Choices have consequences
Choices have consequences
Our information, our knowledge, our understanding, our wisdom all lead to us making choices and our choices have consequences. Consequences can be good, in form of blessing, or bad and lead to destruction.

The national average in 2017 for suicide is 13.42% per 100,000 people. that comes bout to 44,965 of known suicides in the United States, that is 123 a day. Out of every known suicide there are 25 attempted suicides. Iowa is right in the midst of the national average as published by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Men are 3.5x more likely than women and middle aged white men are the highest.
Choices have consequences and here in Proverbs 10- Proverbs 22:16 there is a shift that happens from painting a beautiful picture of wisdom and the importance of acquiring wisdom (Pro4:7) we see many contrasts painted by the writer.
7 “The beginning of wisdom is: Acquire wisdom; And with all your acquiring, get understanding.
Wisdom, understanding require application, require a choice what you are going to do with the wisdom and understanding, we are told to seek wisdom and stay far away from folly (or the fool).

1 The proverbs of Solomon. A wise son makes a father glad, But a foolish son is a grief to his mother.

So what kind of son? one who makes a father glad? One who accepts direction and discipline?

20 A wise son makes a father glad, But a foolish man despises his mother.
A foolish son brings grief to the mother and sorrow to the father.
21 He who sires a fool does so to his sorrow, And the father of a fool has no joy.
Both parents experience joy or grief, or even sorrow as both are involved in the teaching as noted before. But it is important what you do with the teaching.

What we allow in, what we store within, is what is going to come out out mouth, out lips by our tongue. Wisdom or babble, wisdom or foolishness that conceals violence and brings on ruin. So choose wisely.

The righteous will never hunger; but will reject the wicked (Pro10:3; Mt5:6)
Diligence or sloth, your choice, your consequence (Pro10:3-5)
What is on the inside comes to the outside; in other words what you say matters (Lk6:45; Pro10:6, 8, 10, 11, 13, 14, 18, 19, 20, 21 and 31)

3 The Lord will not allow the righteous to hunger, But He will reject the craving of the wicked.
The Lord will not only not allow to hunger, but those who hunger and thirst for righteousness He will fill.
6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, For they shall be filled.
The righteous will never hunger; but will reject the wicked (Pro10:3; Mt5:6)

3 The Lord will not allow the righteous to hunger, But He will reject the craving of the wicked. 4 Poor is he who works with a negligent hand, But the hand of the diligent makes rich.
5 He who gathers in summer is a son who acts wisely, But he who sleeps in harvest is a son who acts shamefully.
The lazy, the slothful, the one who is negligent acts shamefully
The wise works diligently, gathers and acts wisely.
So chose wisely

Now I said this was a survey of Proverbs 10 so we are a survey of lips, mouth that stems from the heart, look at the contrasts as we go through this
6 Blessings are on the head of the righteous, But the mouth of the wicked conceals violence.
Blessings to the one who keeps his head, and keeps his mouth closed. The wicked conceal violence, be it by words of strife or discourse, it does bring to ruin
8 The wise of heart will receive commands, But a babbling fool will be ruined.
The wise is willing to receive commands, teaching, instruction, correction, in other words wisdom and understanding for application.
The fool, the babbling fool will be ruined
10 He who winks the eye causes trouble, And a babbling fool will be ruined. 11 The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life, But the mouth of the wicked conceals violence.
The babbling fool again will be ruined
The righteous, the wise, his mouth is a fountain of life.
13 On the lips of the discerning, wisdom is found, But a rod is for the back of him who lacks understanding. 14 Wise men store up knowledge, But with the mouth of the foolish, ruin is at hand.
To the one who uses discernment there is wisdom and knowledge.
To the fool there is but a rod and ruin is at his hand.
18 He who conceals hatred has lying lips, And he who spreads slander is a fool. 19 When there are many words, transgression is unavoidable, But he who restrains his lips is wise.
We have seen concealed violence now we see concealed hatred that has lying lips, who is a gossip and slander
But the one who restrains his lips is wise
20 The tongue of the righteous is as choice silver, The heart of the wicked is worth little. 21 The lips of the righteous feed many, But fools die for lack of understanding.
A precious jewel is the tongue of the righteous, with the lips of his words he can feed many with words that build up, edify, encourage and promote unity and peace.
The wicked one, his heart and his lips are worth little and they die for lack of understanding.
31 The mouth of the righteous flows with wisdom, But the perverted tongue will be cut out.
Don’t let your tongue be cut out, be wise and let your mouth flow with wisdom!
So chose wisely what you allow in so you know what will come out! For the mouth is a life source.

Mouth is a life source
As you know by the words of God the universe and everything in it was created. And by the Word of God comes faith that can save anyone, so may the words that we use from our mouth be a good life source.

The words that we use are significant; may we chose the right words because:

21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit.
Serious, very serious, so chose wisely look at what James had to say.
5 So also the tongue is a small part of the body, and yet it boasts of great things. See how great a forest is set aflame by such a small fire! 6 And the tongue is a fire, the very world of iniquity; the tongue is set among our members as that which defiles the entire body, and sets on fire the course of our life, and is set on fire by hell.
The tongue, the words we use can defile the entire body! Then look t the end of (v.6) it gets worse from there.
Oh but now look at Jn6:68
68 Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have words of eternal life.
Peter knew what Jesus had, so may we go to the source of the Good News, of the Words of eternal life, go to the Bible and use those words to bring faith hope and love to others.

4 and there must be no filthiness and silly talk, or coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks.

6 Let your speech always be with grace, as though seasoned with salt, so that you will know how you should respond to each person.
Words of grace!
29 Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear.

Just like our choices regarding wisdom, choices regarding our mouth, we have choices regarding our heart, and it matters our choice.

How can we do that? We do that by applied trust (Psm37:3-5)
How? By applying some biblical principles (Lk5:1-11)
How? By some principles regarding obedience (1Pt1:5-6; Jn8:12)

Be willing to receive in your heart the commands of the Lord.

Your worth is often found in your words, your words come from the overflow of your heart, so be careful what you allow in!

How can we do that? We do that by applied trust (Psm37:3-5)
3 Trust in the Lord and do good; Dwell in the land and cultivate faithfulness. 4 Delight yourself in the Lord; And He will give you the desires of your heart.
5 Commit your way to the Lord, Trust also in Him, and He will do it.
Trust and you will be able to commit
Commit and you will be able to delight
Delight and you can know, through faithful prayer, that God is faithful to hear and answer according to His will.
What is your hearts desire?
Is it your assured salvation?
Is it salvation for your family, your friends?
What about physical heath and provision? It’s OK to want these things in accordance with God’s will.

How can we do that? We do that by applied trust (Psm37:3-5)
How? By applying some biblical principles (Lk5:1-11)
summarize Lk5:1-11; this is the choosing and the calling of the first disciples who were to become apostles. Jesus is surrounded by a crowd and gives direction to a fisherman nmed Simon and told him to push off so that He could teach. When He was done, He instructed Simon to let down his net for a catch, see what happens.
5 Simon answered and said, “Master, we worked hard all night and caught nothing, but I will do as You say and let down the nets.”
6 When they had done this, they enclosed a great quantity of fish, and their nets began to break; 7 so they signaled to their partners in the other boat for them to come and help them. And they came and filled both of the boats, so that they began to sink.
from these verses may we learn to that by the words of Jesus may we obey them to receive what the Lord has for us. But the true blessings came by faith, Obedient faith.

5 who are protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. 6 In this you greatly rejoice, even though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been distressed by various trials,
Rewarded faith
12 Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, “I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.”
Faith that give you light, and the Light of Life!
So to try to close this out tonight. Choices matter, we need to chose wisely for not choosing is a choice and that is foolish. Remember choices, words, heart all matter. Just a few more words on words.
Chose words that:
Bring faith (Rom10:17)
Bring godly repentance (2Cor7:10)
Bring confession (Rom10:9-10)
Bring obedience (Act2:38) and a new life (Rom6:3-4)
