The Foundation

1 Kings 2:1 ESV
When David’s time to die drew near, he commanded Solomon his son, saying,

Understanding our Limitations and Mortality
David was at the end of his life
Job 14:1–6 ESV
“Man who is born of a woman is few of days and full of trouble. He comes out like a flower and withers; he flees like a shadow and continues not. And do you open your eyes on such a one and bring me into judgment with you? Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? There is not one. Since his days are determined, and the number of his months is with you, and you have appointed his limits that he cannot pass, look away from him and leave him alone, that he may enjoy, like a hired hand, his day.
God is calling you to confront a friend about a sin…you are afraid because you dont want to lose a friendship—and that is understandable—noone wants to hurt a friend. But hear me, if you love your friend—you wont let them live comfortably in their sin. Sin destroys us from the inside out. tells us that our sin seperates us from God. Meaning that we arent able to experience God like we were created to when we are living in sin. So if you really love your friend, you will be willing to hurt their feelings by confronting them about it. THIS DOES NOT GIVE YOU PERMISSION TO BE A BULLY! God calls us to speak truth in love…before you go to someone to confront them, you better be darn sure that you have repented first.
God is calling some of you to share the gospel with a classmate—you developed a relationship with someone in one of you classes and you know they arent a believer. But you havent shared with them because you are afraid. God is calling you to step up tonight.
God is calling some of you to surrender—you have been half-way following Jesus. You havent surrendered your life to Jesus because you think that you will fail Him. Guess what…you will

Job
Death is a surgeon. Just like surgeons hurt and harm the anatomy—knowing that death is around the corner helps to focus on what is most important in life....It helps us to invest our lives in the right place.

The Fundamental

If we want to invest our lives in God’s plan for our life we have to practice the fundamentals.
1 Kings 2:2–3 ESV
“I am about to go the way of all the earth. Be strong, and show yourself a man, and keep the charge of the Lord your God, walking in his ways and keeping his statutes, his commandments, his rules, and his testimonies, as it is written in the Law of Moses, that you may prosper in all that you do and wherever you turn,
1 kings 2:2-
What are the fundamentals?
Called to Courage
Live Courageously
“Be strong, and show yourself a man...”
What was God calling Solomon to? He was being called to take the seat of his father, David. He was being called to lead God’s Covenant people to do all that God had called them to do. Why was this going to take courage? Because Soloman was going to have to lead people to God’s perfect plan in an imperfect world.
The people of God were called to be the ambassadors of God’s Kingdom. Yet at every turn they face obstacles. Other world leaders hated Israel and Israel’s God and wanted to destroy them. And Soloman was going to have to lead God’s people through those obsticles.
But this was not the greatest challenge. The greatest challenge was not any enemy “out there.” It was the enemy within their own ranks, their own hearts. David understood that the greatest enemy that Soloman would face was his own sinful heart. This is why he was calling him to live courageously.
David was well aquanted with the enemy of his own sin. David prayed things like this:
Psalm 6:1–3 ESV
O Lord, rebuke me not in your anger, nor discipline me in your wrath. Be gracious to me, O Lord, for I am languishing; heal me, O Lord, for my bones are troubled. My soul also is greatly troubled. But you, O Lord—how long?
Psalm 6 ESV
To the choirmaster: with stringed instruments; according to The Sheminith. A Psalm of David. O Lord, rebuke me not in your anger, nor discipline me in your wrath. Be gracious to me, O Lord, for I am languishing; heal me, O Lord, for my bones are troubled. My soul also is greatly troubled. But you, O Lord—how long? Turn, O Lord, deliver my life; save me for the sake of your steadfast love. For in death there is no remembrance of you; in Sheol who will give you praise? I am weary with my moaning; every night I flood my bed with tears; I drench my couch with my weeping. My eye wastes away because of grief; it grows weak because of all my foes. Depart from me, all you workers of evil, for the Lord has heard the sound of my weeping. The Lord has heard my plea; the Lord accepts my prayer. All my enemies shall be ashamed and greatly troubled; they shall turn back and be put to shame in a moment.
Psalm 6:6–7 CSB
I am weary from my groaning; with my tears I dampen my bed and drench my couch every night. My eyes are swollen from grief; they grow old because of all my enemies.
psalm 6
Psalm 38 ESV
A Psalm of David, for the memorial offering. O Lord, rebuke me not in your anger, nor discipline me in your wrath! For your arrows have sunk into me, and your hand has come down on me. There is no soundness in my flesh because of your indignation; there is no health in my bones because of my sin. For my iniquities have gone over my head; like a heavy burden, they are too heavy for me. My wounds stink and fester because of my foolishness, I am utterly bowed down and prostrate; all the day I go about mourning. For my sides are filled with burning, and there is no soundness in my flesh. I am feeble and crushed; I groan because of the tumult of my heart. O Lord, all my longing is before you; my sighing is not hidden from you. My heart throbs; my strength fails me, and the light of my eyes—it also has gone from me. My friends and companions stand aloof from my plague, and my nearest kin stand far off. Those who seek my life lay their snares; those who seek my hurt speak of ruin and meditate treachery all day long. But I am like a deaf man; I do not hear, like a mute man who does not open his mouth. I have become like a man who does not hear, and in whose mouth are no rebukes. But for you, O Lord, do I wait; it is you, O Lord my God, who will answer. For I said, “Only let them not rejoice over me, who boast against me when my foot slips!” For I am ready to fall, and my pain is ever before me. I confess my iniquity; I am sorry for my sin. But my foes are vigorous, they are mighty, and many are those who hate me wrongfully. Those who render me evil for good accuse me because I follow after good. Do not forsake me, O Lord! O my God, be not far from me! Make haste to help me, O Lord, my salvation!
And there are many other times when David had to pray asking God to help him face his own sin.
psalm 38
And if you are wondering if we can expect this same struggle just listen to the words of Jesus to us:
John 16:33 NIV
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
God does not call us to perfection, he calls us to a continued pursuit.
Even when we are afraid to do what God has called you to do because of what it will cost you? God calls you to take heart—to step up—because Jesus has already given us victory.
God is calling you to confront a friend about a sin…you are afraid because you dont want to lose a friendship—and that is understandable—noone wants to hurt a friend. If we want to invest our lives in God’s will for our lives we have to understand the foundation of why we need to invest in God’s economy, we have to practice the fundamentals that God has set out for us—to live courageously.
Lastly we have to understand the Function of investing our lives in God’s will for our life.

The Fruit

What does investing our lives in God’s will do?
God Promises His Provision
When we courageously pursue God’s plan for our life, it leads to God’s provision and prosperity
God Promises
1 Kings 2:4 ESV
that the Lord may establish his word that he spoke concerning me, saying, ‘If your sons pay close attention to their way, to walk before me in faithfulness with all their heart and with all their soul, you shall not lack a man on the throne of Israel.’

1 kings 2:
David tells Soloman that if he pursues God’s will and lives under His Law, it leads to provision and prosperity.
David reminds Soloman about a promise that God made to him in 2 Samuel 7:
When we courageously pursue God’s plan for our life, it leads to God’s provision and prosperity.
Pslam 1
Psalm 1 CSB
How happy is the one who does not walk in the advice of the wicked or stand in the pathway with sinners or sit in the company of mockers! Instead, his delight is in the Lord’s instruction, and he meditates on it day and night. He is like a tree planted beside flowing streams that bears its fruit in its season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers. The wicked are not like this; instead, they are like chaff that the wind blows away. Therefore the wicked will not stand up in the judgment, nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous. For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked leads to ruin.
1 Corinthians 10:31 CSB
So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God.
The man in Pslam 1 loves God’s instructions…God’s law. He meditates on it 24 hours a day, seven days a week. And he delightfully obeys all that God has called him to do…He totally invests himself in God’s will for His life…and not his own will…and what’s the result? “Whatever he does he prospers...”
The function—or the result—of investing your
