True Story_pt1: He Turned Water Into Wine
Our first story takes place at a wedding.
Weddings are a big deal today, but were an even bigger deal in this day…
The wedding custom had 3 major parts
1.
Contract between parents of bride and bridegroom, and dowry.
(Betrothal or engagement period)
2. The bridegroom and his male friends went to the house of the bride at midnight creating a torchlight parade.
Bride would know and would be ready, joining the parade that ended at the bridegroom’s home.
3. Marriage supper, which might go on for days.
Water into wine
Even today, this might kill a party
But in this day, wine was a symbol of joy, happiness and abundance.
Running out of wine at a wedding was a huge embarrassment.
So Mary takes it upon herself to get Jesus involved…
Does she know what He can do?
Is she expecting a miracle?
Does she just know that if anyone can help it would be her son?
Not just a miracle, but a SIGN – a picture of all that He is.

Glory revealed
First revealed who he was…
1.
He is the true master of the banquet.
Weddings had a master of the banquet – life of the party.
Why would he do this miracle?
[WRITE IT DOWN] - He is revealing that He is the trust master of the banquet.
Haven’t you heard of the Dionysian stories of when the forest will run with wine – that is nothing compared to what I am.
Haven’t you read - On this mountain the Lord Almighty will prepare a feast of rich food for all peoples, a banquet of aged wine— the best of meats and the finest of wines.”
Of all the things I could show you first, I show you that I am “festival joy!”
Some think Christianity is “suck it up, stay clean, forget the fun”
Go to Him for everything!
Next He reveals what He came to do…
When the wine runs out, the party is over, Mary comes to Him for help.
2.
He will produce the wine for His own wedding.
Jesus responds a bit harshly to Mary,
“My hour has not yet come” – we've often thought this means that it’s not His time to perform miracles.
But since He does perform this miracle, we cannot believe that Mary twisted His arm…
So then, what did He mean by “My hour has not yet come?”
What was Jesus thinking of?
I believe He was thinking of two things…
1 - He’s thinking of His own wedding
Throughout the Old Testament, we’re told that God wants to know us as profoundly as a husband and a wife.
He often refers to Himself as the Bridegroom
John describes for us near the end of Revelation, what Jesus is thinking about…
,
2 - [WRITE IT DOWN] - He’s thinking of how we will produce wine for His own wedding.
“My hour” - the hour of His death.
The only way I’m going to be able to provide the wine, I must go through my death.
There was no way for Him to think of joining with us, without thinking how we will be joined – the hour of His death.
Give yourself to Him!
Finally it reveals what He comes to offer…
Salvation is wine, Heaven is a feast!
3.
He offers the taste of life.
The Bible uses sensory experience language when it comes to our relationship with God.
It’s not enough to know, but to taste.
You aren’t invited to know, you are invited to experience!
[EXAMPLE] I never taste honey, without being surprised of its sweetness.
[WRITE IT DOWN] - He offers the taste of life.
He wants us to taste and experience the fullness of His life!
What is Christianity?
It’s not a set of rules, it’s a feast!
The first step to tasting is to hunger/thirst for it!
Live life to the fullest!
Take Away
Much like a bridegroom standing at the altar, looking down aisle as the bride is coming towards him.
He longed to make us His bride!
Often, 6 is the number used in Scripture to represent man…
Ceremonial washing - The old way of washing, making clean, only a reminder of sin.
We cannot be clean; we cannot come near, without being joined to Him…

,
"Jesus sat amidst all the joy, sipping the coming sorrow - so that today you and I can sit amidst all this world's sorrow, sipping the coming joy." - One minister
Jesus in the garden, “take this cup from me…”
He gave His life so we could live!
Accept what He has done!
