In order to set a goal you need to have the right goal in mind. Man went to the doctor and was told to lose weight, exercise every day. Came back and had gained weight … “Exercise … I thought you said extra fries!”
David had just finished bringing the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem. It had been over 80 years since it the Ark had been in the Tabernacle. David brought the Ark up (after a failed first attempt) with great celebration.

Embrace God’s Purposes (vv. 1-10)

Verse 15 the vision - “word of revelation, divine oracle.”
David had an idea to build God a house, but God in essence said that his purpose was far greater than a mere building.
Isaiah 66:1–2 ESV
Thus says the Lord: “Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool; what is the house that you would build for me, and what is the place of my rest? All these things my hand has made, and so all these things came to be, declares the Lord. But this is the one to whom I will look: he who is humble and contrite in spirit and trembles at my word.
God is far more concerned about the heart of the worshipper than the place of worship.
God’s Purposes are greater than our plans.
1 chron 17:
1 Chronicles 17:9–10 ESV
And I will appoint a place for my people Israel and will plant them, that they may dwell in their own place and be disturbed no more. And violent men shall waste them no more, as formerly, from the time that I appointed judges over my people Israel. And I will subdue all your enemies. Moreover, I declare to you that the Lord will build you a house.
A visionary heart embraces God’s purposes.
God’s purpose is to magnify himself through Jesus Christ by giving him an eternal kingdom.
How can you serve the Lord and advance his kingdom?
God’s purpose is to call a people to himself through Christ.
God’s purpose is far beyond what we can even ask or think.
Ephesians 3:16–20 ESV
that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us,
Ephesians 3:20–21 ESV
Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.
Eph. 3:
Eph. 3:
God’s purpose is far beyond what we can even ask or think. Christ will build his church.

Believe God’s Promises (vv. 11-15)

God’s promises endure forever.
1 Chronicles 17:12–14 ESV
He shall build a house for me, and I will establish his throne forever. I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son. I will not take my steadfast love from him, as I took it from him who was before you, but I will confirm him in my house and in my kingdom forever, and his throne shall be established forever.’ ”
1 Chron. 12:
The promises is enduring because it is fulfilled in Jesus Christ. He will sit upon the throne of David! He will rule with justice and mercy!
A visionary heart is filled with trust in the promise of God and therefore acts upon that promise.
A visionary heart acts upon God’s promise.
David believed God’s promise and acted upon it. He prepared for the Temple to be built.
He prepared with resources -
He prepared Solomon by passing on God’s vision -
He prepared others to help in the task -

Proclaim God’s Praises (vv. 16-27)

A visionary heart expresses its expectation in the Lord by proclaiming his goodness.
This was the whole point a place to meet God anyway, to bring him praise!
Praise his grace - v. 16-17
Praise his preeminence - v. 20-22
Praise his name - v. 24
