Week 1 - The dilemma.
Week 2 - Why Jesus Came
Today - Who is Jesus?
We began our service with a reading from the book of John chapter 1. It is here that we will focus our time this morning.
<<The Word was at the Beginning>>

The Word was at the Beginning.

Before there was anything, there was the eternal God.
The Word - Jesus - is coequal with God and was present with Him as we will see.
Reference here is to Genesis 1:1 - “In the beginning God.”
<<With God>>

With God

The Word is in a special relationship of eternal fellowship in the Trinity.
One of the first heresies of the church was that Jesus was not God.
<<Was God>>

Was God

John leaves no doubt as to what he is stating. The Word is God.
<<The Word is eternal; the Word is in relationship to the Father; and the Word is God.>>

The Word is eternal; the Word is in relationship to the Father; and the Word is God.

The Word has always been there. Verse 2 states that Word was present with God at the beginning.
The Word was at the beginning - Eternal.
<<The Word Created Everything.>>

The Word Created Everything

Verse 3 - Creator of all things.
Why is there something rather than nothing? The Word!
He is the agent of creation.
<<1 Cor 8:6>>
1 Corinthians 8:6 ESV
yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and through whom we exist.
Paul, who wrote prior to John, puts Jesus as co-equal with the Father.
From God - Through Jesus Christ
<<Col 1:16>>
Colossians 1:16 ESV
For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.
This is a very important verse. Don’t miss out on what Paul is saying.
All things created visible and invisible.
The heavens.
The angels.
Unseen realm.
All things through Him and for Him.
Uncreated things are not included —> The Spirit.
<<Notice John 1:3>>
John 1:3 ESV
All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.
John makes sure that we would understand that all things created, are created by the Word.
<<Jesus is the Word; the eternal and uncreated creator; who created all things created.>>

Jesus is the Word; eternal and uncreated creator; who created all things created.

<<The Word is Life and Light>>

The Word is Life and Light

Life is found in Christ - the Word.
Life is a theme word in the Book of John.
Used over 30 times.
John 5:26 ESV
For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself.
<<6:57>>
John 6:57 ESV
As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever feeds on me, he also will live because of me.
<<10:10>>
John 10:10 ESV
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.
<<11:25>>
John 11:25 ESV
Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live,
Jesus gives life.
<<14:6>>
John 14:6 ESV
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
<<17:3>>
John 17:3 ESV
And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.
<<20:31>>
John 20:31 ESV
but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
Jesus is the Word, the Word is the source of life - real Life.
<<Life & Light>>

Word is Life and Light

The light of men.
Light represents God in the Bible.
Darkness represents death, ignorance, sin, and separation.
<<Is 9:2>>
Isaiah 9:2 ESV
The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone.
Light dispels or invades the darkness.
Light reveals
Imagine your bedroom at home.
Jesus Christ, the Word, came into the world to invade and overcome the darkness.
Darkness cannot overcome the light.
The light will be victorious despite any opposition.
