result: (the spirit does HIS part)
-husbands, if we sacrificially love our wife as described in , the spirit lead, christ-like spouse will respond w/submission and respect!
iii. the objective:
-her splendor: she is lovely, pure, perfect, set apart
Ephesians 5:27 ESV
27 so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.
B. Communion (washing our wife with the word practically)
1 Corinthians 11:23–24 ESV
23 For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”
1 Cor 11:23-24
1 Cor 11:25-26
1 Corinthians 11:25–26 ESV
25 In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.
