When you go to family gatherings, do you talk about the great things God has done? Many of us belong to families who do not know our God, who don’t have a personal relationship with him. Some are embarrassed when we say grace in public restaurants. Some have even told us that we talk about God to much, and don’t bring that up. We don’t all work in a place where we can freely talk about God.

Where Dave works employees are forbidden to bring bibles in with them – Only authorized ministers can do that. We live in a society that embraces the Easter bunny and prohibits public displays of the Ten Commandments. We’ve been sensitized into restraining ourselves when it comes to talking about the goodness of God.

Well, this morning that’s not going to happen. This morning we are going to talk about what God has done in our lives.

But before we do that I want to share a song with you. No I am not going to sing! This song has been stuck in my head all week, and when things got uncomfortable and bad and worse these words ministered to me.

Song

Psalms 118–136 are called “The Great Hallel” (where we get Hallelujah from). It is recited on the first evening at the Passover supper and on occasions of great joy.

This morning we will be concentrating on Psalm 136.

Dave & I will read it thru and then we will look at the individual verses.

Read

What do you notice about this Psalm?

What does it mean when the write does that?

The first 3 verses are a call to praise.

1 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good.

His love endures forever.

God is good. HE loves us and cares for us in many ways.

2 Give thanks to the God of gods.

His love endures forever.

3 Give thanks to the Lord of lords:

His love endures forever.

The next 18 verses give us reasons to praise God.

4-9: God’s Creation

4 to him who alone does great wonders,

His love endures forever.

5 who by his understanding made the heavens,

His love endures forever.

            6 who spread out the earth upon the waters,

His love endures forever.

            7 who made the great lights—

His love endures forever.

            8 the sun to govern the day,

His love endures forever.

            9 the moon and stars to govern the night;

His love endures forever.

10-15: God’s Deliverance

10 to him who struck down the firstborn of Egypt

His love endures forever.

               11 and brought Israel out from among them

His love endures forever.

            12 with a mighty hand and outstretched arm;

His love endures forever.

            13 to him who divided the Red Sea asunder

His love endures forever.

            14 and brought Israel through the midst of it,

His love endures forever.

            15 but swept Pharaoh and his army into the Red Sea;

His love endures forever.

16–22: God’s Care and our inheritance

            16 to him who led his people through the desert,

His love endures forever.

            17 who struck down great kings,

His love endures forever.

            18 and killed mighty kings—

His love endures forever.

            19 Sihon king of the Amorites

His love endures forever.

            20 and Og king of Bashan—

His love endures forever.

These were the 2 most important battles Moses & the Israelites faced in getting to the promised land. In defeating Og & Sihon they gained more than 4500 square miles of territory. About the size of Lebanon or a little bit bigger than Connecticut.

21 and gave their land as an inheritance,

His love endures forever.

            22 an inheritance to his servant Israel;

His love endures forever.

Verses 23-26 Again call for us to give thanks to God –

23 to the One who remembered us in our low estate

His love endures forever.

24 and freed us from our enemies,

His love endures forever.

            25 and who gives food to every creature.

His love endures forever.

            26 Give thanks to the God of heaven.

His love endures forever.

Interesting this is only place in the entire book of Psalms that God is referred to as the God of Heaven.
