Second leading cause of death, after accidents, for ages 10-18
More teenagers and young adults die from suicide than from cancer, heart disease, AIDS, birth defects, stroke, pneumonia, influenza, and chronic lung disease, COMBINED.
4 out of 5 suicides had clear warning signs
Each day in our nation, there are an average of over 3,041 attempts by young people grades 9-12.  If these percentages are additionally applied to grades 7 & 8, the numbers would be higher.

Suicide in the Bible

Reasons for Suicide in the Bible
Feelings are at the core of a human’s desire to end life
Guilt - Judas
Defeat & Loss - Saul
Defiance - Samson
Failure - Jailer in Acts (didn’t actually commit suicide)
We have all probably felt these feelings before...
Most of the time, we can move on and dig ourselves out of the ditch
For some, they can’t seem to find a way out of the darkness, so they believe the lie that the only way out is to end.
Desire to Die in the Bible
The desire to die is far greater than actual suicides in the Bible.
Elijah after Jezebel put a bounty out for his death
Job after he lost everything except his wife that told him to “curse God and die”
FUTURE: Mankind in the tribulation
Revelation 9:6 ESV
6 And in those days people will seek death and will not find it. They will long to die, but death will flee from them.
How do we fight this spirit of suicide that is coming after us and those around us?

1. This is a Spiritual Fight

Ephesians 6:12 ESV
12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.
Eph 6:12
John 10:10 ESV
10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.
I don’t believe that Satan has the power to actually kill a person, but what he can do is heavily influence a person to take action.
Jesus has the Keys of Death!
Rev 1:17-18
Revelation 1:17–18 ESV
17 When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. But he laid his right hand on me, saying, “Fear not, I am the first and the last, 18 and the living one. I died, and behold I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of Death and Hades.
Understanding this is a spiritual battle means that the dark thoughts, the depression, the weakness is not going to be fixed by physical means.
THE CURE: spiritual renewal that only comes through a relationship with God
Relationship will bring revelation of...

2. Find Your Cause, Know Your Value

Kate Spade

Committed suicide earlier this year in June
She had everything the world says you need to be satisfied:
Husband (24 years), Daughter (13 years), Money, Influence
Prior to death, she struggled with depression for 6 years

3. Know Your Value

The last 10 months she was most likely “self-medicating” by drinking

Everyone In Here Has Purpose

I was conceived out of wedlock. I was not a planned baby. I was absolutely a surprise.
It would be very easy for me to think that I am a mistake, that I have no value or purpose in life. That’s what the enemy wants me to think.
When I seek God and ask Him what He thinks, I find out that I do have a purpose, and while I may have been a surprise to the world, I was never a surprise to God.
You may be thinking that you are a mistake, that you’ve made a mistake, but there’s nothing you can do that will put you outside of the Father’s love.
Jeremiah 1:5 ESV
5 “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.”
You may be thinking that you are a mistake, that you’ve made a mistake, but there’s nothing you can do that will put you outside of the Father’s love.
Romans 8:35 ESV
35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword?
Romans 8:38–39 ESV
38 For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Before you were even formed, God knew you! - not about you, but He knew you!
Remember:
Jeremiah 29:11 ESV
11 For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.
Genesis 2:7 ESV
7 then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.
God has plans to prosper you and give you a hope and future -
God breathed His own breath into your lungs -
God made you in His own image -
He knit you together in the womb -
You have value!
You have value!
You were bought with a price, a precious price. You are called a child of God, He loves you more than you even love yourself. He breathed His very breath into your lungs. He fashioned you out of His own image.
Psalm 25:4 ESV
4 Make me to know your ways, O Lord; teach me your paths.
God Values the Birds
Matthew 6:26 ESV
26 Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?
God Cares About a 1/2 Cent Sparrow, and Cares About You More
Matthew 10:29–31 ESV
29 Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. 30 But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. 31 Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.

3. Take Action

Carry Hope

4 out of 5 suicides had clear warning signs
Are you viewing life through the eyes of Jesus? Are you able to see beyond the surface of someone, past the standard “I’m okay” response?
The world is hurting and needs to know that they have value, purpose, are loved!

Warning Signs

Talking or discussions about wanting to die
Researching ways to kill oneself
References to hopelessness or feeling as if life has no purpose
Feelings of being trapped or in unbearable pain
Feelings of being a burden to others
Increased alcohol or drug use
Sleep changes; either excessive sleep or insomnia
Isolation and withdrawal
Expressions of rage or a desire to seek revenge
Anxiety, agitation or recklessness
Extreme mood swings
If you know someone that is going through one of these symptoms - TALK TO THEM.

Myths

Suicidal people are out for attention & I don’t want to give them ideas
mental health professionals say that if you're worried about someone, the best thing to do is to talk with them openly. Asking someone if they're having suicidal thoughts will not put those thoughts in his or her head; talking about it, as hard as it is, may help that person break the tension and secrecy that feeds into suicidal behavior. And, above all, talking helps that person get help.
Someone that is suicidal is going to kill themselves eventually
As survivor Ken Baldwin told The New Yorker magazine in 2003 of his attempt to kill himself by jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge, the regret was immediate: "I instantly realized that everything in my life that I’d thought was unfixable was totally fixable — except for having just jumped."

// Closing

John 14:6 ESV
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
Jesus says...
This phrase comes as Jesus is giving His final words to the disciples before He is going to be taken to the cross. He goes on to say:
The Holy Spirit (Comforter) is coming -
Peace has been given to you, don’t be afraid -
Jesus is the Vine, he will sustain you -
You will have trouble, but do not fear the world, Jesus has already overcome the world -
Even in His last moments Jesus did not want to die. What led Him to death was His overwhelming love for us. He chose to sacrifice Himself because He was the only One that could be that sacrifice.

Call to Salvation

The title of tonight’s message is: How to Die
There are some that need to die:
to sin
to bad habits
to bad thoughts
While the enemy came to steal, kill, and destroy.
Jesus came to give life, and give it to the fullest!
Will you receive it?
