Don't Get What You Want and Loose What you Need

And Jacob sod pottage: and Esau came from the field, and he was faint: And Esau said to Jacob, Feed me, I pray thee, with that same red pottage; for I am faint: therefore was his name called Edom. And Jacob said, Sell me this day thy birthright. And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit shall this birthright do to me? And Jacob said, Swear to me this day; and he sware unto him: and he sold his birthright unto Jacob. Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentiles; and he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way: thus Esau despised his birthright. (Genesis 25:29-34 KJV)

Don't sell your birthright--- or

DON'T GET WHAT YOU WANT AND LOSE WHAT YOU NEED.

Introduction: Don’t allow the devil to get you to a point that you give up what you have in God. Don’t sell out. The scripture tells us to buy the truth and sell it not.

Don’t accept the junk that Satan is offering you just for a moment of pleasure. You’re entitled to blessings and miracles. Do not accept the curses. All the blessings are yours, it’s your birthright. A birthright is a right, privilege, or possession to which a person is entitled to by birth. You have rights in the kingdom because you have been chosen by God. You have privileges. Don't sell out.

We, who have been washed in his blood and filled with his spirit, have blessings and privileges because we belong to the king. We are children of God and we have rights. We are son and daughters of the most high God. So don’t give up what you have in Christ. Tell somebody don’t sell your birthright.

BACKGROUND: Rebehak has been told by God that two nations are in her womb.

God says to her that the older will serve the younger, in other words God says I’m changing the order. The birthright always went to the first born son, but God has something else in mind.

These twin boys are born, the first is named Esau, and the second was named Jacob. Jacob’s name means, took by the heal, it has the sense of coming from behind, catching, spoiling, determined to get what isn’t his. Esau was a man of the field, a hunter, an outdoors man. Jacob was one who stayed around the house. He looked after the sheep and livestock that Isaac owned. Note; Esau should have been the one at home helping his father, and seeing to the family business, but he showed no concern about it. All that Isaac had would be his someday.

Context, vs. 28 the parents had their favorites. Isaac loved Esau and Rebekah lover Jacob. This Favoritism caused strife between the boys.

Parents must be careful not to fall into this trap; it will cause your children to have strife between them.

Vs 29 returning from the field Esau is hungry, and Jacob has some stew. Esau wants something to eat. Vs 30 Jacob sees his opportunity to take advantage of Esau’s condition. Jacob knew the importance of having the birthright. He comes from behind. He catches Esau at his most vulnerable state, to spoil, and he determines to get what he wants by using Esau’s weakness. That sounds like what the devil always does. He comes out of nowhere and catches us a our most vulnerable and weak state.

You must be on guard; the devil will catch you at your weakest moment and take advantage of you. He will offer you something that looks good, but it’s only a temporary fix. He’s always cooking up something to grab your attention. He knows what you like, and he knows how to appeal to your desires. HE’S TRYING TO STEAL YOUR BIRTHRIGHT. HE’S TRYING TO GET YOU TO CANCEL OUT WHAT GOD HAS IN STORE TFOR YOU UP AHEAD.

Vs. 31 Jacob says to Esau sell me your birth right. I’ll feed you if you give up your rights. Note: the birthright belonged to the first born son. It consisted of #1 leadership in worship and headship in the family.

The elder son was to be the priest, the spiritual and physical head of the family. #2 a double portion of the inheritance belonged to the first born. #3 the title to the covenant blessings that God had promised to Abraham. Everything God promised to Abraham went with the birthright.( I will bless thee, multiply there, and make thy name great. I will increase thy seed. I will be with thee. I will bless those that bless you and curse those that curse you. ESAU TRADED HIS FUTURE FOR A BOWL OF STEW. HE LOST SIGHT OF WHAT HE HAD. YOU'D BETTER HOLD ON TO WHAT GOD HAS PROMISED YOU, DON'T GIVE IT UP.

Esau sold his birthright reveals how little value he placed on God's blessings and covenant promises. He settled for the immediate and didn't take into account the long term consequences of his actions. He wanted pleasure for the moment. He got what he wanted but lost what he needed.

Don’t sell out for a moment of pleasure. Don’t engage in a moment of sin, and miss the future blessing.

Esau did not think about the choice he made. Our choices have consequences. You may be closing a door because of your present choice for something to make you feel good now. You may be giving up what God has for you by giving into something that you feel is just right for now. You may get what you want, but you will loose what you need.

Vs. 33-34 Esau sold his birthright. He despised his birthright. He hated the role that he was to be in. He did not want his blessing. Esau did not have vision. He failed to see the big picture.

He lived so completely in the present, depending solely on his own strength and resources that he repeatedly failed to clearly see the future. Don' t allow yourself to be entangled with something that's only a temporary solution., because you may miss what you really need.

The same things Esau fell for can entice us today. Note these 3 things he did. #1 He focused solely on the here and now; convinced that tomorrow never comes.

We better consult God before we mess up beyond repair.

Esau saw only food and he did whatever necessary to get what he wanted. Sometimes we will avoid the right thing and do the wrong just to get our way for the present. #2 He relied on his natural abilities, and on his birth order rather than on God’s plan. Trusting in self will get you in trouble. We must not rely on our own gifts and abilities, but on God’s ability and power.

#3 His short sightless, promoted him to give up the ultimate to get the immediate. He acted on impulse. The pressure of hunger caused him to lose sight on the blessing. Don’t let the suffering now cause you to lose sight of the future blessings.

Esau lacked faith, the one important thing that was needed to possess the promise. He had no regard or concern for spiritual things.

He cared for earthly things. Jacob also held earthly things dear, but Esau didn’t believe God’s promises.

If he had he would not have thrown them away so lightly. Jacob believed them And He went about it the wrong way, yet he took God at his word; and God honored his faith, though he had to disciplined him, God gave him the blessing.

Don’t sell your birthright. God has brought you out, and brought you in to the church to bless you. He has given you a new life. He has set you in heavenly places in him. He has sealed you with his spirit. He has opened doors for you and all you have to do is obey his word.

Don’t throw you anointing away for a season. Don’t cancel out what God has in store for you down the road.

I don’t know about you but I want my blessings. I want everything God has for me. I won’t sell out for a piece of bread and a bowl of a stew.

I won’t give it away just because I’m under pressure, and going through trials.

I may be in this storm, but I can’t cancel out my blessing. I know I’m destine to be blessed I’m entitled to all God has for me.

The devil knows that you got a blessing coming, that’s why he’s tempting you to give up. He’s trying to derail and side track what’s yours. He wants you to give in to what you see for the moment. He is telling you give up and give in, but hold on to what you have in God. The bible says Esau sought repentance, but he couldn’t find it. He came to his senses too late. He realized later what he had done and it was too late, it couldn’t be reversed.

Don’t give up what you will need later. Don’t give up eternal life and blessings now for things and pleasures that will fade away. Tell somebody don’t sell your birthright. Don’t give up what you need now.

Esau got what he wanted, but he lost what he really needed. God has been too good to you and you can’t give up what you have in him now.

I BELONG TO THE Lord; and I will not give up my rights as a son. The blessings are yours and no one can take them from you. It’s our rights as sons and daughters of Jesus Christ.

Don't sell your birthright. You may get what you want, but you'll loose what you need. You need the anointing. You need the grace and power of God in your life. You need the connection with jesus.
