Previous message: Jesus had healed a man born blind by spitting on the ground, making clay, anointing the man’s eyes with the clay, and sending him to wash in the pool of Siloam.
John 9:8–25 NKJV
8 Therefore the neighbors and those who previously had seen that he was blind said, “Is not this he who sat and begged?” 9 Some said, “This is he.” Others said, “He is like him.” He said, “I am he.” 10 Therefore they said to him, “How were your eyes opened?” 11 He answered and said, “A Man called Jesus made clay and anointed my eyes and said to me, ‘Go to the pool of Siloam and wash.’ So I went and washed, and I received sight.” 12 Then they said to him, “Where is He?” He said, “I do not know.” 13 They brought him who formerly was blind to the Pharisees. 14 Now it was a Sabbath when Jesus made the clay and opened his eyes. 15 Then the Pharisees also asked him again how he had received his sight. He said to them, “He put clay on my eyes, and I washed, and I see.” 16 Therefore some of the Pharisees said, “This Man is not from God, because He does not keep the Sabbath.” Others said, “How can a man who is a sinner do such signs?” And there was a division among them. 17 They said to the blind man again, “What do you say about Him because He opened your eyes?” He said, “He is a prophet.” 18 But the Jews did not believe concerning him, that he had been blind and received his sight, until they called the parents of him who had received his sight. 19 And they asked them, saying, “Is this your son, who you say was born blind? How then does he now see?” 20 His parents answered them and said, “We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind; 21 but by what means he now sees we do not know, or who opened his eyes we do not know. He is of age; ask him. He will speak for himself.” 22 His parents said these things because they feared the Jews, for the Jews had agreed already that if anyone confessed that He was Christ, he would be put out of the synagogue. 23 Therefore his parents said, “He is of age; ask him.” 24 So they again called the man who was blind, and said to him, “Give God the glory! We know that this Man is a sinner.” 25 He answered and said, “Whether He is a sinner or not I do not know. One thing I know: that though I was blind, now I see.”
Key verse (v25 above) - “I was blind, now I see”
That’s something we can all say.
2 Corinthians 4:4 NKJV
4 whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them.
We were all blind. We couldn’t see how glorious Jesus truly is. But God commanded light to shine in our hearts, and now we can see!
Today I want to talk about the fourfold glory of Christ.
In your Bible, you will notice that there are four gospels - Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Each of these gospels emphasises a different aspect of Christ’s glory...

Matthew - God’s Ideal King

Matthew’s Gospel begins by showing Jesus’ royal descent...
Matthew 1:1 NKJV
1 The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham:
Note, “Son of David”.
Matthew 2:2 NKJV
2 saying, “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him.”
Matthew mentions the kingdom more than Mark, Luke or John.
It is not the fact that He is a king that makes Him glorious. It is the kind of king He is. So what kind of king is He?
Isaiah 9:6–7 NKJV
6 For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7 Of the increase of His government and peace There will be no end, Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, To order it and establish it with judgment and justice From that time forward, even forever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.
This describes the expanding and righteous reigns of Jesus.
Notice v6:
Isaiah 9:6 NKJV
6 For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
His name (i.e. who He is), is called...

Wonderful

Hebrew = pele (like the football player)
It means:
Extraordinary
Hard to be understood
Admirable
Distinguished
Jesus did many wonderful things when He was on earth...
Acts 2:22 NKJV
22 “Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a Man attested by God to you by miracles, wonders, and signs which God did through Him in your midst, as you yourselves also know—
Imagine what it will be like when He comes again and rules the world?
Hebrews 13:8 NKJV
8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

Counsellor

Colossians 3:16 NKJV
16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
Matthew 12:42 NKJV
42 The queen of the South will rise up in the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and indeed a greater than Solomon is here.

Mighty God

Mighty = gibbor (Hebrew). Same word used in Psalm 24:8...
Psalm 24:8 NKJV
8 Who is this King of glory? The Lord strong and mighty, The Lord mighty in battle.
This same Jesus is able to fight for you to. He is our “Mighty God”.

Everlasting Father

Jesus doesn’t rule His kingdom as a tyrant. He leads His people with the heart of a father...
Notice how King David is described...
Mark 11:10 NKJV
10 Blessed is the kingdom of our father David That comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!”
Note: “father”.
However, King David only reigned for 40 years. Jesus however will reign forever hence He is our, “Everlasting Father”.
Not to be confused with the first person of the Trinity. Jesus Himself has a Father...
Ephesians 1:3 NKJV
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ,
John 20:17 NKJV
17 Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to Me, for I have not yet ascended to My Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, ‘I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God.’ ”
The one true God externally exists as God the Father, His Son Jesus Christ and Holy Spirit. However, the Son Himself has a role as a father-figure to His people, and this is what the title “Everlasting Father” refers to in Isaiah 9:6.

Prince of Peace

One day there will be universal peace on earth. But it won’t be achieved through the UN. It will be achieved through Jesus Christ when He returns.
Isaiah 2:4 NKJV
4 He shall judge between the nations, And rebuke many people; They shall beat their swords into plowshares, And their spears into pruning hooks; Nation shall not lift up sword against nation, Neither shall they learn war anymore.
As amazing a King as Jesus is, we must also remember that He is a Servant King.

Mark - God’s Ideal Servant

The Gospel of Mark contains less of Jesus’ teachings than the other Gospels. Mark is a Gospel of action, it is about what Jesus did. It shows Jesus as God’s servant, someone who went about doing God’s work.
Mark 10:45 NKJV
45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”
Jesus is an example that we must follow...
Philippians 2:3–8 NKJV
3 Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. 4 Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others. 5 Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, 7 but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.

Luke - God’s Ideal Man

Luke emphasises Jesus as God’s ideal Man. Luke mentions Jesus’ prayer life more than all the other Gospels, highlighting Jesus’ human dependence on God.
Jesus is the eternal Son of God, but He became a human being in order to redeem us. Not only that, but He still is a human being...
1 Timothy 2:5 NKJV
5 For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus,
This shows us how much God loves human beings.
He has exalted a human being to the highest place and has seated Him at His own right hand, far above all angels and every spiritual being!
And what does Jesus do for us there? He represents us to the Father...
Romans 8:34 NKJV
34 Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us.
Because Jesus became a Man, He knows how we feel!
Hebrews 4:15 NKJV
15 For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.
Hebrews 2:18 NKJV
18 For in that He Himself has suffered, being tempted, He is able to aid those who are tempted.

John - the Lord from heaven

Mark’s Gospel has no genealogy of Jesus. In Matthew’s Gospel, the genealogy goes back to Abraham. In Luke’s Gospel, it goes back to Adam. But John goes back even further...
John 1:1 NKJV
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
Whilst Jesus is a Man, let us never become over familiar with Him. Thought He is Man, He has never stopped also being God!
John 20:28 NKJV
28 And Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!”
Colossians 2:9 NKJV
9 For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily;
Our appropriate responses therefore is to worship Him and to acknowledge Him as Lord in every area of our lives...
Philippians 2:9–11 NKJV
9 Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, 11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Psalm 95:6–7 NKJV
6 Oh come, let us worship and bow down; Let us kneel before the Lord our Maker. 7 For He is our God, And we are the people of His pasture, And the sheep of His hand. Today, if you will hear His voice:

Summary

We were all once spiritually blind, but now we can see
Jesus is God's Ideal King, Servant, and Man. He is also the Lord from heaven
