The Church of Jesus Christ
(KJV 1900)
16 And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.
17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-jona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.
18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
19 And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
1) God’s Design – A CHURCH
God’s Design – A CHURCH
To combat sin and it’s destructive force against humanity….
God had a PLAN!
God would defeat SIN, by showing HIS spirit and power in the lives of normal people who would overcome SIN by using HIS power!
2) Church, the.
Definition of the Church.
The New Testament word for “church” is ekklēsia, which means “the called out ones.”
A group or assembly of persons called together for a particular purpose.
The term appears only twice in the Gospels (; ) but frequently in the Book of Acts, most of the letters of Paul, as well as most of the remaining NT writings, especially the Revelation of John.
Jesus replied to Peter, “You are Peter [petros] and on this rock [petra] I will build my church.”
This “ROCK” was at the same time 2 things:
A) It was the revelation of who Jesus was
B) It was Peter – and subsequently all those who would follow him by receiving and accepting this revelation.
But now Peter understood more fully; he fully grasped who Jesus was.
Therefore, he became the first man, the first rock, the foundation upon which the church and all other “living stones” were to be built.
vs. 17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-jona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.
This revelation is a blessing.
A divine revelation from God that changes literally, EVERYTHING!
4) Structure of God’s Church
(KJV 1900)
19 Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God;
20 And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;
21 In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord:
22 In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.
We invert this passage and see it’s construct from the ground up.
vs. 22 - Purpose of the Church
“For” - “an habitation of God, through the Spirit”
Structure:
Jesus Christ - Chief Cornerstone
Apostles and Prophets - foundation
19 Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God;
Prophets - OT
Apostles - NT
20 And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;
· The apostles and prophets are said to be the foundation of the church upon which all future believers or “living stones” are built ().
21 In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord:
22 In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.
GETTING into the church – not by race, wealth or position… but by REVELATION of WHO JESUS IS
Baptism of Water in JESUS name!
Baptism of Spirit – infilling of Holy Ghost!
5) DIVINE PURPOSE of the CHURCH
DIVINE PURPOSE of the CHURCH
22 In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.
A position, relationship, through which God could show HIS POWER
A Refuge from Sin’s power
Sin has NO power in the church!
The Church has POWER (through Jesus) over Sin
That’s why you come feeling weak….
But leave feeling strong!
6) God’s Plan was to do HIS work in and through the CHURCH
Before sin ever entered the world, before the first sacrifice was offered, it was in God’s plan to have a church.
We are not “Plan B” in God’s mind!
· We were not created to be “sinners saved by grace” – that is our fault!
· We were created to be “sons and daughters of God”!
Our fall into sin was a detour to God’s original purpose, but the truly wonderful thing about grace is that we who were undeserving have received more than Adam ever possessed!
· He had life in the tree of life; we have life in Jesus!
· Just like Adam was put to sleep so Eve could be created, Jesus went to “sleep” so the church could be born.
· The Bible says that believers “fall asleep” rather than that they “die” because whenever death is mentioned, sin is there in the background.
But when a believer dies “in Christ,” sin is no longer a factor.
So the grave is not the end for the child of God!
· PEOPLE BACKSLIDE, BUT THE CHURCH DOES NOT! God will have a church whether we are in it or not.
· The outcome of the cross was a Bride for the Lord Jesus … a Bride without spot … or wrinkle!
7) Final destination of the Church
(KJV 1900)
27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.
