Sometimes the reason people do not see Jesus is that we do not show them a clear vision od Him. Othere times it is because they misunderstand what they see.

Intro
This chapter starts off with two very delightful events, a party and Palm Sunday more accurately The Triumphal Entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. The first was distinguish by the presence of Jesus a Lazarus whom Jesus raised from the dead. There is also a dispute over perfume poured on Jesus feel rather than selling it a giving the money to the poor. The second was distinguished by palm branched being spread in His path and the people shouting "Hosanna" and "blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord." Here there is also a dispute over what good the strategem of their plot to kill Jesus.
Later some Greeks will come for the purpose of seeing Jesus. So, why is it that the people that are here now and have seen all that Jesus has done really do not see Jesus? Why is we are just as misled? Communication is hard and no matter what you say others may hear or feel it differently. Did Jesus want a confrontation and death? No. But, His death was necessary for them and us. So, did this misunderstanding come because the people were predestined to act as they did or did God have a bigger plan then and now and all of us are a part of it. So lets start by looking at some reasons why they misunderstood and maybe we will see our own problems and what we can do about it.
Why is we are just as misled?
I. V.1-19 Missed Placed Priorities
I. V.1-19 Missed Placed Priorities
A. V. 1-8 Greed and Selfishness
1. Setting V.1-2 Place and Event
12:1 Time - Six days before the Passover,
Person - Jesus
Act - arrived at Bethany,
Specific - where Lazarus lived
whom Jesus has raised from the
dead
:2 Inference - Here a dinner was held in Jesus'
honor
Act - Martha served
while Lazarus was among those reclining at
the table with Him
table with Him
2. Spontaneous Love
:3 Act - Then Mary took
Specific - about a pint of pure nard,
an expensive perfume;
she poured it on Jesus feet
she poured it
on Jesus feet
AND
wiped His feet with her hair
AND
the house was filled with the fragrance of the
perfume.
A spontaneous display of love and emotion.
3. V. 4-6 Paralyzing Greed
:4 Contrast - BUT
Person - one of His disciples, Judas Iscariot
Specific - who was later to betray Him,
Act - Objected,
:5 Quote - "Why wasn't this perfume sold
AND
the money given to the poor?"
While Mary is lavishing love on Jesus Judas is arguing against the use of the perfume because of its money value. Saying why wasn't it used for the poor. It is always so nice and religious sounding to talk about the poor but the issue here is not the poor but the honoring of Jesus. We should provide for the poor but not neglect the proper honor to Jesus. The contrast here is between honor and cause. Mary honored Jesus in His coming death. Judas was the one that helped to cause His death.
:6 Explain - He did not say this because he cared about the poor
the poor
Contrast - But because he was a thief;
Action - as keeper of the money bag,
he used to help himself to what was put
into it.
John gives his explanation for why Judas had this complaint. Giving money is the least way to show charity. Giving of ones self and time is the greatest gift to charity
4. V. 7-8 Overriding Command
:7 Command - "Leaver her alone,"
Response - Jesus said.
Purpose - "It was intended that she should save this perfume for the day of my burial.
perfume for the day of my burial.
:8 Reason - You will always have the poor among
you.
Contrast - but you will not always have me."
Contrast - but you will not always have me."
Don't sacrifice the eternal for the immediate
B. V. 9-11 Wrong Purpose
V. 9 Time - Meanwhile
People - a large crowd of Jews found out
Specific - that Jesus was there
Act - and came
Reason - not only because of Him but also to see
Lazarus,
Specific - whom He had raised from the dead.
dead.
The people came to see and stare but not really to hear and believe. These are the common people. The motive here seems to be curiosity the word had spread around that Jesus and Lazarus, whom Jesus raised from the dead, were in the same place. Not wrong just off the mark for what they needed. It is the belief of some that it makes no difference why they come just get them there. However after they have seen the man raised from the grave they still did not follow Jesus but later some cried crucify.
:10 Conclusion - So the chief priests made plans to kill Lazarus as well,
Lazarus as well,
:11 Reason - for on account of him many of the Jews were going over to Jesus
going over to Jesus
AND
putting their faith in Him.
The sacrifice of one to save many now has set a claim on another. In this type of sacrifice for the good of the most, no one wins. Eventually it all comes back to we will kill any who appose us. They thought that some coming to faith in Jesus meant a mass revival and all would eventually leave the ranks of the Pharisees.
C. V.12-19 Wrong Standard
:12 Time - The next day
Group - the great crowd that had come for the feast
Act - heard that Jesus was on His way to Jerusalem.
:13 People - They
Act - took palm branches
AND
went out to meet Him
shouting
Quote - "Hosanna" (save now)
Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!"
Lord!"
"Blessed is the King of Israel!"
What symbolism and joy. The palms as the symbol of service for the New Moon. A mark of triumph to a victor or king. Names save now, the Lord (Messiah) and King of Israel.
:14 Act - Jesus found a young donkey
AND
sat upon it,
:15 Manner as it is written,
Command - "Do not be afraid O Daughter of Zion:
Pronouncement - see, your king is coming seated on a donkey's colt."
donkey's colt."
Prophecy is fulfilled, ,
:16 Denial - At first His disciples did not understand all this.
this.
Time - Only later after Jesus was glorified did they
realize these things had been written about Him
AND
that they had done these things to Him.
Even the disciples were distracted by what they wanted rather than what Jesus was teaching. Had they studied the word or listened to Jesus teachings they would have been much better prepared.
:17 Time - Now
People - the crowd
Specific - that was with Him when He
called Lazarus from the tomb
AND
raised him from the dead
Act - continued to spread the word.
What was it they spread? What people heard was the story of Lazarus. We often get caught up in the flash and forget the real meaning, the lesson or its consequence for our lives.
:18 People - Many people,
Reason - because they had heard that He had given this miraculous sign
miraculous sign
Act - went out to meet Him.
We love the loaves and the fishes. We get excited by a man being raised from the dead. Healings are a great topic of conversation BUT what really changes our lives. Some were changed by faith believing Jesus was the Christ. Some saw the Son of God behind the works, signs and miracles. But most even the disciples that were close to Jesus did not see the life changing message until after the resurrection and the coming of the Spirit
i.e The Road to Emmaus, 3000 saved on the day of Pentecost.
:19 Act - So the Pharisees said to one another
Pronouncement - "See, this is getting us nowhere.
Exclaim. - Look how the whole world has gone after Him!"
