Thankful for Deliverance

Explanation: The psalmist has been dealing with some type of illness that had brought him to the point of death. He had received healing from the hand of God, and he is praising and thanking God. The psalmist understands that God is responsible for his well-being. The psalmist gives God the credit for “drawing him up,” for healing him, and for “restoring him to life”

Argument: The Psalmist is giving God the glory for the work He has done. The Psalmist also sees his personal healing as a victory over those who are opposed to God.

Application: Have you thanked God for His power of Deliverance in your life? Be careful not to overlook His blessings. We may not be sick unto death, but God is constantly showering blessings of peace upon us. If nothing else, thank Him for saving you!

Thank God for His Mercy ()

Explanation: The psalmist is praising and thanking God in verse 4 because he had experienced God’s mercy after a time of God’s anger. He contrasts God’s anger with God’s favor by remarking that His disfavor is brief, but His favor is everlasting. And the Psalmist acknowledges that he was in the wrong with his attitude and was deserving of chastisement. That is what makes God’s Mercy so amazing - we are all guilty

Argument: It is often in times of prosperity that we are quick to think God is not as important. When we live in His blessing and favor, we can fall into forgetting the real source of our goodness. In our sinful flesh we can start taking credit for that which God has provided.

Before God allowed the psalmist to suffer, he was so secure that he felt he could never be shaken. The security apparently became a source of overconfidence even though it was the Lord who showed his favor and made him like a strong mountain (5:12). In other words, the blessing of God gave him a false sense of security. The suffering began when the Lord hid his face

Application: many of us need to confess the sin of self-confidence in our lives. Though difficult, we need to remain humble. If we don’t do it on our own, the LORD God may humble us in His way

Share your story of Deliverance / answered Prayer as a form of Thanksgiving ()

Explanation: The Psalmist is crying out to God to let him live. His basis for his request is that he will give public praise to God if he is allowed to live. Although God is not manipulated or fooled by the psalmist’s logic that dead people can’t praise God, the Lord grants the request. The prayer is answered because the fundamental desire is a reverence for God’s name.

Argument: As believers who have been blessed by the LORD, we have an obligation to share our story. We have the privilege and the responsibility to brag on God. He is the One who is worthy of praise and thanksgiving.

Application: Let our heart cry be like the Psalmist in v. 12, that we would “sing God’s praise and not be silent.”
