What Is Envy?
ENVY, enʹvi (קִנֽאָה, ḳin’āh; ζῆλος, zḗlos, φθόνος, phthónos): “Envy,” from Lat in, “against,” and video, “to look,” “to look with ill-will,” etc, toward another, is an evil strongly condemned in both the OT and the NT.
Cain "looked with ill-will” at Able ().
And in the process of time it came to pass that Cain brought an offering of the fruit of the ground to the Lord. Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat. And the Lord respected Abel and his offering, but He did not respect Cain and his offering. And Cain was very angry, and his countenance fell.
Saul had ill-will toward David because the people gave him more attention than Saul ().
The Pharisees and Sadducees wanted Jesus killed because the people were turning from then to Him ().
Envy goes hand-in-hand with conceit and selfish ambition (; ).
