Text:

INTRODUCTION:

When one is yielded to God and relies upon the anointing of the Spirit wonderful things take place!  There is a progressive, personal sanctification that is manifested in the fruit of the Spirit.  (Gal.5:22,23)   There is the teaching of spiritual truth s that come only by the guidance and illumination of the Spirit. (John 16:12-14).  The deep things of God can only be known by those who rely upon the teaching ministry of the Holy Spirit (I Cor. 2:9,10)  The Spirit enables the believer to apply the truths of the Word of God to His or her particular situation.  The Spirit also enables the believer to properly worship and love God (John 4:24).

In addition to all the personal blessings derived from reliance upon the anointing of the Spirit, there are the blessings of the Spirit’s anointing in ministry to the entire body of Christ.    The natural and spiritual gifts one possesses for ministry are dependant upon the power of the Spirit if they are to be excercised effectively.

Jesus likened the anointing of the Spirit to Rivers of living water flowing from within the beliver (Jn. 7:38)  The “rivers of living water” speaks of divine energy, energy that enables the believer to serve God effectively.

One may possess great spiritual gifts and yet not be used of God if there is not a reliance upon His Anointing.  On the other hand, one may have few gifts and yet be greatly used of God because of a reliance upon the anointing.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

Anointed, mashach (mah-shahch),  means to anoint, to rub with oil, especialy in order to consecrate someone or something.  It appears almost 70 times, mashach refers to the custom of rubbing or smearing with sacred oil to consecrate holy persons or holy  things…. The most important derivative of mashach is mashiyach (Messiah), “anointed one, His title came  to be “Jesus the Messiah.”  Messiah was translated into Greek as christos, thus His designation, “Jesus Christ.”

T.S.  This morning our focus will be a discussion of the terms: Anointing, Anointing of the Spirit, and anointing of God.

Smith's Dict. # 323   Anointing,

in Holy Scripture, is either,

I. Material--with oil--or

II. Spiritual--with the Holy Ghost

I. MATERIAL.—With Oil.

1.     Ordinary. Anointing the body or head with oil was a

common practice with the Jews, as with other

      Oriental nations.

            a.  Deut 28:40;  Ruth 3:3;  Mica 6:15

Anointing the head with oil or ointment seems also to have been a mark of respect sometimes paid by a host to his guests.

b.  Luke 7:46 and Psal 23:5

2.     Official. It was a rite of inauguration into each of the

three typical offices of the Jewish commonwealth.

a.     Prophets were occasionally anointed to

      their office,

1)    1Kin 19:16 - and were called messiahs,

      or anointed.

2)  1Chr 16:22;    Psal 105:15

b.     Priests,

1)  at the first institution of the Levitical

priesthood, were all anointed to their offices,   Exod 40:15; Numb 3:3

2)    at the second institution anointing

seems to have been specially reserved   for the high priest,

# Exod 29:29; Levi 16:32

so that "the priest that is anointed,"

# Levi 4:3  is generally thought to

mean the high priest.

c.     Kings. Anointing was the principal and divinely-appointed ceremony in the inauguration of the Jewish Kings.

# 1Sam 9:16; 10:1; 1Kin 1:34,39

The rite was sometimes performed more than once. David was anointed three times.

d.     Inanimate objects also were anointed with oil,

in token of their being set apart for religious

service. Thus Jacob anointed a pillar at

      Bethel. # Gene 31:13; Exod 30:26-28

e.     Anointing could also signify appointment to a special office or function in the purposes of God.

f.       Also in the O.T. the anointing symbolized special endowment  for ministry to God.

Exodus 28:4-1 / I Sam.9:26-10:9 /I Kings 1:34, 35  / Is.61-3

3.  Ecclesiastical.

a.     Anointing with oil is prescribed by St. James to

be used for the recovery of the sick.

Jame 5:14

b.     Practiced by the twelve (anointing with oil)

Mark 6:13

II. SPIRITUAL.—With Holy Spirit.

1.     In the Old Testament

a.     Anointing was a TITLE of the Deliverer who was promised:

1)    Messiah, or

2)    Anointed,

# Psal 2:2; Dani 9:25,26

b.     The nature of his anointing is described to be

      spiritual, with the Holy Ghost.

# Isai 61:1    see Luke 4:18

2.     In the New Testament

a.     Jesus of Nazareth is shown to be the “Messiah,” or “Christ” or “Anointed,” of the Old Testament,  # John 1:41; Acts 9:22; 17:2,3; 18:4,28

b.     Historical fact of his being anointed with the

Holy Ghost is asserted and recorded.

# John 1:32,33; Acts 4:27; 10:38

c.     Christ was anointed as prophet, priest and king.

3.     Spiritual anointing

a.     Spiritual Anointing with the Holy Ghost is

conferred also upon Christians by God.

# 2Cor 1:21

b.     Practical Definition of "Anointing.

1)    The term “Anointing” expresses the

sanctifying influences of the Holy Spirit upon Christians who are priests and kings unto God.

III.     PRACTICAL CONCEPTIONS CONCERNING

       “ANOINTING”

1.  Anointing Of the body

                        a.   Requires your obedience

Ru 3:3   Go wash yourself and put on perfume. Change your clothes, and go down to the threshing floor. But don't let him see you until he has finished eating and drinking.

Es 2:12 12  Each young woman's turn came to go in to King Ahasuerus after she had completed twelve months' preparation, according to the regulations for the women, for thus were the days of their preparation apportioned: six months with oil of myrrh, and six months with perfumes and preparations for beautifying women.

NOTE: ANOINTING  WAS APPLIED TO:   (Da 10:3)

1. The head  - # Ps 23:5 Ec 9:8

2. The face   - # Ps 104:15

3. The feet    - # Lu 7:38,39 Joh 12:3

4. The eyes  - # Re 3:18

                        b.  Results in Blessing and Refreshing

Ps 92:10 - although the wicked flourish like weeds, there is only eternal destruction ahead of them.  8  But the Lord continues forever, exalted in the heavens,  9  while his enemies--all evil-doers--shall be scattered. 10  But you have made me as strong as a wild bull. How refreshed I am by your blessings! {92:10 [by your blessings,] literally, "anointed with fresh oil."}

Ps 104: 14  You make the grass for cattle  and vegetables for the use of man.  You make food grow from the earth.  15  You give us wine that makes happy hearts.  And you give us olive oil that makes our faces shine.  You give us bread that gives us strength.

c.     Other Scriptures:  Psalms 141:5 Pr 27:9,16 Ec

      9:8 So 1:3 4:10 Isa 57:9 Am 6:6 Mic 6:15

2.     Concept: The “anointing” requires obedience

which results in a changed life full of blessings and refreshing.”

a.     Lessons:

1)    We must “wash” ourselves with Christ and “put on the perfume” the oil of anointing… RUN TO IT, PUT IT ON!

2)    We must allow Christ to “make our face to shine, “ to change us!  Completely from the inside out.

b.     Exhortation:

1)    Obedience is a conscious decision.

2)    We must be willing to sacrifice to get the anointing and to keep it…

2.  Anointing Of guests:

a.  Ch 28:15 - for medicinal purpose

b.  Luke 7:46 - Sign of respect

3.  Anointing Of the sick

                        a.  - In Body

Mr 6:13 -  And they cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many who were sick, and healed [them].

Lu 10:34 -  The Samaritan went to him and poured olive oil and wine {olive oil and wine Oil and wine were used like medicine to soften and clean wounds.} on his wounds and bandaged them. He put the hurt man on his own donkey and took him to an inn. At the inn, the Samaritan took care of him. (ICB)

                        b.  -In Body & Spirit

Jas 5:14  Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him,  anointing  him with oil in the name of the Lord:  15  and the prayer of faith shall save him that is sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, it shall be forgiven him.  16  Confess therefore your sins one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The supplication of a righteous man availeth much in its working.

                        c.  -In Spirit

Re 3:17 - 20  Because thou sayest, I am rich, and have gotten riches, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art the wretched one and miserable and poor and blind and naked:  18  I counsel thee to buy of me gold refined by fire, that thou mayest become rich; and white garments, that thou mayest clothe thyself, and [that] the shame of thy nakedness be not made manifest; and eyesalve to anoint thine eyes, that thou mayest see. 19  As many as I love, I reprove and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.  20  Behold, I stand at the door and knock: if any man hear my voice and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.

4.  Anointing Of the dead.

a. -Preparation For Burial

#Mt 26:12 For in that she poured this ointment upon my body, she did it to prepare me for burial.  Also Mr 14:8

#Lu 7:37,38,46 Joh 11:2 12:3

6.     Anointing Of lives (The reason for the Anointing)

                        a.  To Proclaim the gospel,

                                    b.  To minister to the broken hearted,

Summary:   The “Anointing of God” is experienced by obedient Christians and demonstrated by a boldness to witness and testify of Christ. Act 2:1-4.  Not as a mystical blessing to demonstrate how spiritual a person is.

Application:  Delivered, set free, salvation, walkin in refreshing, blessing… experience a changed countenance….

The anointing IS the Fire of God in a persons life that literally changes the way they look at themselves, the lost, and yes… the church.

Do you want a changed life this morning…? Do want God’s Holy Anointing this morning?
