                     Transitional Phrases

Transition phrases aid in movement within the sermon.  They may be questions, phrases or transitional words that link paragraph's, and sentences.

"The reason why we should take great care in passing from one division of our subject to another, and prepare the phrases of transition, is to save a mental shock.  We have taken much pains to secure the attention of our audience.  We are hoping to instruct, to please, and to move or persuade.   The preacher must try to hold their attention without a break as he passes from one division to the next.  A bad link or phrase of transition give a severe jolt to the mind which may quite distract the attention. A good link carries on the attention without jar or distress, as in a well-laid railway line the train passes smoothly over the points from one pair of lines to the next." [1]

Fall 1994                             Summary of Biblical Sermons

Summary of Lessons Learned from Biblical Sermons

The most important lesson I learned from Biblical Sermons is that there is no excuse for lack of preparation.  The proclamation of the Gospel takes time; preaching takes unseen prayer, diligent study, meditation and creativity.  From the interviews of each preacher I see that what takes minutes in the pulpit, anywhere from 30-40 minutes, requires anywhere from 10-20 hours in the study.  There is no substitute for "spending time at the feet of Jesus".  The "helpful hint" I gathered - incorporate the preaching calendar.

The next lesson learned is the importance of the introductions, illustrations and the conclusions.  The introduction must grab the command of the hearer's attention, answer their non-verbal question of "why should I listen", and draw the hearer into the sermon.  Illustration, one of the most time consuming aspects of the sermon, must embellish our "big idea" and main points, creatively re-focus our hearers and hold their attention through the point or usher them to the next point.  Finding the illustration, that paints a picture of truth and causes the hearer's "light bulb" to go off is no easy task.  It reminds me of the story of Cinderella.  In the story the Prince met Cinderella at the Ball.  Upon her mad dash home before the stroke of twelve, she ran out of one of her slippers.  The prince intoxicated with love took the time and effort to find and match up the girl with the slipper....and they "lived happily ever after".  The same thing happens with illustrations in that it takes time and effort to find just the right story or vignette to "drive home" the big idea and/or main points.

The conclusion is to bring our hearers, purposely, to the end of the sermon while having a clear picture of the "big idea" in their heads.  The conclusion brings our hearers full circle.  Having been grabbed by the intro, held by the illustrations and now persuaded into action by the conclusion.  Helpful hints gathered - collect illustrations, memorize the introduction and conclusion of the sermon and work to become a better story-teller by building vocabulary to "paint the picture".

Finally, one sermon can be preached in a variety of ways, using different sermonic patterns and styles, and still communicate God's truth.  This term I preached from Psalm 127, which was also a part of our reading - "Riding the Wind".  I was able to see the big idea stated and restated differently as well as compare notes with another preacher noting his unity, order and progress, his use of illustrations and style.  Helpful hint gathered - read and listen to other preacher's sermons.
