“What’s In Your Basket?”

Text: John 6:1-14

July 1, 2007 P.M

I. Introduction

 A. Miracles and the Multitude

  1. Many people followed to see Jesus’ miracles.

  2. People were especially moved by His power to heal. (v. 2)

 B. The Importance of Taking Time Away from the Crowd

  1. “Come apart”Principle: “Come apart so that you don’t fall apart!”

 C. Questions Arose When the Crowds Approached Again

  1. “Where can we buy food for all of these people?”

  2. “How shall we feed this hungry crowd?”

II. Body – Three Principles Found in This Passage

 A. Principle #1 - When Facing Problems, Remember His Power (vv 1-7)

  1. Problems come to ALL.

  2. Problems are often centered around people.  (v 5)

  3. Solutions to problems may require more than we possess.

  4. The Lord saw this problem first (v 5)

   a. He let Philip in on the problem to prove him.

   b. Jesus knew what Philip would do BEFORE Philip answered.

   c. Nothing takes God by surprise.

·         “Has it ever occurred to you that nothing has EVER occurred to Him?”

5. Philip focused on the PROBLEM and planned accordingly.

 6. He should have focused on the POWER of Christ and relaxed.

   a. “…with God, nothing is impossible.” (Lk. 1:37)

 B. Principle #2 – Little Is Much When It is Given To Jesus (vv 8-9)

  1. Andrew finds a young boy

·         “Some focus on problems; others find people with possibilities (solutions).”

  2. A boy…his lunch…the Lord.

   a. Only 5 barley loaves and 2 small fish.

   b. That would be enough to feed 5000 hungry people.

  3. God had often used small things to bless many

   a. (Moses) Moses’ Rod…became a symbol of God’s power (serpent / vanquished armies of the enemy as it was held aloft / Red Sea)

   b. Little lady fixing her last meal gave the 1st portion unto the servant of God - increased the oil, sold it all - paid all her bills, and gave her enough to live off of for a period of time.

   c. (David) Little lad, armed with only a sling and a few stones walked down in the valley; with a giant threatening and cursing His God – “you come to me with a spear and a sword, but I come to you in the name of the Lord….” - became a champion and a king.

  4. When we give what we have to Jesus, He multiplies it.

 C. Principle #3 - We Must Be Willing To Obey Before We are Ready to Be Blessed (v 10)

  1. “Make the men sit down…”

  2. How humbling this sitting and waiting.

   a. Obediently taking their places.

   b. Waiting to be fed from the lunch of a child.

  3. A world of difference from our worshipping of big names and titles

·         (i.e. T.D. Jakes, Paula White, Jack Hayford, Benny Hinn, Joyce Meyer…)

4. Our humble Savior begins by the giving of thanks for the food.

 5. Orderly distribution of the food by the disciples.

   a. There’s nothing disorganized about Jesus.

   b. He will bring order into our lives.

  6. Compare: “as much as they would” to “every one may take a little”

III. Conclusion:

 A. The Effect of the Miracle

  1. The 12 baskets left over: perhaps given to the little boy.

  2. The people recognized that Jesus was the Promised One.

 B. Key Lessons in This Miracle

  1. Hungry souls all about us need the Living Bread.

  2. Jesus wants to use us and what we have to feed them.
