Aleph: Obedience to God’s awesome word is the only way to experience true blessing.
Beth: God’s awesome word is the foundation for sanctification.
Gimel: God’s awesome word is needed to illuminate our understanding in the midst of opposition.
Daleth: God’s awesome word sustains us through seasons of great sorrow.
He: God’s awesome word supplies life and breath to our whole being.
Waw: God’s awesome word liberates us to loving obedience.
Transition: Finally, each of these stanzas have pushed us to gaze into the glory of Jesus Christ our Savior and Lord.
He is the incarnate word.
The logos of God, the Word that became flesh and dwelt among us.
His perfect obedience is the foundation for our salvation and sanctification.
His fulfillment of God’s awesome Word is the satisfaction that we needed in order to be made right with God.
When the Holy Spirit awakens us to our need to repent of sin and trust Christ according to God’s awesome Word, then we by faith respond to this good news and are truly converted.
From that moment we are enabled by the Holy Spirit to lovingly obey God’s awesome word not as a means of earning His favor but because we have been favored in Christ.
Big Point for Today: Remembering God’s awesome word causes hopeful comfort through affliction.
Lets see how this truth emerges from the text today first by reading it.
119:49-56 Now, explore some observations with me.
Remembering God’s awesome word causes hopeful comfort through affliction.
49- As followers of Christ we should pray according to God’s covenant keeping charecter.
Perhaps many of us today need reminded that , God remembers.
We can hope in the reality that God never forsakes His word.
50- The promises of God give life.
In the midst of affliction that may very well threaten death, our comfort is taken in the promises of God and there we find what life truly is.
Example: Multitude of accounts from those imprisoned for flowing Christ and faced with the sentience of death they find life in the promises of God.
51- What would it take to turn you away from whole counsel of God’s instructions?
Perhaps the mocking scorn of arrogant and proud person’s who are adamant to cause you pain?
I suppose for some of us it would take that much, but what this song reminds us is that even when we are being pressured to do so, we can courageously, confidently maintain a path of obedience to God’s law.
It will never do us good to forsake God’s law for any reason.
Perhaps today you are being tempted to turn away from God’s word?
It may be from those mocking voices of presumptuous people, however, it may be far more subtle than that.
Whatever form the temptation to turn away form God’s word is, how can we remain faithful?
Verse 52 gives us an answer.
(Read)
52- Notice the personalized comfort David takes in the “Lord”.
This comfort from the Lord happens as he remembers the Lord’s rules from old.
Point: The word of God is everlasting.
It is the final authority in the past, present and future.
Sometimes we are duped into believing that our afflictions are somehow new.
That the problems we face today are drastically different than those that believers have faced in years gone by.
Because of this we then begin to look for comfort and hope in new words, or new revelation in order to alleviate our new problems.
This, dear friends is a lie.
There is nothing new under the sun, and certainly the afflictions that face us today are not new.
The psalmist is helping us to see that the eternal word of God is always sufficient in every affliction at every point in time.
The Scriptures are our eternal comfort because they contain the very words of our eternal God.
Now, notice the change of tone in verse 53.
53- Have you ever prayed in anger?
Telling the Lord exactly why you are vehemently ticked off?
Before we make any hasty conclusion about anger lets explore for a moment what hot indignation from the Scriptures.
First of all notice that David is not angry about those who are against him.
He is not angry about the proud and arrogant who deride him.
Rather, he burns with indignation because of godless people who abandon the word of God.
We would do well to heed the warning of James 1:19-20.
We know that righteous anger is something that is beheld in the character of God.
The Lord Himself revealed to Moses that He is slow to anger in Exodus 34:6.
However, the Lord did grow angry with the idolatry of His covenant people who repeatedly broke His commands as we read in Numbers 11:1
Point: We should be very cautious of or own so called righteous indignation.
We should be angry and not sin as Psalms 4:4 and Ephesians 4:26 instructs us.
One reason this is so important is because the law of God reveals the very motives and intentions of our heart.
It is much like the point Jesus made on the sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5:21-22.
However, this prayer of hot indignation does help us in the midst of affliction.
I think it helps to correct our motives and causes us comfort that is rooted in an identity with Christ.
In other words, Is there an appropriate motive for praying with hot indignation?
Jesus shows us what true righteous indignation looks like when he cleansed the temple in Matthew 21:13 .
He drove out of the temple those who were seeking to make money off of the worship God had commanded His people.
However, Jesus did this on the basis of what was written in Isaiah 56:7.
Example:??? Praying against false teaching that forsakes the Scriptures.
Transition: Usually, when we are faced with severe affliction from those who have forsaken the word of God we might expect to loose sleep over the matter.
The oppression may dig deep into our soul.
And so we find once again the hope that God’s word provides in 119:54-55.
54- God’s prescriptions or statutes are our songs while we are displaced as foreigners in our temporary dwellings.
This reminded me of Acts chapter 16 when Paul and Silas were thrown into a Philippian jail for preaching Christ.
Verse 25 says that about midnight they were praying and signing hymns to God and the other prisoners were listening to them.
Songs are a means of reminder to us.
When we sing the truth of God’s word it becomes a storage in our memory bank.
And when affliction comes, those songs provide a means of great comfort.
This should cause us all to greatly consider what songs we hold as worth singing!
Sadly, much of the songs we summit our minds to today will not prove to be sufficient when we find ourselves in the dark night of affliction.
55- David tells the Lord that he remembers His name in the night.
Then, he goes on to restate his commitment to keeping law of the Lord.
The reason this is so important is because the names of God reveal His character.
And when we focus on the character of God, hope and comfort is sure to follow.
Story: This verse reminded me of a habit that a pastor mentor of mine told me he practiced.
When he was out on his lawn mower he wold recite to himself names of God revealed in the Scriptures and what they mean.
For example… Se Rose publishing flyer on the names of God.
Perhaps today you would begin the joy of committing to memory the names of God?
56- The blessing of hope and comfort from God’s awesome word through affliction further motivates obedience to His word.
Closing: Our weapon against the warfare of affliction is God’s awesome Word.
As we yield the eternal word against the fiery darts of the wicked we will have comfort through our affliction.
The awesome word of God is our bridge to cross the canyon of affliction because it gives us hope and comfort as we persevere for the Glory of God.
Remembering God’s awesome word causes hopeful comfort through affliction.
