Introduction

Greetings...
As most of you know we have been studying “The Glorious Church Of Christ” within the pages of Paul’s letter to the Ephesians in our Prison Epistles Series and so far we have determined..
The body or church of Christ is that which has been eternally planned ( ).
The body or church of Christ is that which has been eternally planned ().
When we are “outside of Christ’s body” we are dead in our trespasses and sins which is why it is so important to be a part of the “body of Christ” ( ).
When we are “outside of Christ’s body” we are dead in our trespasses and sins which is why it is so important to be a part of the “body of Christ” ().
God made it possible to “enter into the eternally planned church” through the blood of Christ and His Law it created which unified all the peoples both Jew and Gentile ( ).
God made it possible to “enter into the eternally planned church” through the blood of Christ and His Law it created which unified all the peoples both Jew and Gentile ().
This “unity of the spirit” keeps the bond of peace through adhering to the “calling to which you have been called” through proper leadership in the “The Glorious Church Of Christ” ().
This “unity of the spirit” keeps the bond of peace through adhering to the “calling to which you have been called” through proper leadership in the “The Glorious Church Of Christ” ( ).
Those under proper leadership that are “made new in Christ” are expected to walk “not in futility of mind” but “according to truth () and love () through sacrifice and submission to one another.”
It’s this sacrifice and submission that Paul is going to spend some time discussing through three different avenues.
First is our lesson this evening, which is the husband and wife relationship.
Second, is the child parent relationship.
Third, is the slave and master relationship.
Each of these tie to a broader spiritual truth concerning the church of Christ however...
It is here then, that we begin looking at our lesson.

Biblical Wives Submit To Their Husbands

Eph
Ephesians 5:22–24 ESV
22 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands.

Why are wives to submit to their husbands?

Woman was created in subjection to the man by order of creation.
Woman was created in subjection to the man.
1 Timothy 2:12–13 ESV
12 I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet. 13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve;
1 Timothy 2:13 ESV
13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve;
1 Tim
1 Corinthians 11:3 NKJV
3 But I want you to know that the head of every man is Christ, the head of woman is man, and the head of Christ is God.
1
Woman was further placed in “need” of man because of Eve’s sin.
Genesis 3:16 NKJV
16 To the woman He said: “I will greatly multiply your sorrow and your conception; In pain you shall bring forth children; Your desire shall be for your husband, And he shall rule over you.”
1 Timothy 2:14 ESV
14 and Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor.
1 Timothy 2:14 ESV
14 and Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor.
Women are an example of man’s submission to Christ.
1 Corinthians 11:3 NKJV
3 But I want you to know that the head of every man is Christ, the head of woman is man, and the head of Christ is God.
In the same way woman submits to man, man submits to woman.
"What if, according to God, man’s most difficult and important task — that he needs help with — is figuring out how to submit to God? What if God created woman to model that most difficult task for man in order to instruct and remind him of the beauty and blessing of submission to God? As she submits to her head, he learns how to submit to his head. Now my role as a woman (as a submitter) escalates in importance. And if I do not answer my call as a woman, what are the consequences?"

How are wives to submit to their husbands?

Love your husband.
Older women are to teach the younger women to love their husbands.
Don’t love him like the way the world says to love him…but like God says.
1 Corinthians 13:4–8 ESV
4 Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant 5 or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; 6 it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. 7 Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 8 Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away.
Let those that have learned this already teach you how, it isn’t something that is just simply “known” but “learned.”
Titus 2:4 ESV
4 and so train the young women to love their husbands and children,
No woman will submit to her husband if she doesn’t understand how to love him.
Respect your husband.
The word respect in and found in means…to revere and be in awe of.
Ephesians 5:33 ESV
33 However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.
Yield to your husband’s ultimate advice.
You don’t have to agree with his decision but you must respect his authority as long as his decision is biblical.
If he loves you like he should he will put you second to God only in every decision he makes.
Eph 5:25
Ephesians 5:25 ESV
25 Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her,

Summery

Wives who understand their role and the expectations God has for them are the greatest blessing any man can have here on earth.
It isn’t money, fame, or fortune…it’s a righteous wife by his side.
Proverbs 31:10 ESV
10 An excellent wife who can find? She is far more precious than jewels.

Biblical Husbands Have Authority Over Their Wives

Ephesians 5:25–27 ESV
25 Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, 26 that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, 27 so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.
Ephesians 5:28–30 ESV
28 In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, 30 because we are members of his body.

Ephesians 5:25–33 ESV
25 Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, 26 that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, 27 so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. 28 In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, 30 because we are members of his body. 31 “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” 32 This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church. 33 However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.
Ephesians 5:31–33 ESV
31 “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” 32 This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church. 33 However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.

Why are husbands to have authority?

God commanded it.
Ephesians 5:23 ESV
23 For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior.
Eph
God created it this way.
If a husband isn’t the authority of the home he has put his wife in an impossible and most likely sinful position.
It’s hard for there to be “no leader” in the home even if the wife is doing her best not to be.
1 Peter 3:1–2 ESV
1 Likewise, wives, be subject to your own husbands, so that even if some do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives, 2 when they see your respectful and pure conduct.
Husbands need to rule their house as God created them to do.
No husband & wife relationship will work like it is supposed to without this being understood.

How are husbands to exercise that authority?

Love your wife.
This is “agape” love not just family love.
Eph 5:25-
Ephesians 5:25 ESV
25 Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her,
Notice husbands that if you are loving your wife as you should you will be striving to...
Give yourself up to her.
Keep her without spot or wrinkle, holy and without blemish before the Father.
Present her, to God, with
Husbands are to lead by example.
Joshua 24:15 ESV
15 And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”
Jeremiah 23:2 ESV
2 Therefore thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, concerning the shepherds who care for my people: “You have scattered my flock and have driven them away, and you have not attended to them. Behold, I will attend to you for your evil deeds, declares the Lord.
Husbands are to teach God’s Word.
2 Timothy 2:2 LEB
2 and the things which you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, entrust these things to faithful people who will be competent to teach others also.
Husbands are to encourage.
Colossians 3:19 ESV
19 Husbands, love your wives, and do not be harsh with them.
Col 3:18
Husbands are to make the ultimate decisions.
This means they lean heavily on their faithful wife’s advice and will always strive to take that into consideration when they make decisions that are best for their wives and the home.
Most of the time those decisions will be in unison with each other if both are faithful but sometimes they won’t be.
It’s the husbands responsibility to make decisions that are spiritually and other wise best for his wife and home.
1 Peter 3:7 ESV
7 Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered.
1 Pt 3:7

Summery

In the same way a man can have no better life without a faithful wife, no wife can have a better life without a faithful man.
Once again neither riches, earthly glory, or the like will make a woman truly happen but a faithful husband.
Deuteronomy 24:5 NKJV
5 “When a man has taken a new wife, he shall not go out to war or be charged with any business; he shall be free at home one year, and bring happiness to his wife whom he has taken.

Conclusion

When it comes to the husband and wife relationship we must always keep in mind, our God is the only third party in a marriage who can make it work.
Create a spiritual hedge of protection in your marriage.

Isaiah 59:1–2 ESV
1 Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save, or his ear dull, that it cannot hear; 2 but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear.
Philippians 2:6–7 ESV
6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.
