Who’s in Charge?

A. We live in a troubled world. Wars and wars increase. Crime and violence haunt our cities. It seems that world conditions incubate worry.
B. Does anyone have any answers? Is there hope of better days ahead? What will become of us? Does anyone have good news?
C. Who’s in charge? Let’s look at
Psalm 97:1–6 NKJV
1 The Lord reigns; Let the earth rejoice; Let the multitude of isles be glad! 2 Clouds and darkness surround Him; Righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne. 3 A fire goes before Him, And burns up His enemies round about. 4 His lightnings light the world; The earth sees and trembles. 5 The mountains melt like wax at the presence of the Lord, At the presence of the Lord of the whole earth. 6 The heavens declare His righteousness, And all the peoples see His glory.

The Lord Reigns…Relax (v.1)

Psalm 97:1 NKJV
1 The Lord reigns; Let the earth rejoice; Let the multitude of isles be glad!

1. Nothing takes God by surprise.
a. Cast your cares on Him for He cares for you ()
b. Come to Him with your burdens and He’ll carry them ()
2. “Absolute power is safe in the hands of Him who cannot make a mistake or act unrighteously. When the books of God are opened, no eye will see one word that should be blotted out, one syllable of error, one line of injustice, one letter of unholiness.” (C. H. Spurgeon)

The Lord Reigns…Rejoice (v. 1)

Psalm 97:1 NKJV
1 The Lord reigns; Let the earth rejoice; Let the multitude of isles be glad!
1. World conditions were known to God from the beginning.
a. Jesus revealed the signs preceding His return ()
b. Paul told Timothy perilous times would come. ()
2. How are we to react when these times arrive? ()
Luke 21:25–28 NKJV
25 “And there will be signs in the sun, in the moon, and in the stars; and on the earth distress of nations, with perplexity, the sea and the waves roaring; 26 men’s hearts failing them from fear and the expectation of those things which are coming on the earth, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 27 Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. 28 Now when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near.”
a. We are to see God’s prophetic plan unfolding and rejoice.
b. We are to look up, being encouraged that God reigns.
3. When we remember who’s in control, we can rejoice. ()
Romans 8:28 NKJV
28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.

The Lord Reigns…Remember (v. 1)

1. We are not the first to live in difficult times.
a. Israel was in slavery in Egypt for four hundred years.
b. David was pursued by Saul, who sought to kill him.
c. The early church endured terrible persecution, including martyrdom.
2. When you’re feeling down or afraid, consider Jesus.
a. He was despised and rejected of men. ()
b. He endured the cross with its pain and shame. ()
c. The resurrection vindicated His message, guaranteeing our salvation. ()
Romans 1:4 NKJV
4 and declared to be the Son of God with power according to the Spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead.
3. God’s plan for your life is unchanged by what’s happening in the world.
Conclusion:
A. Creation gives witness that God is in charge. (vv. 2-6)

2 Clouds and darkness surround Him; Righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne. 3 A fire goes before Him, And burns up His enemies round about. 4 His lightnings light the world; The earth sees and trembles. 5 The mountains melt like wax at the presence of the Lord, At the presence of the Lord of the whole earth. 6 The heavens declare His righteousness, And all the peoples see His glory.
B. Commit all to the Lord of all and stop worrying.
