By request, we will look at what the Bible tells us about angels.
Angels are mentioned a number of times in both testaments, but little is revealed about them (even with 300 mentions of angels), other than their role in God’s kingdom.
I) False concepts of angels
A) Entertainment media often portray angels as dead humans, but there is no Biblical suggestion of this – – instead they are clearly distinct
B) Angels are described as having human form, but this is only seen when angels come to man with a mission – , ; ,
C) Angels are often portrayed as opposite equivalent to demons, but demons appear to be evil spirits that had freedom to possess men for a period of time, which angels apparently do not do
II) Origin of angels
A) This can only be deduced from logic – God alone is eternal, so angels must be created beings, even though we have no statement of that
B) Angels appear to have free will – ; – which seems to be the origin of Satan
C) Angels do not seem to be subject to death – – so they are given eternal life, like the believers; but apparently have no method of forgiveness –
D) Three distinct types of angels are described – cherubim, seraphim, and archangels (two of whom are named – Michael, as head of the army of angels – – and Gabriel, who seems to be chief spokesman of the angels – , )
E) There are many angels – ; ;
III) Role of angels
A) Angels are a higher order of creation than mankind – – but angels should not be worshipped by man – ; ;
B) Most obvious role is as messengers (Greek aggelos – messenger) – ; ; ,
C) Guardians – ; – although it is not certain that each individual has a particular angel assigned as a personal guard –
D) Ministers – , ; – which we especially notice in their ministering to Jesus at the most difficult times – ;
E) Worshipping God continuously – ; ; ;
Concl: There is much that we do not know about angels; but that is logical, since they are not to be the objects of our worship.
They are created beings that serve and worship God in His presence.
As such, they serve as examples for us.
They also minister to us in our service to God.
