On His way to Jerusalem, Jesus encounters 10 people with leprosy (or some other skin disease). He heals them and sends them to a priest to be examined, so their cleansing can be verified. One of them, a Samaritan, returns to thank Jesus and praise God. Here again, Luke highlights the faith of an outsider in contrast to the unbelief of the Jewish leaders.

11 And it came to pass, as he went to Jerusalem, that he passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee. 12 And as he entered into a certain village, there met him ten men that were lepers, which stood afar off: 13 And they lifted up their voices, and said, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us. 14 And when he saw them, he said unto them, Go shew yourselves unto the priests. And it came to pass, that, as they went, they were cleansed. 15 And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God, 16 And fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks: and he was a Samaritan. 17 And Jesus answering said, Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine? 18 There are not found that returned to give glory to God, save this stranger. 19 And he said unto him, Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole.

The Gospel of Luke The Rarity of Gratitude (Luke 17:11–19)

When Jesus was on the way to Jerusalem, he was going along between Samaria and Galilee; and, as he entered a village, ten lepers, who stood far off, met him. They lifted up their voices and said, ‘Jesus, Master, have pity upon us.’ When he saw them, he said, ‘Go, and show yourselves to the priests.’ And as they went they were cleansed. One of them, when he saw that he was cured, turned back, glorifying God with a great voice. He fell on his face at Jesus’ feet and kept on thanking him. And he was a Samaritan. Jesus said, ‘Were the ten not cleansed? The nine—where are they? Were none found to turn back and give glory to God except this foreigner?’ And he said to him, ‘Rise and go! Your faith has made you well.’

I. The Guilt of sin and regret

A. Knowledge of who Jesus is and what he can do
1. And it came to pass, as he went to Jerusalem, that he passed through the midst of Samaria and Galilee. 12 And as he entered into a certain village, there met him ten men that were lepers, which stood afar off: 2. Command the sons of Israel that they send away from the camp every leper and everyone having a discharge and everyone who is unclean because of a dead person.
3 “You shall send away both male and female; you shall send them outside the camp so that they will not defile their camp where I dwell in their midst.” There was no specified distance at which they should stand, but we know that at least one authority laid it down that when to windward of a healthy person, the leper should stand at least fifty yards away. Nothing could better show the utter isolation in which lepers lived. Don’t we fell like that some times? Do you feel like you have a big sign over your chest that says I’m a sinner look at me?

13 And they lifted up their voices, and said, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us.

2.  And they lifted up their voices, and said, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us.
They knew who he was they knew of his reputation , they where asking for healing not pity. They were to LOOK the part, so that no one would mistake them for NORMAL PEOPLE. Add to that, they understood their reality to be because God smote them. How painful to live a life apart from others, believing God had rejected you. The physical agony was accompanied by the mental anguish of Divine rejection. they had no where to go Jesus was their only and last Hope!
B. Walk with faith and Obedience
1.  And when he saw them, he said unto them, Go shew yourselves unto the priests. And it came to pass, that, as they went, they were cleansed. According to the law, people with a skin disease had to be examined by a priest, who would determine whether they were clean or unclean. Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 2 “This shall be the law of the leper in the day of his cleansing. Now he shall be brought to the priest, 3 and the priest shall go out to the outside of the camp. Thus the priest shall look, and if the infection of leprosy has been healed in the leper. 4 then the priest shall give orders to take two live clean birds and cedar wood and a scarlet string and hyssop for the one who is to be cleansed. He told them to turn and find their priest, and show him their cleansing – even before it happened. Only in obedience as they went, did they get their healing. They were to take a step of obedience BEFORE they saw the results of obedience – that is God’s way. When we are only willing to obey when we can see the end
Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,
2 “This shall be the law of the leper in the day of his cleansing. Now he shall be brought to the priest,
He told them to turn and find their priest, and show him their cleansing – even before it happened. Only in obedience as they went, did they get their healing. They were to take a step of obedience BEFORE they saw the results of obedience – that is God’s way. When we are only willing to obey when we can see the end
C. Thankful for Gods mercy and Love
1.  And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God, 16 And fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks: and he was a Samaritan, why did Luke specify he was an Samaritan? he knew how the Jews and the Samaritans felt about each other
1.  And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God, 16 And fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks: and he was a Samaritan, why did Luke specify he was an Samaritan? The people of Samaria were of mixed Israelite and foreign descent, so the Jewish people did not accept them as part of the Jewish community. The hostilities between Jews and Samaritans dated all the way back to the late sixth-century BC. The Samaritans worshiped Yahweh and used a version of the Pentateuch as their Scripture, but they worshipped on Mount Gerizim, not in Jerusalem. Thus the Samaritans were despised by Jews for both ethnic and religious reasons; there was mutual hatred by the Samaritans toward Jews.
2. And Jesus answering said, Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine? 18 There are not found that returned to give glory to God, save this stranger. 19 And he said unto him, Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole. in verse 18 Presumably, then, the other nine lepers were Jews. Jesus marvels at their lack of expressed gratitude.
3 and the priest shall go out to the outside of the camp. Thus the priest shall look, and if the infection of leprosy has been healed in the leper,

The Gospel of Luke The Rarity of Gratitude (Luke 17:11–19)

No story in all the gospels so poignantly shows human ingratitude. The lepers came to Jesus with desperate longing; he cured them; and nine never came back to give thanks. So often, once people have got what they want, they never come back.

In verse 19: thy faith The faith of one of Israel’s loathed neighbors—a Samaritan—is elevated above the faith of Jews. Jesus often associates faith and healing

Are you whole. But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
