the birth of a baby is a cause for great rejoicing
if Jesus was no different than any other baby he would long have been forgotten
when we remember people who have died we remember them not for their births but for their life accomplishments both negatively and positively
examples: Judas, King David, Abraham
why is Jesus’ birth remembered above all others?
Jesus’ birth is remembered because he was God.
At Christmas we celebrate not just the birth of a baby in a manger in Bethlehem but God taking on flesh.
if that sounds odd to you, you are not alone
how could God be born if he is the eternal God?
how could God become something he was not?
why would God take upon himself the nature of one of his creatures?
to answer these questions must understand that God is Father, God is Son and God is Holy Spirit
this is the biblical doctrine of the Trinity
The word “trinity” is not found in the bible the triune nature of God permeates the scriptures. (; ; Cor 13:14)
we find it at the very the beginning of the bible in
Genesis 1:26 ESV
26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
let us make man
God is a plurality of persons
we find it in the first book of the New Testament
Matthew 28:19 ESV
19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
when a believer is baptized they are immersed into the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit
as a result they are indwelt by all 3 persons of the Godhead (see my message on , Oct 7, 2018)
2 Corinthians 13:14 ESV
14 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
as Christmas approaches we will focus on the names given to Jesus, the 2nd person of the Trinity
today: Jesus & Immanuel
next Sunday: Saviour () , Lord (), Christ (, ; Lk 2:26)
Dec 23: Son of Abraham (), Son of David (), Son of God (), Son of the Most High (Lk 1:32)
Definition of the Trinity from Chapter 2 of the 1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith
In this divine and infinite Being there are three subsistences, the Father, the Word or Son, and Holy Spirit, of one substance, power, and eternity, each having the whole divine essence, yet the essence undivided: the Father is of none, neither begotten nor proceeding; the Son is eternally begotten of the Father; the Holy Spirit proceeding from the Father and the Son; all infinite, without beginning, therefore but one God, who is not to be divided in nature and being, but distinguished by several peculiar relative properties and personal relations; which doctrine of the Trinity is the foundation of all our communion with God, and comfortable dependence on him.

Jesus

the angel Gabriel said to Mary
Luke 1:31 ESV
31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus.
Matthew 1:18 ESV
18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit.
Lk
the angel of the Lord to Joseph
Matthew 1:20–21 ESV
20 But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”
Mt 1:20-21
The name Jesus comes from the Hebrew “Yehoshua” later shortened to “Yeshua”.
“Yehoshua” = Joshua = Yahweh is salvation
Jesus the English rendering of the Greek
The meaning of Jesus’ name is, “to deliver; to rescue”.
“Jesus” occurs 966x in the NT!
often used in connection with his other names:
Jesus Christ & Christ Jesus (most common)
Christ Jesus
Lord Jesus
Lord Jesus Christ
Saviour, Jesus Christ
Lord Jesus
Jesus = to deliver; to rescue
Q: from what?
the angel of the Lord to Joseph
Matthew 1:20–21 ESV
20 But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”
Jesus was born to save his people from their sins. (Mt 1:21)
the sin problem:
Genesis 2:17 ESV
17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”
Gen
Adam and Eve designated by God the representatives of the whole human race which would come from them
When Adam sinned and fell under the sentence of death all fell with him. (; Eph 2:1)
“… in Adam all die”
this is our natural state
Ephesians 2:1 ESV
1 And you were dead in the trespasses and sins
Ephesians 2:1–2 ESV
1 And you were dead in the trespasses and sins 2 in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience—
the problem of God’s justice:
Romans 3:23 ESV
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
how does a perfectly holy God acquit guilty sinners?
through a perfectly holy substitute
2 Corinthians 5:21 ESV
21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
2 Cor 5:21
substitutionary atonement
Read
for whom did Jesus do this? who are the beneficiaries of this atonement?
“he will save his people from their sins”
from God’s vantage point: “he will save his people from their sins”
before a believer is saved they are “his people”
Ephesians 1:4 ESV
4 even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love
eph
had ever been saved through faith in him
Ephesians 1:4–6 ESV
4 even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love 5 he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, 6 to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved.
Speaking to believers Paul told them they had been chosen by God before the creation of the world. (; Tim 1:9-10)
on what basis? on the basis of their choice? on the basis of anything they did?
2 Timothy 1:9–10 ESV
9 who saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began, 10 and which now has been manifested through the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel,
2 Timothy 1:8–10 ESV
8 Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord, nor of me his prisoner, but share in suffering for the gospel by the power of God, 9 who saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began, 10 and which now has been manifested through the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel,
believer, if you are trusting in the Lord Jesus Christ give God all the praise and glory and honour
unbeliever, though you are dead in your trespasses and sins God commands you to believe on His Son the Lord Jesus Christ
if you will humble yourself before God he will give you his grace to believe and be saved
Jesus will save his people from their sins
Philippians 2:9–11 ESV
9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Acts 4:12 ESV
12 And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

Immanuel

Matthew 1:23 ESV
23 “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us).
Matthew 1:21 ESV
21 She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”
Immanuel, God with us
When Jesus saves his people from their sins he is with them forever! (Mt 1:23)
when Jesus saves his people from their sins he is with them forever!
is a quote from
Isaiah commissioned to preach to God’s people who had closed their eyes and ears to his warnings of judgment
Jesus also quoted this when asked by his disciples why he taught in parables!
two kings joined their armies to attack Jerusalem
King Ahaz and his people were terrified
God sent Isaiah to tell King Ahaz not to be afraid because he was going to bring their plan to nothing ()
God told Ahaz to ask for a sign a proof he would do this for them
pretending to be righteous and feigning a desire not to test God, Ahaz refused to obey
in anger God gave him a sign anyway
Isaiah 7:14–16 ESV
14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. 15 He shall eat curds and honey when he knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good. 16 For before the boy knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good, the land whose two kings you dread will be deserted.
Isaiah 7:14–15 ESV
14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. 15 He shall eat curds and honey when he knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good.
Isaiah 7:14 ESV
14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.
Isa 7:14-
birth and maturing of Immanuel was both a blessing and a warning
the land of the kings they dreaded would be deserted because the King of Assyria would come against them and destroy them
if Israel did not repent Assyria would come and conquer them as well!
Immanuel a sign of deliverance but also a warning of judgment if they continued in their sinful rebellion
Luke 2:34 ESV
34 And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, “Behold, this child is appointed for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is opposed
Immanuel = God with us
Jesus is remembered because he was God in the flesh
at Christmas we celebrate not just the birth of a baby but the birth of God
if that sounds odd to you, you are not alone
how could God be born if he is the eternal God?

brings us to the doctrine of the Trinity
while the word “trinity” is not found in the bible the concept is right from the beginning in
Genesis 1:26 ESV
26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
let us make man
whoever God is, he is a plurality of persons
Matthew 28:19 ESV
19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
all 3 persons of the Godhead
2 Corinthians 13:14 ESV

Immanuel, God with us = Jesus
Jesus who is our Saviour is also Immanuel , God with us.
Philippians 2:5–11 ESV
5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Php 2:
Immanuel = God with us
why was it necessary for Jesus to take upon himself human flesh and come and be with us?
the reason is hinted at in v.8, “obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross”
Deuteronomy 21:23 ESV
23 his body shall not remain all night on the tree, but you shall bury him the same day, for a hanged man is cursed by God. You shall not defile your land that the Lord your God is giving you for an inheritance.
John 3:14–16 ESV
14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. 16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
John 3:15–16 ESV
15 that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. 16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
John 3:14–16 ESV
14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. 16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
just as those
John 3:14-17
Immanuel’s other name Jesus is even more obvious: he will save his people from their sins
how is Immanuel with us?
John 14:15–17 ESV
15 “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, 17 even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.
John 14:16–17 ESV
16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, 17 even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.
Jesus, Immanuel, is in those who obey him through his Holy Spirit.
2 John 2 ESV
2 because of the truth that abides in us and will be with us forever:
John 15:16–17 ESV
16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. 17 These things I command you, so that you will love one another.
2 John
the result:
Romans 8:14–17 ESV
14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. 15 For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” 16 The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.
Rom 8:14
John 15:16
“led by the Spirit of God”
Romans 8:12–17 ESV
12 So then, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. 13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.
A true child of God is led by the Spirit of God. (Rom 8:14-17)
to be a child of God is to be led by the Spirit of God
if the HS is in you, he will lead you
As the Spirit of truth, the Holy Spirit’s purpose is to lead God’s children into all truth. ()
Rom 8:12-
“you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons”
we are God’s own dear children
he is our Father - we do not fall back into fear!
proof or our adoption: “we cry, ‘Abba, Father’
“The Spirit bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God”
he speaks through his word, he answers prayer, he fulfills promises, he guides and directs as we commit our way to him
O what blessings are ours in Jesus our Saviour, our Immanuel, God with us!
for those who are not born again, if you want to know this Immanuel who will live in you and never leave you I call you to repent of your sins and come to Jesus
.
