Who likes Surprises?
It is sometimes easy to loose sight of the real people of Christmas. They aren’t just characters in a story. Their lives were forever altered by their encounters with God’s plan.
Zacharias and Elizabeth had to be absolutely flabbergasted by the announcement of the Angel.
While they would have known of God’s promises, they could have never expected the central role in the appearance of Christ which was granted them.
Knowing God’s promises and being prepared to live and work in them are two different things.
The fact that God works in our lives should not be a surprise. How He works, however, often is.

God Works through our Faithfulness

Notice Zacharias’ and Elizabeth’s character in verse 6

Even though they had excuses to succumb to bitterness they remained faithful. (verse 7)

In the midst of fulfilling Zacharias’ responsibilities God was at work (verse 8)

God Works despite our Unworthiness

Zacharias did not orchestrate this encounter, he was chosen by lot to enter the temple. (verse 9)

Gabriel appears to Him without forewarning or request.

Zacharias knew he was unworthy (verse 12)

God’s Works are always for His Glory

“For he will be great in the sight of the Lord” (verse 15)

“he will turn many sons of Israel back to the Lord their God” (verse 16)

“he will go as a forerunner before Him” (verse 17)
