Revelation 3:1–6 NKJV
1 “And to the angel of the church in Sardis write, ‘These things says He who has the seven Spirits of God and the seven stars: “I know your works, that you have a name that you are alive, but you are dead. 2 Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die, for I have not found your works perfect before God. 3 Remember therefore how you have received and heard; hold fast and repent. Therefore if you will not watch, I will come upon you as a thief, and you will not know what hour I will come upon you. 4 You have a few names even in Sardis who have not defiled their garments; and they shall walk with Me in white, for they are worthy. 5 He who overcomes shall be clothed in white garments, and I will not blot out his name from the Book of Life; but I will confess his name before My Father and before His angels. 6 “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.” ’

The seven Spirits may be the Holy Spirit, or perhaps seven angels

Believer’s Bible Commentary E. To Sardis (3:1–6)

It is in the power of the Holy Spirit that He controls the churches and their messengers.

KJV Bible Commentary 1. The Description of Christ. 3:1

3:1. The seven Spirits of God. Paul speaks of the unity of the person of the Spirit (cf. Eph 4:3); John emphasizes the diversity of His attributes and actions as well as the fullness of His power (cf. Isa 11:2). In the different creeds of Christendom, it will be remembered, the Holy Spirit was not given His rightful place.

A Commentary on the Revelation of John (5) The Letter to Sardis (3:1–6)

The seven spirits of God. As in 1:4, this is an allusion to the fullness of the Holy Spirit.

Don’t be alive and still dead.

one can be physically alive and spiritually dead.
Your daily fear of future tragedy erodes your affection for God.
Your experience in corporate worship is empty and distracted.
You feel unimpressed, aloof to the things of God.

wake up

Revelation 3:2 NKJV
2 Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die, for I have not found your works perfect before God.
This admonition was particularly relevant in Sardis, for in the city was an impregnable acropolis which had never been seized by frontal attack; twice, however, in the history of the city, the acropolis had been taken by stealth because of lack of vigilance on the part of its defenders. This admonition suggests that the church was not yet entirely beyond hope. It was not too late to awaken from spiritual lethargy; there still remained a residuum of life which could be revived. But unless such a revival occurs, this small remainder will also fall subject to spiritual death.
Ladd, G. E. (1972). A Commentary on the Revelation of John (p. 56). Grand Rapids, MI: William B. Eerdmans Publishing Company.
“there works were not Perfect” for two reasons:
Heresy (bad teaching or application)
it was also distressed by Jewish opposition
what that means is there will always be trouble we cant use that as an excuse to grow cold.

strengthen the things that remain

in every Christians life there is an eb and flow to things.
in every thing you do you can get to where you are phoning it in.
there are things that you cant quit.
in order to make it right it must be revived.
this is how it is with your spiritual life.

I have not found your works perfect

this is not so much about imperfect works, but the opportunity to get it right.
(NKJV)
3 Remember therefore how you have received and heard; hold fast and repent. Therefore if you will not watch, I will come upon you as a thief, and you will not know what hour I will come upon you.

repent

you never know when your time is up
Revelation 3:5–6 NKJV
5 He who overcomes shall be clothed in white garments, and I will not blot out his name from the Book of Life; but I will confess his name before My Father and before His angels. 6 “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.” ’

its about eternity
