Last week we talked about the principles of seed time and harvest. We had a great Sunday, with a meal following. It was a good day, no a great day.
Today we are going back to the book of Hebrews. Quick reminder of what we have looked at so far in this book.
Introduction to the book and the struggle for the for the Jewish audience of this book to falter between Christ and the Old Testament sacrificial system
Jesus is more/better than the angels
The message delivered by the angles contrasted with the message delivered by Christ
The wilderness rest in comparison to the believers rest in Jesus Christ
And now we come to the end of Chapter 4. We are going to be looking at Jesus as our High Priest.
In order to understand the concept of Jesus as our high priest, it is foundational to understand the Old Testament role of the High Priest.
So let’s do that.
The High Priest had an array of various duties but by far the one that stood out was the day of atonement or Yom Kippur. It is this day that we are going to look at and then see how the writer of the book of Hebrews relates this to our Savior.

The day of atonement happened once a year on the 10th day of the 7th month.

The High Priest would start by removing his normal priestly garments or “the golden garments” and cleansing himself . After washing the High Priest would then put on “the white garments” The clothing is specifically called out by God in the book of and to be worn.

He wold chose a bull to sacrifice for his own sin offerning
2 rams to be a burnt offering for himself/family and for the people
2 male goats to be used for the sacrifice of the people’s sin offering
The bull would then be sacrificed at the entrance of the tabernacle as an offering to atone for the sins of the High Priest, making him acceptable to come into the presence of God.
Lots were then cast to determine which of the goats would be slaughtered and which would be driven away carrying the sins of the people.
Entering the tabernacle the High Priest would bring the blood of the bull that was sacrificed and stop to collect coals from the altar of incense. Taking the blood, coals and incense he would go through the veil and would start another burnt offering of incense to the Lord in front of the Ark of the Covenant.
The purpose was to fill the Holy of Holies with smoke and shield the High Priest from seeing the fullness of God’s glory. The Bible says, “No man can look upon God and live” The presence of God was about to dwell on the mercy seat, the top of the Ark of the Covenant between the angels wings. The High Priest had to be shielded from this. So incense was offered to God and filled the room with smoke.
The High Priest would take some of the blood from the bull he sacrificed earlier and would sprinkle the mercy seat or the top of the Ark of the Covenant.
The High Priest would then leave the leave the Holy of Holies and get the goat selected earlier to be sacrificed. After sacrificing the goat the priest would go back to the Holy of Holies and do the same with the goats blood as he did with the blood of the bull. A sin offering to atone for the sins of the people.
Priest would then atone for the holy place. This was done alone.
Leaving the tabernacle the priest would take blood from the bull and the goat and sprinkle it on the horns of the altar atoning for the altar.
Turning to the goat that was spared, the priest would lay his hand on the goat’s head and symbolically pronounce the sins of the people on the goat. The goat was then driven out off the camp to never be seen again. Symbolically removing the sins of the people from the assembly.

The high priest would enter the tabernacle and remove the white garments, wash and put the clothes he took off, back on. The golden garments.
Returning to the outer courtyard the rams selected earlier were sacrificed as burnt offering to the Lord on the altar. One for the priest and one for the people.
The fat of the sin offerings, the bull and the goat, were burned on the altar and the remains of taken outside of the camp and burned.
Last the ones who handled the remains taken outside of the camp and the scapegoat were to wash their clothes and bodies and then could return to the camp.
All of this was done for two reasons. One is the obvious one. It is so the sins of the people would be atoned for, forgiven. It was done so the people would find some level of peace with their past.
But there is also a second reality that takes place here. The cleansing of the tabernacle and the altar from the people’s sin.
The temple was cleansed so God would continue to meet with them there.
Done every year, over and over. There is a country song out now that says, “sunrise, sunburn, sunset, repeat” Here it would be, “sin, sacrifice, made right, repeat” Over and Over every year this went on.
That is a lot to take in and to grasp. Now hold on to all of this and turn to [read ]
All of what we looked at this morning was a copy of what is to come.
Please stay with me, turn to . Here we pick up the account of the crucifixion of Jesus. [Read ]
Can you imagine being in the temple when this occured?
The moment breathe left His body the veil was torn from top to bottom.
You know the accounts of old how no man can look at God and live?
I like to place myself at events I study about and consider my reaction.
II’m guessing
As I look at this subject today, I imagine being in the temple when the veil is being torn. I know the accounts of old how no man can look at the face of God and live? Hearing the ripping of the material and seeing the veil coming apart. What would I do? Run? Perhaps, but just maybe I would hit the floor face down expecting to be consumed by the shekinah glory of God Himself.
Doont let me lose you
The veil is torn, the ripping stops and I am still alive? What?

“Having offered ONE sacrifice for sins for ALL time”
ONE sacrifice ALL sins. What’s this referring to? The crucifixion of Christ.
When Christ offered Himself as a sacrifice for our sins, it was such a sacrifice that it removed any need for any further sacrifice EVER! Not only that but it covered ALL sins! ALL! Get that ALL sins!
Pause with me..... Deep breathe, let that thought consume you.
What a Savior! Say it with me, “What a Savior!”
We looked at the day of atonement, the people prepared themselves for the occasion. They would turn away from their sins, come to the tabernacle, offer a sin offering and a burnt offering for their sins. They would leave being made right with God.

Would you allow me to ask if you have been to the day of atonement?
Think this through with me? Has there been that moment when you realized that you and God were not OK. That you have sinned. You messed it up. In preparing did you resolve to turn from the things that separated you and God? And then by faith did you trust that the sacrifice of Christ would be your sacrifice ONCE for ALL sins?
If this rings true and your like ding, ding. You have just described it. It happened. I have been there! Praise God, what a Savior! Your heart leaps at the news of ONE sacrifice and ALL sins forgiven!
On the other hand, if hearing this your like, yea not so much. This is kind of foreign to me. Then listen up. With everything that is in me can I invite you to the day of atonement? When? TODAY. The writer of Hebrews has referenced this 5 times already. There is a point. TODAY you can have your day of atonement and leave here knowing ONE sacrifice is enough for ALL time, for ALL sins. Will you?
the day as the writer of Hebrews as said
Today, after the cross, we are invited to do the same. Turn from our sins, come to the heavenly tabernacle and offer a sin offering. Not one of bulls, goats and rams but we offer Christ Himself. How, by faith.
What was this sacrifice?

(4:14–5:10)
In the days of the tabernacle and temple, the Jews had a high priest. The high priest was a human being like themselves, and knew the temptations of everyday life. In this way he was able to be sympathetic to his people.
Once a year, on the Day of Atonement, the high priest offered a sacrifice for his own sins. He was then allowed through the tabernacle curtain into the Most Holy Place, to offer sacrifices on behalf of everyone else.
Now Christians have a high priest, Jesus Christ, who has passed through the heavens. He had no sins of his own for which to make sacrifice. Instead, he offered himself as the perfect sacrifice for the sins of the whole world.
