Left off last week with something terribly wrong. We all sense it because we all experience it and know it.
Sin. It corrupts everything it touches. Makes:
Beautiful - ugly
Sacred - profane
Perfect - broken & blemished
Life - corruption
Dilemma:
Man can do absolutely nothing about it.
God can’t simply look away —> LIAR.
“If you eat the fruit, you will surely die.”
What can be done?

“Only one who was fully human could atone for human sin; only one who was fully divine could have the power to save us.”
“Men could not have done it, for they are only made after the image; nor could angles have done it, for they are not the images of God. The Word of God came in His own Person, because it was He alone, the image of the Father, who could recreate man made after the image.”
God had to send his Son to do what only God could do.
Why did Jesus come? What did he come to do? Let’s look at His words.

And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And as was his custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up to read. And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”
Jesus reads a Messianic Prophecy.
The Spirit is upon Him. Spirit would give him supernatural wisdom.
Spirit was always with him.
Proclaim good news to the poor.
Proclaim good news to the poor.
Good News is a reference to O.T. prophecies concerning the Messiah.
Deut 18:18
I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers. And I will put my words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him.

How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news, who publishes peace, who brings good news of happiness, who publishes salvation, who says to Zion, “Your God reigns.”
Notice he does not come to preach to the righteous...

Captives are those in bondage - bondage to Satan and sin.
Only Jesus can liberate us from sins captivity.

If the son sets you free, you are free indeed.

We know he healed the blind - restoring sight.
Spiritual Element: Satan’s captives are blinded

In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.

Set free the oppressed
Set free the oppressed
Released as from jail. A bird set free.
Oppressed - being broken, crushed in spirit, feeling overwhelmed, undergoing severe hardship.
Jesus comes to set you free.
