I want to mention 3 things that we do at Communion...
1.
We remember Christ’s sacrifice
Two components:
His body
His blood
A. His body given for us...
i.
A demonstration of His love...
It has been said that it was love that kept Jesus on the cross, and that is certainly true!
ii.
Freedom from the law
The “law” here is the law of Moses in the Old Testament.
613 commandments which can be subdivided in three sections:
Ritual laws i.e. laws pertaining to sacrifices, Sabbaths, festivals, diet and clothing
Judicial laws i.e. statutes pertaining to the governing of the nation e.g.
how crime is to be punished, property laws etc.
Eternal laws i.e. the unchanging moral standards of God.
E.g. not lying, not stealing, not committing adultery, loving your neighbour as yourself, loving God with all your heart soul mind and strength.
The body of Jesus on the cross set us free from the ritual and judicial laws.
But what about God’s eternal laws?
They have become part of the new covenant, and we walk in them by living in the power of the the Holy Spirit...
Also, through Jesus’ body given for us, we are...
iii.
Healed from the a lifestyle of sin
B. His blood shed for us...
i. Forgiveness
ii.
Faithfulness
Note: “covenant” - solemn binding agreement.
God will be faithful
So, at communion, we remember Christ’s sacrifice.
But also...
2. We remember that we are Christ’s body
We will all be partaking of one loaf.
That’s is important.
It represents the fact that we are one body.
This reminds us of the following...
A. You have a function
Every part of your body has a purpose / function.
The church the body of Christ, and you are part of that body.
Therefore, you have a function!
B. We should all care for one another
C. Relationships matter
So, at communion, we remember Christ’s sacrifice and we remember that we are one body.
But also...
3. We look forward to Christ’s coming
Before you partake, it is important to examine yourself...
