We continue in our series from the Psalms with another portion of the longest Psalm. This alphabetic Psalm is the most exhaustive testimonial of the value of God’s word. Each eight-verse section of the Psalm has a particular benefit in mind as it declares the value of God’s word. Each section is defined by the opening statement.

I) How can the young secure their hearts? – v.9

Scholars disagree whether the “young man” is the Psalmist himself, or that the writer is an older man sharing wisdom with the young (I prefer the latter)
This implies that it is a difficult duty, as it would not need to be asked if simple
The answer is to keep (under control) the heart according to God’s word

II) Treasuring the promise – vs.10-11

With all my heart emphasizes an all-encompassing devotion to seek God –
Acts 17:26–27 ESV
And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place, that they should seek God, and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him. Yet he is actually not far from each one of us,
Seeking God through His word will prevent accidental sin – (vs.7-11)
Psalm 19:12 ESV
Who can discern his errors? Declare me innocent from hidden faults.
Keeping the promise of God as a treasure in our heart will keep us from sin –
Matthew 6:19–21 ESV
“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

III) Blessings to God for His word – vs.12-13

Psalmist praises God for the value of His statutes (legislative acts) and asks that God would teach them to him
If we praise God privately, we must also do so publicly –
Matthew 10:32–33 ESV
So everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven, but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven.
Tell others how God’s ordinances are beneficial to you

IV) Taking delight in God’s statutes – vs.14-16

If we want something with a complete and pure heart, when we obtain it, we are well-pleased – – we rejoice at God’s testimonies (laws that reveal His nature)
Matthew 13:44 ESV
“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up. Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.
We meditate (think deeply and introspectively) on the precepts (laws of conduct) and regard (place high value upon) God’s ways
We take such delight in the word that we will not forget it (such as the birth of a child)
Concl: The young (and not-so-young) can secure their heart from slippage by devoting themselves to God’s word. Our lives are often “busy”, but much of that is Satan trying to distract us from this treasure from God.
